Brilliant Experience What a fantastic thing to experience! I've lived near Liverpool for nearly 30 years, and never knew there was something like this lying below the city. Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels.

I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.

The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool.

Tours are free, but you can leave a donation at the end.

It's best to book as far in advance as is possible, especially during summer peak season.

Unique experience We really enjoyed the tunnels and experience. This is run by enthusiastic volunteers so not a polished commercial experience. It was fascinating to go underground and see the huge tunnels and the artifacts.

As a history buff I was a bit disappointed about there being no knowledge of why the tunnels were built. My first thought was smuggling. But when you see the size of the chamber and the multiple levels maybe smuggling doesn’t make sense as the tunnels would have been more basic for smuggling.

I really wanted to know the impact on the tunnels on subsidence on local properties as the tunnels cover a large area. The tunnels are a mad idea i really wanted to know ‘why’.

The staff were really nice and helpful.

We did enjoy it and made a donation. But it was like watching a series and being left in a cliff hanger not knowing’why’!!!!

Williamson Tunnels - Why? Quirky attraction to see the Willamson Tunnels probably dug by soldiers with no other work returning from the Napoleonic Wars after 1812.

Extremely wealthy philanthropist Joseph Williamson decided to dig tunnels under parts of Liverpool to employ out of work soldiers for no other reasons than he had money and he could.

We had an excellent guide in archaeology student Georgia who knew her stuff and helped make our visit memorable to this quirky attraction.

History below Liverpool When visiting places always like to do something different. As such booked Williamsons Tunnels in advance and was not disappointed. Tom , our quite provided a full explanation about them and the ‘exploring’ was very interesting. No charge but a donation is gladly accepted and well worth it

Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. All the volunteers were friendly, polite and welcoming. I won’t say too much about the tour other than you need to go and have the experience . It’s fascinating! Best day out in liverpool Wow. We had the best time. As three 21 year old girls we were not sure to expect, and it is not our usual activity, but we enjoyed ourselves immensely. We spent two hours in and around the tunnels in a group of 7 with Chris as our guide, he was both friendly and extremely knowledgeable, answering all our questions in detail and sharing all the facts which we can now pass on whenever we go over the tunnels! I will definitely recommend this to all my friends, it’s must do in liverpool! Thanks for such a great day!

Awesome is overused these days, but it definitely applies here A fabulous experience from start to finish - Liverpool is blessed to
A) Have had Joseph Williamson, who had the means, imagination and philanthropy to construct such wonders and
B) Have the Friends of Williamson Tunnels who are such a dedicated, enthusiastic, talented and resourceful team of volunteers who undertake vast amounts of work and research so that the general public can witness these structures that have been "lost" for over 150 years.
Even better, there are reckoned to be many more tunnels to discover and the team are working tirelessly to uncover them!
As far as I'm concerned, the Williamson tunnels are easily one of the best attractions in Liverpool!

An amazing experience This tour is amazing and takes you deep into the tunnels below. It is a real experience and provides you with an insight into the history of the tunnels. Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident. This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. A special thank you to Tom for sharing his wealth of knowledge along the way.

An excellent place to spend some time learning about one of Liverpools hidden gems. This is one of Liverpools hidden gems. Me (49) my son (12) and daughter (6) throughly enjoyed this experience. The tunnels are a true enigmatic mystery. The guide (Mike) is highly knowledgeable, passionate and interesting. A huge amount of credit must go to the whole team for what they’ve achieved in the last 25 years to keep this going on a shoestring budget. Compared to when I last visited this part of the tunnels in 2002, they have done SO much! The team truly embodies the Scouse spirit of hard work, grit, passion and determination. If you get chance, trust me, this is worth a visit.

Fascinating Tour Guide Mandy gave us a fascinating tour of the tunnels and their history. All the volunteers were friendly and welcoming. Well worth a visit.

An intriguing Liverpool city centre historical oddity for the adventurous visitor I had a long visit with an expert guide (shorter ones are available) and I found it a most exciting and absolutely fascinating glimpse of somewhere which is highly unusual and remains a bit of an enigma. I came all the way from London for the day to visit it, and felt that it was well worth the journey.

But it may not suit everyone. This is not the sort of attraction with silken ropes, interactive video, fridge magnets and 5 star loos. It is work in progress, a visit to a spectacular archaeological dig, in a quiet back street near the city centre, manned by enthusiasts, and where you may get mud on your clothes. There were lots of stairs. I was kitted out with hard hat and high viz.

