					Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels tour I found this to be a fascinating tour and our guide Tony was very interesting to listen to as he guided us around the tunnels (quarries). It was fascinating to see all of the pieces that had been reclaimed from when the tunnels were filled with Liverpool’s rubbish and hear little anecdotes about them. You need to be comfortable going up and down stairs for the tour.

						Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels tour I found this to be a fascinating tour and our guide Tony was very interesting to listen to as he guided us around the tunnels (quarries). 						Williamson Tunnels  - Why? Quirky attraction to see the Willamson Tunnels probably dug by soldiers with no other work returning from the Napoleonic Wars after 1812.



Extremely wealthy philanthropist Joseph Williamson decided to dig tunnels under parts of Liverpool to employ out of work soldiers for no other reasons than he had money and he could.

						Hidden historic gem A completely unique and wholly immersive experience. If you can go visit these tunnels then you definitely should, because wow! 						You must visit the Tunnels Great bunch of people, good banter ( we were in Liverpool after all) . The tour by Chris was very informative and for me one of the the measures of a good trip is that I learned something, which I did. Chris really knew his stuff, how to lead a tour and was  very safety conscious. Really good experience

						Going Underground in Liverpool My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm. 



Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging,  knowledgable and down to earth! 



The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago. 



All in all a great afternoon!
					
					Really interesting visit, worth seeing Fascinating to see these tunnels and all the artefacts found when clearing them out.  Also fascinating to hear about the very eccentric Joseph Williamson.

						Amazing tour, Stepping back in time I have walked past this so many times and never known it was there!  

Amazing tour with our guide Tom, so interesting learning all about the Williamson's Tunnels.  My mum and son came and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

					Unique experience We really enjoyed the tunnels and experience. This is run by enthusiastic volunteers so not a polished commercial experience. It was fascinating to go underground and see the huge tunnels and the artifacts. 



As a history buff I was a bit disappointed about there being no knowledge of why the tunnels were built. My first thought was smuggling. But when you see the size of the chamber and the multiple levels maybe smuggling doesn’t make sense as the tunnels would have been more basic for smuggling.

						Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. All the volunteers were friendly, polite and welcoming. I won’t say too much about the tour other than you need to go and have the experience . It’s fascinating! 					Great visit to Friends of Williamson Tunnels Having brought ex-scouser friends back to Liverpool for a couple of days I was not sure what they would make of the Williamson Tunnels friends site. They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. The very favourable impressions were augmented by the verve with which our guide, Mandy, explained everything from the layout to the articles found during excavation. 						Great visit to Friends of Williamson Tunnels Having brought ex-scouser friends back to Liverpool for a couple of days I was not sure what they would make of the Williamson Tunnels friends site. They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. The very favourable impressions were augmented by the verve with which our guide, Mandy, explained everything from the layout to the articles found during excavation. All in all a very enjoyable visit.
					
					Amazing! Totally intriguing and a real privilege to walk through the accessible tunnels. 						A great and memorable visit Great tour and very informative about what could be considered a hidden jewel in Liverpool. Shrouded in mystery and full of interesting information about the area and perhaps the reasons for Master Williamson to build these tunnels. The work done by the volunteers to save this important historical site is absolutely wonderful. I recommend anyone interested in local history and how folk lived around the Napoleanic wars and after, should not miss this tour when visiting Liverpool. 					Liverpools labyrinth The Williamson tunnels are an absolutely marvel of human engineering. A great tour showed off parts of the tunnels that run under Edge Hill in Liverpool. Well worth a visit. Run by a great team of volunteers that make it an exploration to remember.

						Liverpools labyrinth The Williamson tunnels are an absolutely marvel of human engineering. A great tour showed off parts of the tunnels that run under Edge Hill in Liverpool. Well worth a visit. Run by a great team of volunteers that make it an exploration to remember.
					
					What's lurking underground in Liverpool! We did'nt really know what to expect on our visit to the tunnels so we were both astounded when we were led underground! Our guide Mike had so much information to share with the group and he was happy to answer any questions.  I would highly recommend the tour to anyone, we don't come from Liverpool but if you do you should  visit here and learn what is lurking underground in your city!

						Terrific Tunnels! What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

					Very interesting and great value. We decided to take out a friends of the tunnels membership so we could do the extended tour of the house and we are very glad we did. It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. There are quite a few steps, which was fine for us, but worth mentioning for anyone who struggles with mobility.

Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.

The tunnels were filled in after Williamson's death, leaving the early explorers from the Friends of Williamson's Tunnels to discover many objects still intact in the rubbish; some are on display in the tunnels.

All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

					Highly recommended Having arrived promptly for our scheduled tour at the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre we were very disappointed to discover that our booking slot hadn't been registered despite e mail confirmation. We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. I've been on various Liverpool tours and I would rate this one amongst the best.
					
					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

						Informative tour I spent a fascinating few hours on a tour of the Paddington chambers and then Joseph Williamson's House. Tom is an enthusiastic and well informed guide. I'd been planning to visit for some time and delighted I finally got there. Well worth a visit.

I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. 						Great visit to Friends of Williamson Tunnels Another excellent tour by Mandy as was the case when I bought other friends last autumn. Again those with me say that the visit exceeded expectations and they enjoyed a lovely couple of hours.

						Fascinating experience I had long wanted to visit the tunnels so I decided to join  one of the tours as part of the Heritage Open Days. Our guide was Tom, who was very knowledgeable about the history of the tunnels. It was a fascinating experience into a lesser known part of Liverpool`s history.

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time.

						A very interesting alternative thing to do This is an entirely volunteer-led free tour that takes you down below the streets of Liverpool to a network of underground caverns. I don't want to spoil any more of the story, as the guide will tell you about the history but the volunteers have a lot of passion and dedication and it shows!
					
					Underground chambers in Edge Hill We booked this visit as a "something to do" before having a reunion lunch with more friends, and it was a great choice. Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

						Underground chambers in Edge Hill We booked this visit as a "something to do" before having a reunion lunch with more friends, and it was a great choice. Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging,  knowledgable and down to earth!

Mike was our tour guide and very knowledgeable and so enthusiastic, took us deep down to the Paddington Williamson tunnel site, let us explored together when and how to discover, protect this amazing heritage. 						This tour was a spectacular hidden gem of Liverpool. We had a tour with Phil, and he was an amazing guide. The tunnels were mind boggling. Everytime we entered  a new section, I was in more awe. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!

					It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. The free tour I attended lasts approximately 1.5 - 2 hours. You visit the tunnels, but in addition, our guide Peter shared lots of important facts and information about the site and its history. All the staff are very friendly, and the work they do to continue the recovery efforts in these tunnels is admirable. I definitely recommend it!!

					This tour has to be experienced to be believed. The deepest and most original site of the Williamson excavations with the massive banqueting hall deep enough for a whole house in itself. The many of the knowledgeable volunteers have been there since the tunnels original rediscovery and they have worked constantly over 30 plus dedicated years to open more of the tunnels, bucket at a time due to limited space, a truly impressive achievement that is a fitting tribute  to the original works of the man himself. A unique experience of a unique part of Liverpool history. This should be visited by everyone, I know I will be back again.

					What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. 						What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. Due to the size of the groups, it's a really intimate experience that allows you to ask all the questions you can think of. My guide, Chris, was so helpful and knowledgeable about the tunnels. I left knowing more and having seen some truly fantastic things! So grateful for the FoWT for running this and sharing their knwoledge and love of the tunnels.
