Our next FoWT monthly meeting will take place on Monday 11th May 2026 – 7.00 pm (19.00 hrs) via Zoom.
“The Mersey – Culture and History of this Iconic River” by Brian Anderson.
Our guest speaker on the night will be Brian Anderson, who will tell us about “The Mersey – Culture and History of this Iconic River”.
About the talk
From the C18th to the C20th the River Mersey was the UK’s ‘Gateway to the West’ – the point of departure for explorers and tens of millions of people venturing into the ‘new world’ and the access point for goods and supplies from across the British Empire and beyond. The river has brought wealth and recession, stimulated art & culture, attracted migrants and made the region a unique World City.
This illustrated talk looks at the Mersey’s mercantile past, its strong global identity; the river’s influence on Liverpool as a trend setter, a brash, self confident, outward looking and international city.
About the Speaker
Brian Anderson, local architect, photographer and educator, has captured images of landscapes, wildlife and people from trips to over 67 nations and territories around the world. He has travelled North to South, from the Geographic North Pole to Antarctica, and East to West from Japan to Easter Island (Rapa Nui) and Galápagos.
In this talk, Brian combines the culture and identity of Liverpool’s iconic river with his stunning images, personal thoughts and entertaining recollections of the river and city where he moved to live nearly 50 years ago.