I think it deserves bus loads of visitors, but it does not get them, apparently because it is rather offbeat and not everyone appreciates dank holes in the ground. With only discerning visitors, at least the volunteer workers have more time there for further digging! It is only open on a day or two in the week, so book your visit in advance.

Fascinating slice of subterranean history Really fantastic experience - so interesting and unexpected. Our guide Mike was super friendly & knowledgeable, and very patient waiting for my mum to traverse the many steps! Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Liverpool. I hope the council gives them to permission to excavate more tunnels soon!

Must see attraction Such a fantastic visit - Tony the guide was wonderful and so knowledgeable. Many friendly volunteers who do a cracking job and you can help yourself to tea and coffee etc beforehand if you arrive early. So much to learn and a must see in Liverpool.

A Grand Day Out Well, what can I say?

We came back to visit Williamson’s Tunnels in Liverpool after our last trip over 15 years ago, when we were lowered down into the tunnels in a harness on a block and tackle from above, feeling a bit like “a puppet on a string”

This time we booked a tour and returned with some friends. As it turned out, it was just us, our friends, and Mandy, our tour guide. What a bonus that was! Mandy was absolutely brilliant—friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and great fun throughout. She really helped make the whole experience special.

We also met the rest of the team above ground and had a laugh about how much things had changed since our last visit. The work that has been done is fantastic.

Every corner seems to reveal another treasure, and the whole place is fascinating. There is so much to see and learn that the time just flew by. In fact, at one point we even ended up singing “When I’m Calling You” in one of the lower caverns to experience the acoustics!

Britain’s Got Talent, here we come although it would definitely have to be filmed in Williamson’s Tunnels for the full effect!

All joking aside, this was one of the best days out we’ve had in ages. A huge thank you to Mandy and everyone involved in preserving and sharing this remarkable piece of Liverpool’s history. We had an absolute ball and can’t wait to come back again.

Absolutely awesome Second time I have been . Just an incredible place really amazing piece of social history. Sadly the local council refuse to give it heritage listing so it is likely to close, g and see it while you can. Best bit of the uk I have seen.

Awesome. Wow. What a great insight into a fascinating man. The tunnels are an awesome place to visit and Mandy gave us a great tour. The tour gets better with a glimpse of the " Ballroom" through a grate in the floor and when you eventually get to the bottom it takes some beating.

Lovely experience It was a lovely tour, and very suprising also as we had no former knowledge of how large the cave system actually is. Really glad we went to see it after living next to them for a year. Would recommend!

Great tour. Highly recommend taking it. What an interesting tour. Been meaning to do it for ages. Mandy was our guide. My gosh she was so knowledgeable and fun, throwing in lots of little stories about the tunnels but also snippets of historical information on Liverpool itself. When you drive in, it looks like there isn't anything there, so it's quite a shock once you go underground. What a feat of engineering and vision. Highly recommend the tour and can only hope that the Heritage Centre can get saved. Too many sites in the city have been dismissed by city Councils. We have an amazing history and it should all be celebrated, including Mr Williamson.

You must visit the Tunnels Great bunch of people, good banter ( we were in Liverpool after all) . The tour by Chris was very informative and for me one of the the measures of a good trip is that I learned something, which I did. Fascinating Underground Experience My visit to the Williamson Tunnels was very interesting and informative. The tour was engaging and provided a fascinating insight into the history and construction of the tunnel system. I was especially impressed by the underground atmosphere and the enthusiasm of Phil the guide, who shared many background stories and details. You can really see how much work and passion goes into preserving this unique place. Highly recommended for anyone interested in history, architecture, or unusual attractions.

Interesting history underneath Edge Hill Really enjoyed the tour with Tom! You could tell his passion and enthusiasm for the history (and mystery) of the Williamson "tunnels". I also enjoyed that it was a small tour group which made it easy to see/hear. The tour is a bit long at 2 hours, and maybe could be condensed to max 90 minutes, but overall I enjoyed it and would encourage others to visit.

Fascinating experience into the underground world created by Williamson Fascinating experience into the underground world created by Williamson. Having seen the tunnels on various TV shows, our guide, Mike, gave a captivating tour with stories from his years of tunnelling on the site as a volunteer, and interesting details of the variety of artifacts found. This is a working site, with new tunnels and spaces still being discovered. Well worth a visit - and we will be returning to see their progress from time to time.

