					Recommended I was there with two friends of mine. Really nice experience. Our guide was Clare, who is really passionate and prepared on Williamson's story. It was an experience different from the usual touristic spots.

						A worthwhile trip when in Liverpool! After our 30 min walk to the Williamson Tunnels (from the central) at first we thought ‘what lies beneath here?’. Well, a lot of history and facts! Tom, our guide, was very passionate and great at story telling. Friendly and welcoming, any questions asked were answered! Would recommend!
					
					Great tour full of information A friend booked for a group of us to do this, we are all locals but knew very little about the tunnels except that they existed. Turned up not knowing what to expect but the staff were all so friendly and lovely, full of knowledge and you can tell its a passion of theirs. Our guide Tom was great and gave us so much information and had a laugh with us. After the tour we went back to the unit and collected our things from the lockers and gave our high vis and hard hats back, will 100% be back with family members. Would recommend to anyone who wants to do something different in our city.

						One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. Firstly we were welcomed by the volunteer guides and offered tea/coffee and biscuits. Everyone was friendly. The tour was amazing and our guide spent time answering all our questions. We were given loads of time to see everything. I would highly recommend that visitors become members and book the full tour. I've been on various Liverpool tours and I would rate this one amongst the best.

					Wonderful What a thoroughly enjoyable tou. Very interesting to hear of the history of The Williamson tunnels and actually experience the tunnels. This painted a vivid picture and to see all the artifact's that were recovered was like a walk in a Victorian rubbish dump. Incredible to see what people collected and disposed of. 						100% recommend I wholeheartedly recommend this experience. It will be unforgettable. With the help of Tony and Laura I saw Liverpool in a different way. From my point of view it was a 100% experience.  Words cannot fully describe this experience, until you see it with your own eyes and enjoy it.

It was a very interesting visit, and we can certainly recommend.

Tom was our guide, who explained very thoroughly about the tunnels.

It’s a free tour lasting a good two hours, but we felt it was worth a generous donation at the end .

It was very interesting to hear the tales about how the rubble was removed from the tunnels and look at the many artefacts that had been unearthed. 					Fantastic experience What an amazing time we had visiting the tunnels. 

I visited with my 7 year old son, we got a taxi from the city centre that dropped us outside. We were shocked to see a standard detached row of houses lining one side of the road. We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

Due to the size of the groups, it's a really intimate experience that allows you to ask all the questions you can think of. My guide, Chris, was so helpful and knowledgeable about the tunnels. 						Like walking back in time. Excellent experience, Mike was a great guide, extremely knowledgeable and the visit was fascinating. The work the Friends of Williamson Tunnel have done is quite staggering. The tunnels are amazing as are the artefacts found in them. 

The singing in the cathedral chamber was something we will never forget.

We ended up being the only people on the 12:30 tour, but our guide Tom still gave us a ‘private’ tour - he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate that the tour still went ahead.

I will probably return again in a couple of years, and see if any new evidence or tunnels have been found by then!

					Great and informative City History. Amazing trip today with 14 members of the Boys Brigade from within the Liverpool Battalion.

It’s amazing when you find out so much more than you knew about our own city.

Tour was well run with informative guides and are a credit to what should be a Listed Site of Major Historical Importance.

Should be better funded so that the volunteers can do more exploration and add to the wealth of history they have already discovered.

						Great and informative City History. Amazing trip today with 14 members of the Boys Brigade from within the Liverpool Battalion.

It’s amazing when you find out so much more than you knew about our own city.

Tour was well run with informative guides and are a credit to what should be a Listed Site of Major Historical Importance.

Should be better funded so that the volunteers can do more exploration and add to the wealth of history they have already discovered.

					An amazing experience This tour is amazing and takes you deep into the tunnels below. It is a real experience and provides you with an insight into the history of the tunnels. Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. 						An amazing experience This tour is amazing and takes you deep into the tunnels below. It is a real experience and provides you with an insight into the history of the tunnels. Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. Tom , our quite provided a full explanation about them and the ‘exploring’ was very interesting. No charge but a donation is gladly accepted and well worth it

We did the extended tour of the tunnels and really enjoyed our visit. The team have applied to English Heritage for a listing which will help them receive Local Authority permission to expand their area of excavation. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels enterprise is a charity with all the excavation work and ensuring  site safety  and visitors tours being done by local volunteers.. It relies on local donations from visitors to keep going. Hopefully they will be successful in attracting Lottery funding in the future. 



