					Extended tour I had a fantastic time at the tunnel, I felt very welcome, and was given a lot of interesting information. I would definitely recommend taking a trip here and becoming a member to ensure these tunnels stay open for all to see.

						Williamson Tunnels  - Why? Quirky attraction to see the Willamson Tunnels probably dug by soldiers with no other work returning from the Napoleonic Wars after 1812.

					Family visit We visited Williamson’s Tunnels as a family of four (two adults and two teenagers) and had a fantastic experience. The tunnels themselves are absolutely amazing and full of history, but what really made the visit special was our volunteer guide, Claire. She somehow managed to hold our teenagers’ attention for a full two hours — no small achievement! Her knowledge and enthusiasm brought the tunnels to life.



We enjoyed the visit so much that we’ll definitely be joining as members, and we’re already looking forward to booking one of the longer three-hour tours. We honestly couldn’t wait to come back.

						Loved the tour We had a really enjoyable afternoon visiting the tunnels - couldn’t fault it. Our guide was excellent and gave a thorough recount of the history. The volunteers are really passionate about preserving the tunnels and so they should be. Definitely will visit again with others.

Clare was our brilliant, informative guide who blended the serious with the hilarious. Incredible to think what lies beneath the streets of Liverpool that most people never see. 					A Grand Day Out Well, what can I say?



We came back to visit Williamson’s Tunnels in Liverpool after our last trip over 15 years ago, when we were lowered down into the tunnels in a harness on a block and tackle from above, feeling a bit like “a puppet on a string”  



This time we booked a tour and returned with some friends. As it turned out, it was just us, our friends, and Mandy, our tour guide. What a bonus that was! Mandy was absolutely brilliant—friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and great fun throughout. She really helped make the whole experience special.



We also met the rest of the team above ground and had a laugh about how much things had changed since our last visit. The work that has been done is fantastic.



Every corner seems to reveal another treasure, and the whole place is fascinating. There is so much to see and learn that the time just flew by. In fact, at one point we even ended up singing “When I’m Calling You” in one of the lower caverns to experience the acoustics!



Britain’s Got Talent, here we come  although it would definitely have to be filmed in Williamson’s Tunnels for the full effect! 



All joking aside, this was one of the best days out we’ve had in ages. A huge thank you to Mandy and everyone involved in preserving and sharing this remarkable piece of Liverpool’s history. We had an absolute ball and can’t wait to come back again.

					Definitely worth a visit! We had a thoroughly enjoyable tour of the tunnels with our guide Tom. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the history and layout of the tunnels, having been one of the people who worked hard excavating on the site.  The volunteers make you feel very welcome and I would highly recommend this tour. In fact this is my second visit!

The tour guides are friendly and knowledgable about the sites, many of them being the very people who did the recovery excavations. The tour involved ladders, stairs and some uneven floors but nothing to steep or difficult. For an incredibly modest fee you get an insight into a mysterious corner of Liverpool and the fascinating if eccentric Joseph Williamson. In the future I hope the City Council will support the “Friends” and ensure another piece of the city’s isn’t lost to development.

Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. Massive thanks to to Mike and the team.

We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history, caves, community, or simply something wonderfully quirky. We were only visiting for a weekend and the tours were initially sold out; however, Mike was incredibly helpful. 						Lovely, Funny, Informative I came in from Philadelphia for a couple days and I had a lovely tour with Mike! The tunnels are such a mysterious event beneath Liverpool and Mike is a great tour guide in explaining so much history to them. So thankful for answering all my questions, too! For anyone considering it, absolutely book it!
					
					Brilliant Experience What a fantastic thing to experience! I've lived near Liverpool for nearly 30 years, and never knew there was something like this lying below the city. Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.



The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool. 



Tours are free, but you can leave a donation at the end. 



It's best to book as far in advance as is possible, especially during summer peak season.

						Brilliant Experience What a fantastic thing to experience! I've lived near Liverpool for nearly 30 years, and never knew there was something like this lying below the city. Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. 					A unique experience It was a place we had always wanted to visit and we weren’t disappointed. Clare our guide was amazing  her knowledge was extensive and her enthusiasm knew no bounds.