Very interesting and great value. We decided to take out a friends of the tunnels membership so we could do the extended tour of the house and we are very glad we did. It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. There are quite a few steps, which was fine for us, but worth mentioning for anyone who struggles with mobility.

Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels tour I found this to be a fascinating tour and our guide Tony was very interesting to listen to as he guided us around the tunnels (quarries). It was fascinating to see all of the pieces that had been reclaimed from when the tunnels were filled with Liverpool’s rubbish and hear little anecdotes about them. You need to be comfortable going up and down stairs for the tour.

Highly recommended Having arrived promptly for our scheduled tour at the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre we were very disappointed to discover that our booking slot hadn't been registered despite e mail confirmation. We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. Terrific Tunnels! What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. Well worth the visit We were recommended this tour by friends who had done it, and it didn’t disappoint. We had a great guide in Richard who was enthusiastic and brought to life the story of this mysterious network of tunnels and the man who’d created them. This is a hidden gem and deserves to be shouted about.

Walk in the footsteps of the Mole of Edge Hill Who would have thought we would discover such a labyrinth of tunnels under the streets of Liverpool courtesy of the Friends of Williamsons Tunnels? What the volunteers have done to discover and uncover this magical place is remarkable. Our small group was guided through the tunnels by our friendly and knowledgeable guide Mike who coincidentally was who I had email contact with to arrange our tour. The response to my enquiry was speedy and we were all set to go. We continued on to an extended tour and we spent several interesting hours in total exploring the work of Mr Williamson. I would highly recommend visiting the tunnels for a unique experience you won’t forget.

Loved the tour We had a really enjoyable afternoon visiting the tunnels - couldn’t fault it. Our guide was excellent and gave a thorough recount of the history. The volunteers are really passionate about preserving the tunnels and so they should be. Definitely will visit again with others.

Amazing experience We went on a tour of the Williamson tunnels today and it was absolutely amazing. There was only the 2 of us with our tour guide, Tom, and he was so friendly and really informative, he really knew his stuff!
It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.
The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.
I wish they were given the permissions and also funding needed for them to carry on the amazing work they are doing.
Thankyou so much again to Tom for such a brilliant day.

A ‘must see’ and a great lesson in social history. It was an excellent tour which we thoroughly enjoyed. We’d heard a lot about the tunnels but seeing the scale of the them and the work done by the amazingly dedicated volunteers was awe inspiring. Our guide, Clare, was so proficient and knowledgeable and we were given plenty of time to look around and absorb the information. She was relaxed and very friendly. Without the volunteers places like this would be lost forever.

Interesting A site that I knew existed but had never had the pleasure of visiting- until recently, and I’m so pleased I did. Guided by lovely knowledgeable volunteers, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Family visit at Easter Everyone really enjoyed the visit, even the teenagers they said 'it was cool'. Impressive the work of the volunteers who have made it possible for the public to see the Williamsons Tunnels.

Fantastic FREE Experience packed with facts from a knowledgeable volunteer A fabulous 1.5 hour experience. Packed with information and local history. A group of 12 of us visited to explore the subterranean architectural spaces. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels organised a bespoke tour for us across 2 different sites. We looked at the banqueting hall and the cathedral like 4 story deep quarry spaces. Our tour guide was Tom, and he was so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the history and the rediscovery of the tunnels (being one of the volunteers that helped to unearth the spaces for the public)

This would be great for anyone local and visitors to the city who want a truly Liverpool Experience. Its damp down there and there are staircases to descend, (so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and check accessibility requirements) but this all adds to the experience!

This was not my first visit,I like to visit annually because the experience is magical.

Thank you all for such an amazing day out Went today with a group of friends, it was an impromptu trip out, we're all local to the area and to find such a hidden gem so close to home is unbelievable , our tour Guide Tom was very thorough and really give us a great experience of the tunnels! Just Go ! What can I say ? Amazing !
Access can be difficult if you have mobility issues.
Otherwise, just go, you will not be disappointed to see the amount of work that has gone in to not only creating these amazing 'caverns', but to making them and the artefacts accessible once more.

What's lurking underground in Liverpool! We did'nt really know what to expect on our visit to the tunnels so we were both astounded when we were led underground! Our guide Mike had so much information to share with the group and he was happy to answer any questions. I would highly recommend the tour to anyone, we don't come from Liverpool but if you do you should visit here and learn what is lurking underground in your city!

