“The Mines of Alderley Edge”, by Nigel Dibben, of Derbyshire Caving Club.

The next FoWT monthly meeting will be held on 4th July 2022. Our guest speaker on the night will be Nigel Dibben, of Derbyshire Caving Club who will tell us about the “The Mines of Alderley Edge”.

Nigel will tell us about the history of copper, lead and cobalt mining at Alderley Edge from the Bronze Age to the present – a mere 4000 years.

Nigel Dibben has been a caver for over 50 years now and first visited Alderley Edge just over 50 years ago.  My interest in mines has grown as my capability at caving has declined.  When I first went to Alderley Edge, not a great deal was known about the history but a combination of my research greatly helped by a project in the late 1990s led by the National Trust and Manchester Museum means we now have a reasonable idea of what went on and when.  Having said that, we still find new passages and new facts about the mines from time to time.

As usual, the talk will be followed by an update on the latest Williamson Tunnels news and an illustrated presentation by one of the FoWT committee on another aspect of Williamson’s Tunnels, with lots of opportunities for questions and answers.
