					Brilliant Experience What a fantastic thing to experience! I've lived near Liverpool for nearly 30 years, and never knew there was something like this lying below the city. Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.



The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool. 



Tours are free, but you can leave a donation at the end. 



It's best to book as far in advance as is possible, especially during summer peak season.

Our guide Mike had so much information to share with the group and he was happy to answer any questions. 					Superb historical excavations What a brilliant experience guided by the very knowledgeable Tom. What he doesn't know about the tunnels and the history isn't worth knowing. The tunnels themselves have been incredibly restored and the tour is very immersive.

Would highly recommend to anyone who has even a fleeting interest in history.

						History below Liverpool When visiting places always like to do something different. As such booked Williamsons Tunnels in advance and was not disappointed. Tom , our quite provided a full explanation about them and the ‘exploring’ was very interesting. No charge but a donation is gladly accepted and well worth it
					
					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

						You must visit the Tunnels Great bunch of people, good banter ( we were in Liverpool after all) . 						Welcoming ‘Friends’ Highly recommend this visit! Our guide Chris was very friendly and informative! 						Great tour. Highly recommend taking it. What an interesting tour. Been meaning to do it for ages. Mandy was our guide. My gosh she was so knowledgeable and fun, throwing in lots of little stories about the tunnels but also snippets of historical information on Liverpool itself. When you drive in, it looks like there isn't anything there, so it's quite a shock once you go underground. What a feat of engineering and vision. Highly recommend the tour and can only hope that the Heritage Centre can get saved. Too many sites in the city have been dismissed by city Councils. We have an amazing history and it should all be celebrated, including Mr Williamson.

We did the extended tour of the tunnels and really enjoyed our visit. The team have applied to English Heritage for a listing which will help them receive Local Authority permission to expand their area of excavation. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels enterprise is a charity with all the excavation work and ensuring  site safety  and visitors tours being done by local volunteers.. It relies on local donations from visitors to keep going. Hopefully they will be successful in attracting Lottery funding in the future.

					Interesting history underneath Edge Hill Really enjoyed the tour with Tom! You could tell his passion and enthusiasm for the history (and mystery) of the Williamson "tunnels". 						Liverpools labyrinth The Williamson tunnels are an absolutely marvel of human engineering. A great tour showed off parts of the tunnels that run under Edge Hill in Liverpool. Well worth a visit. Run by a great team of volunteers that make it an exploration to remember.

The 'tunnels' are much more varied than I expected and had several different forms & uses. Lots of photos and finds on display, some prompting nostalgic memories (I am a post-WWII baby boomer) but mostly much older. Our guide, Chris, was knowledgeable and looked after us extremely well. The site is well lit, with good attention to safety. The occasional areas of uneven floor were well-advertised and the steps and stairs were all very safe & secure. It was very interesting to hear the tales about how the rubble was removed from the tunnels and look at the many artefacts that had been unearthed. Chris did well picking out interesting articles such as the Edward 7th commemorative china cup. Overall 2 hours well spent.
					
					An engineering marvel I’m not sure any written review will ever do justice to the experience of actually setting foot in the Williamson tunnels. From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. My wife and I both live in Liverpool, and now we are retired we have more time to visit our city and a visit to Williamson tunnels was always on our list. We are so glad we have done it now. My only disappointment is that such a wonderful treasure in our city is not funded by the council or some sort of trust. It is all down to donations. Mandy passed on her local knowledge of the area and the tunnels making the trip even more enjoyable.

						An engineering marvel I’m not sure any written review will ever do justice to the experience of actually setting foot in the Williamson tunnels. From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. My wife and I both live in Liverpool, and now we are retired we have more time to visit our city and a visit to Williamson tunnels was always on our list. We are so glad we have done it now. My only disappointment is that such a wonderful treasure in our city is not funded by the council or some sort of trust. It is all down to donations. Mandy passed on her local knowledge of the area and the tunnels making the trip even more enjoyable.

						A worthwhile trip when in Liverpool! After our 30 min walk to the Williamson Tunnels (from the central) at first we thought ‘what lies beneath here?’. Well, a lot of history and facts! Tom, our guide, was very passionate and great at story telling. Friendly and welcoming, any questions asked were answered! Would recommend!
					
					Fantastic FREE Experience packed with facts from a knowledgeable volunteer A fabulous 1.5 hour experience. Packed with information and local history. A group of 12 of us visited to explore the subterranean architectural spaces. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels organised a bespoke tour for us across 2 different sites. We looked at the banqueting hall and the cathedral like 4 story deep quarry spaces. Our tour guide was Tom, and he was so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the history and the rediscovery of the tunnels (being one of the volunteers that helped to unearth the spaces for the public) 



This would be great for anyone local and visitors to the city who want a truly Liverpool Experience.  Its damp down there and there are staircases to descend, (so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and check accessibility requirements) but this all adds to the experience!

