A Croatian Odyssey

From the Left: The Late, Paul Sowan, Ian Scott and Steve Moran.

A look back to September 2000, when the Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels were invited to submit a paper at an international conference in Croatia. The Late Steve Moran and Ian Scott, along with myself, packed our bags and headed off to the beautiful Adriatic coast on a Subterranean adventure. We attended the ‘3rd International Symposium on Souterrains’, spreading the word of Joseph Williamson and his Tunnels, to conference attendees from all corners of the globe. It was in those early years of FoWT that the international community described the Williamson’s Tunnels as “Possibly the largest subterranean folly in the world”. Following our introduction to the worldwide Subterranean community, FoWT went on to host the 2002, “5th International Symposium on Souterrains” (Souterrains2k2) in Liverpool. This proved to be a great success, further cementing the Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels on the Worldwide stage.

On our return home, Ian wrote this humorous booklet, the story of our travels, our adventures and our mishaps in Croatia. I hope you enjoy it…

  1. A truly delightful story of the trip to Croatia and the International introduction of F.O.W.T. !!

As a Yank from Minnesota, USA, I dream of visiting Liverpool, where touring Williamson’s Tunnels will be #1 on our bucket list.

Secondarily, we’ve heard commentary for 61 years that there are other attractions in Liverpool related to Entomology, particularly Beatles.

As a 9 year old in February 1964 I watched four young Liverpudlian Entomologists featured on the Ed Sullivan TV show, where in one hour these young chaps set a course to forever change the history of Pop Music. EPIC!

    • Many thanks, I hope to have the honour of welcoming you to our fair city and of course to the Williamson’s Tunnels some time soon. Chris