We learnt all about the philanthropist Joseph Williamson what a tremendous man, we went down to a labyrinth of tunnels, at different levels. The volunteers do a fantastic job keeping the tunnels open  amazingly not supported by Liverpool Council or the Heritage trust.

This is a project that must be supported by all to keep a unique asset for future generations ..thank you so much for our great day.

					What an amazing place! A group of 24 of us went today. We were made very welcome. Our guides were enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. The whole place was fascinating. The second we walked onto the site we greeted by some of the lovely team, a a happy chatty lot! The tour itself was brilliant though not my first time coming (it was my children) the site always amazes me when I'm down there it's such a wonderful historical hidden gem, the children loved it, living in Liverpool ourselves and now they have realised what's under us! I really recommend this for absolutely anyone that can get around! Every question was answered in depth , photos are welcome and to top it off the kids even go a cute certificate at the end! Our friends said they thought it was one of the most exciting things they had done for years!! There were 7 of us in the tour group, our tour guide was a lady called Mandy who was very helpful and knowledgeable, took her time to fully explain things, and to point different things out to the group on our walk around.

						An engineering marvel I’m not sure any written review will ever do justice to the experience of actually setting foot in the Williamson tunnels. The underground spaces themselves have been painstakingly emptied of the spoil that had filled them, and have been restored to their as built condition.  The collection of items that have been removed from the tunnels when they were used as a dumping ground provides some interesting snapshots of Britain over the decades. 					Walk in the footsteps of the Mole of Edge Hill Who would have thought we would discover such a labyrinth of tunnels under the streets of Liverpool courtesy of the Friends of Williamsons Tunnels?  What the volunteers have done to discover and uncover this magical place is remarkable.  Our small group was guided through the tunnels by our friendly and knowledgeable guide Mike who coincidentally was who I had email contact with to arrange our tour.  The response to my enquiry was speedy and we were all set to go.  We continued on to an extended tour and we spent several interesting hours in total exploring the work of Mr Williamson. 						Walk in the footsteps of the Mole of Edge Hill Who would have thought we would discover such a labyrinth of tunnels under the streets of Liverpool courtesy of the Friends of Williamsons Tunnels?  What the volunteers have done to discover and uncover this magical place is remarkable.  Our small group was guided through the tunnels by our friendly and knowledgeable guide Mike who coincidentally was who I had email contact with to arrange our tour.  The response to my enquiry was speedy and we were all set to go.  We continued on to an extended tour and we spent several interesting hours in total exploring the work of Mr Williamson.  I would highly recommend visiting the tunnels for a unique experience you won’t forget.

						Highly recommended!! Wow what an amazing experience  we had at FOIWT.. My son and I visited and are already planning  to visit again soon.

Our tour was wonderful, Clare our guide was very warm and informative the whole  time, making this a perfect trip for us !!

					A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. 						History below Liverpool When visiting places always like to do something different. As such booked Williamsons Tunnels in advance and was not disappointed. 					A hidden gem A most enjoyable couple of hours at Friends of Williamsons Tunnels  on Madon Street. The tour was led my Tom an informative guide and active member.

Fascinating labyrinth of underground chambers and an insight to Williamsons selfless endeavours into keeping men employed.

Such hard work and dedication in revealing this history should be preserved for all to see.  I would recommend a visit and hope that they find a Patron to fight the cause so this gem is never lost.

						A hidden gem A most enjoyable couple of hours at Friends of Williamsons Tunnels  on Madon Street. The tour was led my Tom an informative guide and active member.

Fascinating labyrinth of underground chambers and an insight to Williamsons selfless endeavours into keeping men employed.

Such hard work and dedication in revealing this history should be preserved for all to see.  I would recommend a visit and hope that they find a Patron to fight the cause so this gem is never lost.

						Great experience 👍 We had a great time visiting the tunnels, we are all originally from Liverpool but did not know the full history of the tunnels, so interesting. The guide Colin was so knowledgeable and they all volunteer which is amazing. Great tour highly recommend.

						the tour guide is a great comedian It is one of those small lesser known attractions you can visit in a city. You also have to call to make a reservation, can you imagine. Do not expect very spectacular things, but it is small, friendly, something you can bring up sympathy for and the tour guide was great comedian. It was worth missing a train for.

I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. Lovely welcoming volunteers who all work extremely hard and are all passionate about preserving the amazing understanding tunnels.

