					A unique experience It was a place we had always wanted to visit and we weren’t disappointed. Clare our guide was amazing  her knowledge was extensive and her enthusiasm knew no bounds.

We learnt all about the philanthropist Joseph Williamson what a tremendous man, we went down to a labyrinth of tunnels, at different levels. The volunteers do a fantastic job keeping the tunnels open  amazingly not supported by Liverpool Council or the Heritage trust.

This is a project that must be supported by all to keep a unique asset for future generations ..thank you so much for our great day.

						Superb historical excavations What a brilliant experience guided by the very knowledgeable Tom. What he doesn't know about the tunnels and the history isn't worth knowing. We only experienced the Paddington excavation which is probably less than one tenth of the whole system. Will definitely be booking on the main tour. The amount of discarded artifacts from the Victorian era onwards was fascinating. Well done to all involved. We even discovered that my wife is related to William Boote, the grocer who occupied several of the Williamson buildings!

						Hidden Gem! Literally! What a fascinating visit!  This really is Liverpool's little hidden gem!  

(I'm at a loss why there is not more positive support and assistance).  This is a unique part of the city's history.  There is just so much more to be explored.  

Our guide Chris was both entertaining and informative.   His explanations really brought the history to life.

The final steps to the lowest level defeated me! However,  it was still possible to see and hear all about that area, from above.

Sturdy shoes a must!  And, don't wear your best clothes!!!!!

						Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! We ended up being the only people on the 12:30 tour, but our guide Tom still gave us a ‘private’ tour - he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate that the tour still went ahead.

						A ‘must see’ and a great lesson in social history. It was an excellent tour which we thoroughly enjoyed. 					Really interesting visit, worth seeing Fascinating to see these tunnels and all the artefacts found when clearing them out.  Also fascinating to hear about the very eccentric Joseph Williamson.

Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

					What an amazing place! A group of 24 of us went today. We were made very welcome. Our guides were enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. The whole place was fascinating. There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. Just bear in mind that you are going underground and there are steps and uneven surfaces. There are 2 separate sections to visit. We were there for atleast 2 and a half hours. There's also a little shop if you want to buy souvenirs.

We did the extended tour of the tunnels and really enjoyed our visit. The team have applied to English Heritage for a listing which will help them receive Local Authority permission to expand their area of excavation. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels enterprise is a charity with all the excavation work and ensuring  site safety  and visitors tours being done by local volunteers.. It relies on local donations from visitors to keep going. Hopefully they will be successful in attracting Lottery funding in the future.

Our small group all felt that our tour had opened their eyes not only about the work that the Friends continue to do , but also a rare insight  into a part of Livepools historical social history which is often overlooked. I cannot recommend visiting this place enough.

						Williamson tunnels tour I had a fantastic time visiting the Williamson tunnels. Tom our guide was a fountain of information and very friendly and welcoming.

					Great morning, a real alternative to traditional sites. This was such an interesting trip. Peter was our guide, bear in mind they are all volunteers, he was full of inormation, looked to answer all questions and was really engaging. Who knew what goes on beneath the streets?

						Great morning, a real alternative to traditional sites. This was such an interesting trip. Peter was our guide, bear in mind they are all volunteers, he was full of inormation, looked to answer all questions and was really engaging. Who knew what goes on beneath the streets?
					
					Unique experience We really enjoyed the tunnels and experience. This is run by enthusiastic volunteers so not a polished commercial experience. It was fascinating to go underground and see the huge tunnels and the artifacts.

My wife and I both live in Liverpool, and now we are retired we have more time to visit our city and a visit to Williamson tunnels was always on our list. We are so glad we have done it now. My only disappointment is that such a wonderful treasure in our city is not funded by the council or some sort of trust. It is all down to donations. My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.



The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool. 



Tours are free, but you can leave a donation at the end.

We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. 						Fascinating experience I had long wanted to visit the tunnels so I decided to join  one of the tours as part of the Heritage Open Days. Our guide was Tom, who was very knowledgeable about the history of the tunnels. It was a fascinating experience into a lesser known part of Liverpool`s history.

					Highly recommended Having arrived promptly for our scheduled tour at the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre we were very disappointed to discover that our booking slot hadn't been registered despite e mail confirmation. We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. 						Highly recommended Having arrived promptly for our scheduled tour at the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre we were very disappointed to discover that our booking slot hadn't been registered despite e mail confirmation. We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. 						Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. All the volunteers were friendly, polite and welcoming. I won’t say too much about the tour other than you need to go and have the experience . It’s fascinating! The Victorian relics found on the site during the digs are on display and it is so interesting to see daily household items from that era and piece together a picture of what life was like in Liverpool during that time. The tunnels themselves are vast and the depth of them is just incomprehensible, especially when the intention behind them remains unknown! 					A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.

					FOWT As part of our 50th anniversary weekend we decided to visit FOWT. From the first inquiry Mike arranged to fit us into a very busy schedule. As soon as you go underground and see the original site photos and start to hear the history of the dig you understand the massive task and achievement so far.  The tunnels are fascinating layer after layer and the array of the many items found during the dig are quite incredible and displayed beautifully .  Many of the items make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. 						FOWT As part of our 50th anniversary weekend we decided to visit FOWT. From the first inquiry Mike arranged to fit us into a very busy schedule. As soon as you go underground and see the original site photos and start to hear the history of the dig you understand the massive task and achievement so far.  The tunnels are fascinating layer after layer and the array of the many items found during the dig are quite incredible and displayed beautifully .  Many of the items make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. As we entered one chamber Mike asked if anyone would like to sing to appreciate the acoustics, my husband being a Liverpool fan sang you’ll never walk alone, what a memorable experience to take away with us. 						Possibly the most jaw dropping oldest and weirdest sight or attraction you'll ever see in Liverpool, the guys here dig all these tunnels out at weekends volunteers all, they've won all kinds of awards now and rightly so, fantastic insight into old Liverpool if you only visit one place in the city make sure this is it.
					
					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. 					I enjoyed an absolutely amazing time with my fellow walkers of the St Helens Group RA when we went on an guided tour of 'Williamson Tunnels' by the 'Friends Of Williamson Tunnels' on Sunday. It was very interesting, and I will definitely go again to see how much more the volunteers have uncovered as they continue with the exploration digging they're doing, and definitely recommend anyone to go and visit and witness the remarkable sites of both the Tunnels, and remains of the former Mansion House of Williamson themselves. :)

Such a fantastic and unique experience!
					
					This tour has to be experienced to be believed. The deepest and most original site of the Williamson excavations with the massive banqueting hall deep enough for a whole house in itself. The many of the knowledgeable volunteers have been there since the tunnels original rediscovery and they have worked constantly over 30 plus dedicated years to open more of the tunnels, bucket at a time due to limited space, a truly impressive achievement that is a fitting tribute  to the original works of the man himself. A unique experience of a unique part of Liverpool history. This should be visited by everyone, I know I will be back again.

						Wow! After having a brilliant tour with Clare around the house site,  we came back a few days later to visit the Paddington site,  this time with Chris. Both guides were very knowledgeable and both sites are well worth a visit. Its amazing the work put into making these tunnels accessible, so well done to all the volunteers! Well worth a visit if you are in Liverpool!
					
					We had a lovely time at the tunnels today. Tom was very informative, friendly and encouraging to explore the little rooms there was.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

						We had a lovely time at the tunnels today. Tom was very informative, friendly and encouraging to explore the little rooms there was.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

					It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. 					Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.