I strongly recommend a visit to see the great work the team are doing.

					Interesting history underneath Edge Hill Really enjoyed the tour with Tom! You could tell his passion and enthusiasm for the history (and mystery) of the Williamson "tunnels". 						Interesting history underneath Edge Hill Really enjoyed the tour with Tom! You could tell his passion and enthusiasm for the history (and mystery) of the Williamson "tunnels". I also enjoyed that it was a small tour group which made it easy to see/hear. My gosh she was so knowledgeable and fun, throwing in lots of little stories about the tunnels but also snippets of historical information on Liverpool itself. When you drive in, it looks like there isn't anything there, so it's quite a shock once you go underground. What a feat of engineering and vision. Highly recommend the tour and can only hope that the Heritage Centre can get saved. Too many sites in the city have been dismissed by city Councils. We have an amazing history and it should all be celebrated, including Mr Williamson.

						Amazing Williamson Tunnels What a great trip. Truly fascinating site with a mix of history and engineering. Our guide Mike was very informative and there were kids on the tour and they found it interesting too. 



Made you want to pick up a spade and start digging!
					
					Highly recommended!! Wow what an amazing experience  we had at FOIWT.. My son and I visited and are already planning  to visit again soon.

Our tour was wonderful, Clare our guide was very warm and informative the whole  time, making this a perfect trip for us !!

					Well Worth A Visit If you are ever in Liverpool, you should really try to visit this amazing attraction.   The tunnels themselves are breath taking, with a remarkable history.   

However, I really need to praise the volunteers running the tours.  They were so friendly and welcoming.   Unlike many commercial attractions, we were not hurried and made to feel at home instantly.  Clare our guide was fantastic, she was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, we were in awe.   She really did go out of her way to make our tour feel special.

						Well Worth A Visit If you are ever in Liverpool, you should really try to visit this amazing attraction.   The tunnels themselves are breath taking, with a remarkable history.   

However, I really need to praise the volunteers running the tours.  They were so friendly and welcoming.   Unlike many commercial attractions, we were not hurried and made to feel at home instantly.  Clare our guide was fantastic, she was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, we were in awe.   She really did go out of her way to make our tour feel special.
					
					So interesting! So fascinating! Four floors underground that no one knew existed. The artifacts recovered are unique and really interesting.

					An intriguing Liverpool city centre historical oddity for the adventurous visitor I had a long visit with an expert guide (shorter ones are available) and I found it a most exciting and absolutely fascinating glimpse of somewhere which is highly unusual and remains a bit of an enigma. I came all the way from London for the day to visit it, and felt that it was well worth the journey.



But it may not suit everyone. This is not the sort of attraction with silken ropes, interactive video, fridge magnets and 5 star loos. It is work in progress, a visit to a spectacular archaeological dig, in a quiet back street near the city centre, manned by enthusiasts, and where you may get mud on your clothes. There were lots of stairs. I was kitted out with hard hat and high viz.



I think it deserves bus loads of visitors, but it does not get them, apparently because it is rather offbeat and not everyone appreciates dank holes in the ground. I would highly recommend the tour to anyone, we don't come from Liverpool but if you do you should  visit here and learn what is lurking underground in your city!

We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.

						Liverpools labyrinth The Williamson tunnels are an absolutely marvel of human engineering. A great tour showed off parts of the tunnels that run under Edge Hill in Liverpool. Well worth a visit. Run by a great team of volunteers that make it an exploration to remember.
					
					FOWT As part of our 50th anniversary weekend we decided to visit FOWT. From the first inquiry Mike arranged to fit us into a very busy schedule. As soon as you go underground and see the original site photos and start to hear the history of the dig you understand the massive task and achievement so far.  The tunnels are fascinating layer after layer and the array of the many items found during the dig are quite incredible and displayed beautifully .  Many of the items make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. As we entered one chamber Mike asked if anyone would like to sing to appreciate the acoustics, my husband being a Liverpool fan sang you’ll never walk alone, what a memorable experience to take away with us.  Mikes knowledge and passion for the site made our trip even more enjoyable but as he said the more answers you look for the more questions arise.  Best wishes to Mike and all FOWT for future digs and possibly some answers.  I would highly recommend a visit whether you are a tourist or like us from Liverpool to discover some of the secrets of our wonderful city.

