On Saturday 28th November, several of our regular volunteers, took a day trip out to the Drakelow Tunnels near Kidderminster. This amazing warren of tunnels carved out of sandstone hillside was built between 1941 and 1942 as a Shadow Factory for the Rover car company where during World War 2, parts for aircraft engines were machined in its 3.5miles of tunnels. Later on, Parts for tank engines were manufactured in the same tunnels and then in 1961 it became a British Government, Top Secret Regional Seat of Government. In 1980 the complex of Tunnels were upgraded to include Blast Doors and became a Top Secret Nuclear Bunker.
The Drakelow Tunnels are now privately owned. However, the restoration work of this amazing complex is in the hands of a similar group of enthusiastic volunteers as ourselves. These hard working guys and girls do a fantastic job and are working to make this huge complex into a Museum for all.