Amazing! Totally intriguing and a real privilege to walk through the accessible tunnels. Mike was excellent (and very patient!) as our guide and shared many stories and theories as we ventured through all 4 levels of the tunnels. Let's hope they are able to keep digging to allow us all to see more!

Hidden Gem! Literally! What a fascinating visit! This really is Liverpool's little hidden gem!
(I'm at a loss why there is not more positive support and assistance). This is a unique part of the city's history. There is just so much more to be explored.
Our guide Chris was both entertaining and informative. His explanations really brought the history to life.
The final steps to the lowest level defeated me! However, it was still possible to see and hear all about that area, from above.
Sturdy shoes a must! And, don't wear your best clothes!!!!!

MUST VISIT This is a MUST VISIT site on any trip to Liverpool. We knew nothing of the history prior to the tour. Don't be put off by the unassuming entrance and location. Our guide Chris was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He didn't reveal all the information at first and that made it all the more intriguing. Absolutely fascinating tour. The volunteers are to be commended for their work and commitment. Will definitely visit again to see more.

Brilliant Today 4 friends visited the Williamson Tunnels and taken on our tour by Mandy?? and she was absolutely superb. I have been a few times and it is always brilliant. Fascinating experience I had long wanted to visit the tunnels so I decided to join one of the tours as part of the Heritage Open Days. Our guide was Tom, who was very knowledgeable about the history of the tunnels. It was a fascinating experience into a lesser known part of Liverpool`s history.

A great and memorable visit Great tour and very informative about what could be considered a hidden jewel in Liverpool. Shrouded in mystery and full of interesting information about the area and perhaps the reasons for Master Williamson to build these tunnels. The work done by the volunteers to save this important historical site is absolutely wonderful. I recommend anyone interested in local history and how folk lived around the Napoleanic wars and after, should not miss this tour when visiting Liverpool. FOWT As part of our 50th anniversary weekend we decided to visit FOWT. From the first inquiry Mike arranged to fit us into a very busy schedule. As soon as you go underground and see the original site photos and start to hear the history of the dig you understand the massive task and achievement so far. The tunnels are fascinating layer after layer and the array of the many items found during the dig are quite incredible and displayed beautifully . Many of the items make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. As we entered one chamber Mike asked if anyone would like to sing to appreciate the acoustics, my husband being a Liverpool fan sang you’ll never walk alone, what a memorable experience to take away with us. Mikes knowledge and passion for the site made our trip even more enjoyable but as he said the more answers you look for the more questions arise. Best wishes to Mike and all FOWT for future digs and possibly some answers. I would highly recommend a visit whether you are a tourist or like us from Liverpool to discover some of the secrets of our wonderful city.

Interesting Group of four of us made the short journey from Warrington to view this interesting anomaly. Made to feel welcome by the enthusiastic staff. Mandy our guide was very knowledgable and gave an excellent tour. A lot of hard work gone into presenting the site as it is today , well done to all the volunteers. Just a shame that there is so much more underground in this area that we may never be able to see.

Lovely little afternoon out learning about such a fascinating topic. We (3 adults) came along not knowing what to expect. All the volunteers and staff were very welcoming from arrival. Tony our guide was very informative and passionate about the tunnels. We found the experience extremely interesting.
We can’t wait to come back and explore more sections.

A fascinating view into old Liverpool Our tour of the tunnels was expertly guided by Chris. It was very interesting to hear the tales about how the rubble was removed from the tunnels and look at the many artefacts that had been unearthed. Chris did well picking out interesting articles such as the Edward 7th commemorative china cup. Overall 2 hours well spent.

Superb historical excavations What a brilliant experience guided by the very knowledgeable Tom. What he doesn't know about the tunnels and the history isn't worth knowing. We only experienced the Paddington excavation which is probably less than one tenth of the whole system. Will definitely be booking on the main tour. The amount of discarded artifacts from the Victorian era onwards was fascinating. Well done to all involved. We even discovered that my wife is related to William Boote, the grocer who occupied several of the Williamson buildings!

Guided tour of the Williamson Tunnels Went to the tunnels with two friends, the staff were very helpful and friendly. There were 7 of us in the tour group, our tour guide was a lady called Mandy who was very helpful and knowledgeable, took her time to fully explain things, and to point different things out to the group on our walk around.
I and my 2 friends really enjoyed the visit and the tour, in fact we joined the Friends of Williamson society

A very interesting alternative thing to do This is an entirely volunteer-led free tour that takes you down below the streets of Liverpool to a network of underground caverns. I don't want to spoil any more of the story, as the guide will tell you about the history but the volunteers have a lot of passion and dedication and it shows!