					A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! 						A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! 					Amazing experience We went on a tour of the Williamson tunnels today and it was absolutely amazing. There was only the 2 of us with our tour guide, Tom, and he was so friendly and really informative, he really knew his stuff!

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

I wish they were given the permissions and also funding needed for them to carry on the amazing work they are doing.

Thankyou so much again to Tom for such a brilliant day.

						Amazing experience We went on a tour of the Williamson tunnels today and it was absolutely amazing. There was only the 2 of us with our tour guide, Tom, and he was so friendly and really informative, he really knew his stuff!

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. 					FOWT As part of our 50th anniversary weekend we decided to visit FOWT. From the first inquiry Mike arranged to fit us into a very busy schedule. As soon as you go underground and see the original site photos and start to hear the history of the dig you understand the massive task and achievement so far.  The tunnels are fascinating layer after layer and the array of the many items found during the dig are quite incredible and displayed beautifully .  Many of the items make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. As we entered one chamber Mike asked if anyone would like to sing to appreciate the acoustics, my husband being a Liverpool fan sang you’ll never walk alone, what a memorable experience to take away with us.  Mikes knowledge and passion for the site made our trip even more enjoyable but as he said the more answers you look for the more questions arise.  Best wishes to Mike and all FOWT for future digs and possibly some answers.  I would highly recommend a visit whether you are a tourist or like us from Liverpool to discover some of the secrets of our wonderful city.

As a history buff I was a bit disappointed about there being no knowledge of why the tunnels were built. My first thought was smuggling. But when you see the size of the chamber and the multiple levels maybe smuggling doesn’t make sense as the tunnels would have been more basic for smuggling.

						Awesome. Wow. What a great insight into a fascinating man. The tunnels are an awesome place to visit and Mandy gave us a great tour. The tour gets better with a glimpse of the " Ballroom" through a grate in the floor and when you eventually get to the bottom it takes some beating.
					
					Highly recommended!! Wow what an amazing experience  we had at FOIWT.. My son and I visited and are already planning  to visit again soon.

Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. 					Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. 					Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels tour I found this to be a fascinating tour and our guide Tony was very interesting to listen to as he guided us around the tunnels (quarries). 					Visited Williamson’s Tunnels yesterday and it was a real hidden gem.



It’s not a big, flashy attraction, but the history is fascinating - an old sandstone quarry covered over with intricate brick and sandstone arches in the early 1800s, then forgotten and filled in. What’s incredible is that everything you see today has been painstakingly uncovered by volunteers since the 1990s  - by hand, bucket by bucket.



Our guide Mike was excellent - knowledgeable, engaging, and handled a few… lively tour members with total professionalism.



The fact it’s entirely volunteer-run makes it even more impressive. They’ve clearly put years of effort into uncovering and preserving something really special, often without the level of support they deserve.



Absolutely worth a visit! It’s unique, authentic, and genuinely interesting.

Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

					5 of our family went to view the cellulars it was our first time and it was absolutely brilliant our guid Tom was very knowledgeable and told us loads of interesting facts we travelled down over 65 feet below ground down to the bass of the cellulars interesting artifacts every were glass bottles jugs pipes beer bottles you must visit its free as well. just give what you can to help and support you are under no obligation to give money

					Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? To be honest I expected more to be excavated than is actually the case because of the rave reviews, though the amount of Earth removed is no less impressive & the lack of progress isn’t the fault of the FoWT. Red tape is holding them up apparently. Best to see this as a work in progress. When more is excavated, no doubt the tunnels will become even more impressive.

As part of our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) involvement within education, we were delighted to take our “Trainee Civil Engineers” from Oastlers School (Bradford), on a site visit to The Williamson Tunnels (Liverpool).



Such a fantastic and unique experience!
					
					What an incredible experience! Absolutely fascinating tour conducted by volunteers who are passionate, knowledgeable and friendly. Happy to answer questions throughout. It really felt like they tailored the experience to the people being shown around, asking questions with genuine interest in us and adding in information about the geology and found objects that they knew would appeal to our group.



The areas explored are well lit and easy to move around in. Guides are quick to point out potential issues (correct ways to descend ladders safely).



All in all it was a tour that revealed lived experience, local Liverpool history, geology, engineering, family drama, Williamson's biography and speculative (well informed) musing.



Don't miss an opportunity to visit and be sure to make a donation to keep this vital work preserving (and expanding the reach of) such incredible spaces afloat for future generations.

It really felt like they tailored the experience to the people being shown around, asking questions with genuine interest in us and adding in information about the geology and found objects that they knew would appeal to our group.



The areas explored are well lit and easy to move around in. Guides are quick to point out potential issues (correct ways to descend ladders safely).



All in all it was a tour that revealed lived experience, local Liverpool history, geology, engineering, family drama, Williamson's biography and speculative (well informed) musing.



Don't miss an opportunity to visit and be sure to make a donation to keep this vital work preserving (and expanding the reach of) such incredible spaces afloat for future generations.

					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. 						Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. 					It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus.