						Must see attraction Such a fantastic visit - Tony the guide was wonderful and so knowledgeable. Many friendly volunteers who do a cracking job and you can help yourself to tea and coffee etc beforehand if you arrive early. So much to learn and a must see in Liverpool.

						🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Not to be missed Gem of an experience and one not to be missed. Mike was a fantastic Guide and had been involved with FOWT for many years involved in the clearances which enabled him to share many anecdotes which further illuminated the fascinating history of the project. 

Williamson was a fascinating character and I look forward to returning and touring more of the tunnels. 

It’s surprising the City Council & Universities aren’t more actively involved in this incredible excavation project and discovering more about the social and economic history of the local community

						Possibly the most jaw dropping oldest and weirdest sight or attraction you'll ever see in Liverpool, the guys here dig all these tunnels out at weekends volunteers all, they've won all kinds of awards now and rightly so, fantastic insight into old Liverpool if you only visit one place in the city make sure this is it.

						What a wonderful place to visit. The volunteers couldn't have done enough for us. They were wonderfully patient with all the questions our children had for them. The Tunnles themselves were simply amazing, they have clearly worked tirelessly to bring them back to life. I couldn't recommend a visit enough.
					
					Wow! After having a brilliant tour with Clare around the house site,  we came back a few days later to visit the Paddington site,  this time with Chris. 						Wow! After having a brilliant tour with Clare around the house site,  we came back a few days later to visit the Paddington site,  this time with Chris. Both guides were very knowledgeable and both sites are well worth a visit. Its amazing the work put into making these tunnels accessible, so well done to all the volunteers! Well worth a visit if you are in Liverpool!

						My friend and I went to look around ‘the tunnels’, Tom was our fantastic guide. His knowledge and story telling explained how the tunnel were found and explored. I already knew a little about the tunnels, so it was brilliant to talk with Tom and rid myself of some of the misconceptions I had. The fact that they weren’t tunnels, but quarries. 						We visited the Paddington underground area albeit it's vaulted and resembles a tunnel, Tony informed us that it is technically a quarry. Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

A fascinating tour led by one of the volunteers who have spent many years clearing debris by hand from the tunnels. The history of Williamson, his tunnels and his workforce is mostly a mystery and makes for some debate about the motives, philanthropy and nature of the endeavours. We had such an interesting visit. 					Definitely worth a visit. Mike was able to accommodate me on a last minute whim, for which I am very thankful (and had the best company/singing!)

					I enjoyed an absolutely amazing time with my fellow walkers of the St Helens Group RA when we went on an guided tour of 'Williamson Tunnels' by the 'Friends Of Williamson Tunnels' on Sunday. 						I enjoyed an absolutely amazing time with my fellow walkers of the St Helens Group RA when we went on an guided tour of 'Williamson Tunnels' by the 'Friends Of Williamson Tunnels' on Sunday. Due to the size of the groups, it's a really intimate experience that allows you to ask all the questions you can think of. My guide, Chris, was so helpful and knowledgeable about the tunnels. 					Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? To be honest I expected more to be excavated than is actually the case because of the rave reviews, though the amount of Earth removed is no less impressive & the lack of progress isn’t the fault of the FoWT. Red tape is holding them up apparently. Best to see this as a work in progress. When more is excavated, no doubt the tunnels will become even more impressive.

					We had a lovely time at the tunnels today. Tom was very informative, friendly and encouraging to explore the little rooms there was.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

An impressive archaeological and architectural site created by unskilled workers using basic tunnelling/quarrying tools - they had no access to modern machinery. Enter a world of smallish tunnels and cathedral sized caverns. Our guides, Tony and Tom, are enthusiastic and are eager to impart as much of their knowledge to you as possible and are ably assisted by Laura in reception. Remember to give as generous a donation as possible to help them to continue with their work of excavating more areas of the site.
					
					Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.

					I visited over the weekend as I have passed the signs for many years, but had no idea what the tunnels were. It was fascinating to see the tunnels and hear the theories of why they were built. 						I visited over the weekend as I have passed the signs for many years, but had no idea what the tunnels were. It was fascinating to see the tunnels and hear the theories of why they were built. Tony was really knowledgeable and made the hour-and-a-half tour fly by. I will certainly be recommending this to friends.