Birthday day out with FoWT Went today to visit the Williamson tunnels for my husband's birthday and we had a fascinating visit. The tunnels themselves are so interesting but what makes this organisation is the intrepid group of subterranean explorers who run it. Our guide was Tom, who was one of the excavators of the space we visited, and his passion was absolutely contagious. The tour overran, we were so busy talking, but the time flew by. We will be back to visit some of the members spaces!

Extended tour I had a fantastic time at the tunnel, I felt very welcome, and was given a lot of interesting information. I would definitely recommend taking a trip here and becoming a member to ensure these tunnels stay open for all to see.

A super visit-again. Decided to suprise my brother in law with a visit to to see the tunnels. He visits from derbyshire, and loves Liverpool, as their is always something to see and do.
So having visited in Feb, we knew this would be right up his street. And with a fab tour by Claire, there was a fair bit of info to take in, but it was different to the previous tour, so was like a whole new experience. We were not dissappointed at all, and decided to join. We will visit again of course.

Excellent experience, would highly recommend We visited with my 2 young sons (5 & 12 years old) along with my elderly father, we all had a wonderful time and the tour was expertly delivered by our guide Mike. The size and depth of the site is breathtaking and the amount of work undertaken by the team to excavate the site difficult to comprehend. Fun alternative to the usual What a funny place! I was the only person on my tour, and the guide was really nice and informative. I'm glad I learned about this, not sure if it's a must do, but it is interesting and if you are looking for something that is a bit different, this is a good choice.

What an amazing place! A group of 24 of us went today. We were made very welcome. Our guides were enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. The whole place was fascinating. There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. Just bear in mind that you are going underground and there are steps and uneven surfaces. There are 2 separate sections to visit. We were there for atleast 2 and a half hours. There's also a little shop if you want to buy souvenirs.

Passionate Volunteers Make This Place Exceptional - A Must Visit! Such a unique and personalised experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history, caves, community, or simply something wonderfully quirky. We were only visiting for a weekend and the tours were initially sold out; however, Mike was incredibly helpful. As soon as a cancellation came through, he informed us immediately and we were able to secure our places.
The tour is delivered either by one of the founders or by those who took part in the excavations themselves, meaning the knowledge shared is rich, personal, and engaging no matter how many times you visit. We were able to ask numerous questions, and at the end we even met almost the entire team who have been working there voluntarily for decades.
I truly loved it and deeply admire the dedication of this community in preserving the heritage and stories of the past for future generations.

An engineering marvel I’m not sure any written review will ever do justice to the experience of actually setting foot in the Williamson tunnels. From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. My wife and I both live in Liverpool, and now we are retired we have more time to visit our city and a visit to Williamson tunnels was always on our list. We are so glad we have done it now. My only disappointment is that such a wonderful treasure in our city is not funded by the council or some sort of trust. It is all down to donations. Mandy passed on her local knowledge of the area and the tunnels making the trip even more enjoyable.

Super visit to Williamson Tunnels by Chester U3A A superb visit to the Williamson Tunnels by the Industrial Heritage group from Chester U3A. A great welcome and organisation and the guides were excellent and so enthusiastic. Even provided an extra person to help one of our members who suffers from Parkinsons.
The visit itself is highly recommended, not only for the tunnels but the amazing artefacts on display.

Halloween tour Just took granddaughter to Halloween tour, she loves the way they have set it up, also kept her interested all the while, can't praise the guides and the rest of the staff enough, second time I have been ,still got more questions

Wish I'd visited ages ago- great fun & really interesting! Why didn't I visit earlier? Highly recommended. The 'tunnels' are much more varied than I expected and had several different forms & uses. Lots of photos and finds on display, some prompting nostalgic memories (I am a post-WWII baby boomer) but mostly much older. Our guide, Chris, was knowledgeable and looked after us extremely well. The site is well lit, with good attention to safety. The occasional areas of uneven floor were well-advertised and the steps and stairs were all very safe & secure. Great fun and I learnt lots about earlier Liverpool

Hidden historic gem A completely unique and wholly immersive experience. If you can go visit these tunnels then you definitely should, because wow! I never would have guessed such an intriguing piece of Liverpool history would be underneath an urban car park. Our guide Tom was very knowledgeable, engaging and enthusiastic.