					FOWT As part of our 50th anniversary weekend we decided to visit FOWT. From the first inquiry Mike arranged to fit us into a very busy schedule. 						A fascinating view into old Liverpool Our tour of the tunnels was expertly guided by Chris. It was very interesting to hear the tales about how the rubble was removed from the tunnels and look at the many artefacts that had been unearthed. Chris did well picking out interesting articles such as the Edward 7th commemorative china cup. Overall 2 hours well spent.

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

I wish they were given the permissions and also funding needed for them to carry on the amazing work they are doing.

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

It is work in progress, a visit to a spectacular archaeological dig, in a quiet back street near the city centre, manned by enthusiasts, and where you may get mud on your clothes. There were lots of stairs. I was kitted out with hard hat and high viz.

Our guide was Tom, who was one of the excavators of the space we visited, and his passion was absolutely contagious. The tour overran, we were so busy talking, but the time flew by. We will be back to visit some of the members spaces!
					
					Fantastic FREE Experience packed with facts from a knowledgeable volunteer A fabulous 1.5 hour experience. Packed with information and local history. A group of 12 of us visited to explore the subterranean architectural spaces. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels organised a bespoke tour for us across 2 different sites. We looked at the banqueting hall and the cathedral like 4 story deep quarry spaces. Our tour guide was Tom, and he was so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the history and the rediscovery of the tunnels (being one of the volunteers that helped to unearth the spaces for the public) 



This would be great for anyone local and visitors to the city who want a truly Liverpool Experience.  Its damp down there and there are staircases to descend, (so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and check accessibility requirements) but this all adds to the experience!

						Great visit to Friends of Williamson Tunnels Having brought ex-scouser friends back to Liverpool for a couple of days I was not sure what they would make of the Williamson Tunnels friends site. They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. 					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

The tunnels are a true enigmatic mystery. The guide (Mike)  is highly knowledgeable, passionate and interesting. A huge amount of credit must go to the whole team for what they’ve achieved in the last 25 years to keep this going on a shoestring budget. Compared to when I last visited this part of the tunnels in 2002, they have done SO much! The team truly embodies the Scouse spirit of hard work, grit, passion and determination. If you get chance, trust me, this is worth a visit.

						An excellent place to spend some time learning about one of Liverpools hidden gems. This is one of Liverpools hidden gems. 						Wonderful visit. The many of the knowledgeable volunteers have been there since the tunnels original rediscovery and they have worked constantly over 30 plus dedicated years to open more of the tunnels, bucket at a time due to limited space, a truly impressive achievement that is a fitting tribute  to the original works of the man himself. A unique experience of a unique part of Liverpool history. This should be visited by everyone, I know I will be back again.
					
					We visited on 14th June for a free guided tour with Tom. He was really entertaining and really brought the story and history of the place to life. All the volunteers we met were super friendly and knowledgable and willing to answer questions. I would really recommend a visit to this unique site, it is something you won't get anywhere else and well worth a voluntary donation to help support their work and new discoveries as they keep digging.

Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!
					
					Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.

The underground spaces themselves have been painstakingly emptied of the spoil that had filled them, and have been restored to their as built condition.  The collection of items that have been removed from the tunnels when they were used as a dumping ground provides some interesting snapshots of Britain over the decades.  The FoWT aim to find the other tunnels & underground spaces and restore them to how they were originally built - you really do get the impression that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Your guides are not just well informed, but were the people who dug out these chambers!!!! So you are getting first-hand recounts of their discoveries, living their excitement of finding a new tunnel, or artefact - hearing it from them brings it to life.

Amazing that this exists, and has not been destroyed by city developments and new buildings.

					It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. 						Had a great afternoon at the Paddington site. Mike was very knowledgeable and friendly . The history of the tunnels was interesting to learn about. The tour lasted about an hour and a half. Mike was our tour guide and very knowledgeable and so enthusiastic, took us deep down to the Paddington Williamson tunnel site, let us explored together when and how to discover, protect this amazing heritage. Let us learned more about the history and the details of every corner inside the tunnel. The sandstones, the arch, the decorations on the wall, the pottery, the secret under the cup, codd-neck bottle etc.., many many that they discovered were so amazing. Definitely worth to go