Definitely worth a visit! We had a thoroughly enjoyable tour of the tunnels with our guide Tom. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the history and layout of the tunnels, having been one of the people who worked hard excavating on the site. Amazing tour with dedicated volunteers Tom and the other volunteers made us feel so welcome! The tunnels and caverns are so fascinating, and it's wonderful that the volunteers have put their heart and souls into excavating the tunnels and keeping the whole thing alive for visitors to experience. Tom was so knowledgable, he was able to answer so many of our questions. We highly recommend this tour! Do allow for a bit more than an hour though, as we were there for longer in the end.

The best thing to see in Liverpool This is truly an amazing experience, to go down these tunnels, which no one is quite sure why they are there is brilliant.
Why Williamson decided to build all these tunnels all over the place and at different depths is a mystery. But, it makes it an absolute ‘must do’ if your in Liverpool.
I hope they get the funding and the permissions to dig more, I love this hidden quirky history of our country.

We are part of a social group and we attended the Williamson tunnels as part of a group outing.
We would really recommend this tour as a fascinating and interesting tour to look into Liverpools past history.
We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.

After a brief safety talk given by Tom our group guide, we were then taken down to the first of four levels of this amazing tour.

It's hard to imagine all the hard work that the volunteers have done to get the tunnels in the condition that they are today.
It just got better the lower we went into the tunnels.

Tom our guide told a fascinating story of who Mr Williamson was and how he started and then tried to look after the poor and unemployed people of the time, it really was an amazing story and it does show all the hard work that all the volunteers had done to get to where they are today.

If you want an unique and different event, you will not be disappointed by your visit to the tunnels.

Fascinating look back at a fascinating part of Liverpool’s history I’d always wanted to do this tour as a long term urbexer, it pushed all my buttons & I was dying to know more.
The visit was booked as part of my partner’s birthday trip, I knew he’d love it as it’s such a unique place steeped in history and intrigue.
It’s a fascinating look back in time to a really interesting & eccentric local philanthropist, the King of Edge Hill, Joseph Williamson.
We loved seeing the tunnels themselves, the remains of his home and all the little pieces of life back then that had been left behind and later uncovered.
Our guide Claire was amazing, interesting and engaging as well as absolutely lovely. We had a blast, we will be back another time for sure. We left with more questions than answers!
Such an underrated place, the jewel of Edge Hill

Memorable, enjoyable, and I want to go back for more! I had no idea what to expect, but my visit into the Williamson Tunnels on Mason Street far exceeded any expectations. This is not some polished visitor attraction, but rather a living, breathing ongoing archaeology project run by enthusiastic and very knowledgeable volunteers. I didn't have time to explore all the tunnels on this visit, but I will definitely be back for more. It's free to visit, and although I joined the Friends and made a donation, there's absolutely no pressure to do so.

Fascinating experience beneath your feet Visited the tunnels on Sunday lunchtime as a family with two teenagers. Excellent communication from the volunteers beforehand to book the visit and to find it on the day which was straightforward.

Mike was our tour guide on the day and was excellent, clearly passionate about volunteering on the project to unearth more of these amazing tunnels. He was full of knowledge and shared as much as he could answering all the questions the group had.

It’s such an unusual experience to walk along a road in Liverpool knowing there is a huge void beneath your feet and then seconds later climb down to see it for yourselves.

The tour lasted for about two hours and was structured really well, revealing more of the tunnels and the history as you go.

What the group of volunteers have achieved in discovering and digging out these tunnels bucket by bucket is amazing.

Thoroughly recommended.

Going Underground in Liverpool My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm.

Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging, knowledgable and down to earth!

The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

All in all a great afternoon!

Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!
You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.
Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked 🙂
There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).
The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!
Or even volunteer 🙂
All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! We ended up being the only people on the 12:30 tour, but our guide Tom still gave us a ‘private’ tour - he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate that the tour still went ahead.
I will probably return again in a couple of years, and see if any new evidence or tunnels have been found by then!

Recommended I was there with two friends of mine. Really nice experience. Our guide was Clare, who is really passionate and prepared on Williamson's story. It was an experience different from the usual touristic spots.

Well worth a visit and great team of knowledgeable volunteers. These hardworking volunteers give up precious time and are so passionate and dedicated to their role and it was very much appreciated. Really interesting, honest and informative. Only comment would be keep moving as we were standing around for quite a long time, but that aside, brilliant and recommended.

It’s free of charge but you’ll be happy to pay once you see it! Mike gave us a tour today of both the Paddington site and Joseph Williamson’s house site and both were absolutely brilliant. The Victorian relics found on the site during the digs are on display and it is so interesting to see daily household items from that era and piece together a picture of what life was like in Liverpool during that time. The tunnels themselves are vast and the depth of them is just incomprehensible, especially when the intention behind them remains unknown! I’ve lived in Liverpool all my life and I knew the tunnels existed but I never knew the full extent of them (and I still don’t as Mike explained that there is so much more to be discovered!) I really really 100% recommend that everyone does this tour. Hopefully the council sees sense and provides the necessary lease and the digging can continue because it would be such a shame if this amount of history was to be lost!

Great time at 39 Mason Street, Edge Hill L7 3EW ! We read their good instructions to get here, and our Uber driver (£7.92 from Waterfront ) brought us to the door.
We had to wait for others who DID NOT READ the message properly!!

A worthwhile trip when in Liverpool! After our 30 min walk to the Williamson Tunnels (from the central) at first we thought ‘what lies beneath here?’. Well, a lot of history and facts! Tom, our guide, was very passionate and great at story telling. Friendly and welcoming, any questions asked were answered! Would recommend!

Fascinating! Had a fantastic visit here - Mike, our guide, was knowledgeable, engaging and gave us an excellent insight into the tunnels despite the lack of solid historical information. The underground spaces themselves have been painstakingly emptied of the spoil that had filled them, and have been restored to their as built condition. The collection of items that have been removed from the tunnels when they were used as a dumping ground provides some interesting snapshots of Britain over the decades. The FoWT aim to find the other tunnels & underground spaces and restore them to how they were originally built - you really do get the impression that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Odd day out Average experience. But surprisingly interesting in the end. Good for wet weather event. Poor souls who built it all. Not many eating places nearby

Really interesting visit, worth seeing Fascinating to see these tunnels and all the artefacts found when clearing them out. Also fascinating to hear about the very eccentric Joseph Williamson.
Our guide, Clare, was a passionate volunteer who has been involved in exploring and clearing out these tunnels for many many years.
FoWT do not have a slick visitor centre - just a portakabin (and a portaloo) - but the volunteers are clearly very knowledgeable, experienced and passionate enough to give their time for free tours.
A quirky, unique experience - definitely worth the visit.

A fascinating insight into a long-forgotten history Inspired by a television report, I visited the Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels. After a friendly welcome and a safety briefing, Phil, an experienced guide, led us into Liverpool’s underground world. The construction, scale, and history of the tunnels, as well as the numerous artefacts from long-forgotten times, were just as impressive as the enthusiasm of the volunteers who are dedicated to preserving and further exploring this historic heritage. Highly recommended!

Great tour full of information A friend booked for a group of us to do this, we are all locals but knew very little about the tunnels except that they existed. Turned up not knowing what to expect but the staff were all so friendly and lovely, full of knowledge and you can tell its a passion of theirs. Our guide Tom was great and gave us so much information and had a laugh with us. After the tour we went back to the unit and collected our things from the lockers and gave our high vis and hard hats back, will 100% be back with family members. Would recommend to anyone who wants to do something different in our city.

Absolutely incredible experience This is such an amazing experience, the guide had an extensive knowledge as he has worked on this project for quiet some years.
He was engaging and I cluded the children. Suitable for anyone who can walk stairs. It's free which is a steal they should be charging, it's donations which for all the amazing hard work and effort put into this you should definitely donate anything you can.

Tunnel tour Me and my friend attended the tour with Mike, he knew so much about the tunnels and it was even more interesting as he had been part of the team that had cleared them! It was interesting and fun, definitely recommended!

Great visit to learn some local history Our guide was Tom, who gave a very interesting recount of the history of Joseph Williamson and the rediscovery and excavation of the tunnels. The tour lasted almost exactly the advertised 1.5 hours. Being from Liverpool, a visit to tunnels is something I’d wanted to do for a long time and it was lovely to see people from as far as the US in our group of 11. The volunteers do a great job of preserving this fabulous and weird bit of local history.

One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. Firstly we were welcomed by the volunteer guides and offered tea/coffee and biscuits. Everyone was friendly. The tour was amazing and our guide spent time answering all our questions. We were given loads of time to see everything. I would highly recommend that visitors become members and book the full tour. I've been on various Liverpool tours and I would rate this one amongst the best.

Well Worth A Visit If you are ever in Liverpool, you should really try to visit this amazing attraction. The tunnels themselves are breath taking, with a remarkable history.
However, I really need to praise the volunteers running the tours. They were so friendly and welcoming. Unlike many commercial attractions, we were not hurried and made to feel at home instantly. Clare our guide was fantastic, she was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, we were in awe. She really did go out of her way to make our tour feel special.

Excellent Tour. Visit highly recommended. . Excellent tour given by Tony. The whole team were very knowledgeable, enthusiatic and friendly. We did the extended tour of the tunnels and really enjoyed our visit. The team have applied to English Heritage for a listing which will help them receive Local Authority permission to expand their area of excavation. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels enterprise is a charity with all the excavation work and ensuring site safety and visitors tours being done by local volunteers.. It relies on local donations from visitors to keep going. Hopefully they will be successful in attracting Lottery funding in the future.

I strongly recommend a visit to see the great work the team are doing.

What an intriguing place. Well worth a visit 😁👍 What an amazing little discovery I thought to myself as we walked up the road to the entrance from the car park, our first fantastic host telling us the history of the Joseph Williamson and the tunnels discovery.

Right from the get go, going down those first few steps underground this place captivated my imagination. It's like something out of a book. It's so fascinating to see and hear the history of these odd spaces, all whilst being stood inside them deep underground on some unassuming street in Liverpool.

Definitely worth a visit or three. Great guys that run the place who are all volunteer. The work that has gone into excavating and rediscovering these spaces is incredible.

Go visit and see for yourself, this allows the FOWT to keep finding more of this incredible story.

Wonderful visit. Recently visited the tunnels with a group of friends and received a warm welcome from our guides Mandy and Clare who throughout our visit, were very knowledgable, and patient and all delivered with a great sense of humour. Our small group all felt that our tour had opened their eyes not only about the work that the Friends continue to do , but also a rare insight into a part of Livepools historical social history which is often overlooked. I cannot recommend visiting this place enough.

So glad we went 👍 Super interesting place, and super friendly guys. Thoroughly enjoyed. Definitely worth taking a look at. Never judge a book by it's building facade 🙂

Epic! Really enjoyed our trip underground with our excellent guide Chris. Very knowledgeable and explained everything really well. We were very lucky to have had our own personal guide as the tour we wanted to go on was fully booked so Mike very kindly arranged our tour with Chris. Cannot recommend this tour enough! Just epic!!!

Great and informative City History. Amazing trip today with 14 members of the Boys Brigade from within the Liverpool Battalion.
It’s amazing when you find out so much more than you knew about our own city.
Tour was well run with informative guides and are a credit to what should be a Listed Site of Major Historical Importance.
Should be better funded so that the volunteers can do more exploration and add to the wealth of history they have already discovered.

Amazing guided tunnel tour! Absolutely loved exploring these tunnels! We had an amazing tour guide named Mike who didn’t leave out a detail when telling us about the history of the tunnels. 100% recommend for all ages!

What a good way to spend an hour or so A really interesting place, lots of history and very enthusiastic and friendly volunteers. Clare was a very good guide and explained the tunnels clearly to us.

Perfect Tour What an amazing tour ! Tom was an excellent guide and took his time with the group. I took my dad who was 96 and Tom took time to make sure he wasn’t left behind. Very interesting and so worth a visit

100% recommend I wholeheartedly recommend this experience. It will be unforgettable. With the help of Tony and Laura I saw Liverpool in a different way. From my point of view it was a 100% experience. Words cannot fully describe this experience, until you see it with your own eyes and enjoy it.

the tour guide is a great comedian It is one of those small lesser known attractions you can visit in a city. You also have to call to make a reservation, can you imagine. Do not expect very spectacular things, but it is small, friendly, something you can bring up sympathy for and the tour guide was great comedian. It was worth missing a train for.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Not to be missed Gem of an experience and one not to be missed. Mike was a fantastic Guide and had been involved with FOWT for many years involved in the clearances which enabled him to share many anecdotes which further illuminated the fascinating history of the project.
Williamson was a fascinating character and I look forward to returning and touring more of the tunnels.
It’s surprising the City Council & Universities aren’t more actively involved in this incredible excavation project and discovering more about the social and economic history of the local community

Great visit to Friends of Williamson Tunnels Having brought ex-scouser friends back to Liverpool for a couple of days I was not sure what they would make of the Williamson Tunnels friends site. They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. The very favourable impressions were augmented by the verve with which our guide, Mandy, explained everything from the layout to the articles found during excavation. All in all a very enjoyable visit.
