					A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.

The tunnels were filled in after Williamson's death, leaving the early explorers from the Friends of Williamson's Tunnels to discover many objects still intact in the rubbish; some are on display in the tunnels.

All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

						Going Underground in Liverpool My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm. 



Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging,  knowledgable and down to earth! 



The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

						Fascinating experience I had long wanted to visit the tunnels so I decided to join  one of the tours as part of the Heritage Open Days. Our guide was Tom, who was very knowledgeable about the history of the tunnels. It was a fascinating experience into a lesser known part of Liverpool`s history.
					
					Amazing tour with the friendliest of tour guides! Thank you all for such an amazing day out Went today with a group of friends, it was an impromptu trip out, we're all local to the area and to find such a hidden gem so close to home is unbelievable , our tour Guide Tom was very thorough and really give us a great experience of the tunnels! I will 100% be back and sharing the experience with other friends and family as this is just such a good day out and the people doing the tours are all so friendly and welcoming.

Our guide Mike was super friendly & knowledgeable, and very patient waiting for my mum to traverse the many steps! Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Liverpool. 					Terrific Tunnels! What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. 						Terrific Tunnels! What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. Due to the size of the groups, it's a really intimate experience that allows you to ask all the questions you can think of. My guide, Chris, was so helpful and knowledgeable about the tunnels. I left knowing more and having seen some truly fantastic things! So grateful for the FoWT for running this and sharing their knwoledge and love of the tunnels.

						One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. Firstly we were welcomed by the volunteer guides and offered tea/coffee and biscuits. Everyone was friendly. The tour was amazing and our guide spent time answering all our questions. We had a great guide in Richard who was enthusiastic and brought to life the story of this mysterious network of tunnels and the man who’d created them. This is a hidden gem and deserves to be shouted about.

There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. 						Excellent experience, would highly recommend We visited with my 2 young sons (5 & 12 years old) along with my elderly father, we all had a wonderful time and the tour was expertly delivered by our guide Mike. The size and depth of the site is breathtaking and the amount of work undertaken by the team to excavate the site difficult to comprehend. I would highly recommend the tour to all ages, we enjoyed it so much we have become members

						Wonderful visit. Recently visited the tunnels with a group of friends and received a warm welcome from our guides Mandy and Clare who throughout our visit, were very knowledgable, and patient and all delivered with a great sense of humour. Our small group all felt that our tour had opened their eyes not only about the work that the Friends continue to do , but also a rare insight  into a part of Livepools historical social history which is often overlooked. I cannot recommend visiting this place enough.
					
					Highly recommended Having arrived promptly for our scheduled tour at the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre we were very disappointed to discover that our booking slot hadn't been registered despite e mail confirmation. We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. Massive thanks to to Mike and the team.

					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

						Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

We came back to visit Williamson’s Tunnels in Liverpool after our last trip over 15 years ago, when we were lowered down into the tunnels in a harness on a block and tackle from above, feeling a bit like “a puppet on a string”  



This time we booked a tour and returned with some friends. As it turned out, it was just us, our friends, and Mandy, our tour guide. What a bonus that was! Mandy was absolutely brilliant—friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and great fun throughout. She really helped make the whole experience special.



We also met the rest of the team above ground and had a laugh about how much things had changed since our last visit. The work that has been done is fantastic.



Every corner seems to reveal another treasure, and the whole place is fascinating. There is so much to see and learn that the time just flew by. In fact, at one point we even ended up singing “When I’m Calling You” in one of the lower caverns to experience the acoustics!



Britain’s Got Talent, here we come  although it would definitely have to be filmed in Williamson’s Tunnels for the full effect! 



All joking aside, this was one of the best days out we’ve had in ages. A huge thank you to Mandy and everyone involved in preserving and sharing this remarkable piece of Liverpool’s history. We had an absolute ball and can’t wait to come back again.

Our guide Chris was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic.  He didn't reveal all the information at first and that made it all the more intriguing. Absolutely fascinating tour. The volunteers are to be commended for their work and commitment. Will definitely visit again to see more.

It’s a fascinating look back in time to a really interesting & eccentric local philanthropist, the King of Edge Hill,  Joseph Williamson.

We loved seeing the tunnels themselves, the remains of his home and all the little pieces of life back then that had been left behind and later uncovered. 

Our guide Claire was amazing, interesting and engaging as well as absolutely lovely. We had a blast, we will be back another time for sure. We left with more questions than answers!

The tunnels are such a mysterious event beneath Liverpool and Mike is a great tour guide in explaining so much history to them. So thankful for answering all my questions, too! Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. All the volunteers were friendly, polite and welcoming. I won’t say too much about the tour other than you need to go and have the experience . It’s fascinating! 					Brilliant Experience What a fantastic thing to experience! I've lived near Liverpool for nearly 30 years, and never knew there was something like this lying below the city. Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.



The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool. 



Tours are free, but you can leave a donation at the end. 



It's best to book as far in advance as is possible, especially during summer peak season.

Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. I visited with my 7 year old son, we got a taxi from the city centre that dropped us outside. We were shocked to see a standard detached row of houses lining one side of the road. We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

						Fantastic experience What an amazing time we had visiting the tunnels. 

I visited with my 7 year old son, we got a taxi from the city centre that dropped us outside. We were shocked to see a standard detached row of houses lining one side of the road. We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. 					An engineering marvel I’m not sure any written review will ever do justice to the experience of actually setting foot in the Williamson tunnels. From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. My wife and I both live in Liverpool, and now we are retired we have more time to visit our city and a visit to Williamson tunnels was always on our list. We are so glad we have done it now. My only disappointment is that such a wonderful treasure in our city is not funded by the council or some sort of trust. It is all down to donations. Mandy passed on her local knowledge of the area and the tunnels making the trip even more enjoyable.

					My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm.



Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging,  knowledgable and down to earth!



The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

The underground spaces themselves have been painstakingly emptied of the spoil that had filled them, and have been restored to their as built condition.  The collection of items that have been removed from the tunnels when they were used as a dumping ground provides some interesting snapshots of Britain over the decades.  The FoWT aim to find the other tunnels & underground spaces and restore them to how they were originally built - you really do get the impression that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

						Wow! After having a brilliant tour with Clare around the house site,  we came back a few days later to visit the Paddington site,  this time with Chris. Both guides were very knowledgeable and both sites are well worth a visit. Its amazing the work put into making these tunnels accessible, so well done to all the volunteers! Well worth a visit if you are in Liverpool!
					
					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. 					Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.

					If you come to visit Liverpool or you already live here this activity is a must you should experience at least once. The history behind the tunnels it’s unbelievable and the people that form the Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels are one of the kindest and lovely people I’ve ever seen. They’ll explain with incredible detail the history and go through all the different chambers and tunnels Williamson built. Overall an amazing experience to learn a bit more of Liverool’s history.

						If you come to visit Liverpool or you already live here this activity is a must you should experience at least once. The history behind the tunnels it’s unbelievable and the people that form the Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels are one of the kindest and lovely people I’ve ever seen. They’ll explain with incredible detail the history and go through all the different chambers and tunnels Williamson built. Overall an amazing experience to learn a bit more of Liverool’s history.

						Having brought ex-scouser friends back to Liverpool for a couple of days I was not sure what they would make of the Williamson Tunnels friends site. They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. The very favourable impressions were augmented by the verve with which our guide, Mandy, explained everything from the layout to the articles found during excavation. All in all a very enjoyable visit.

Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. He told us all about how the excavation of Williamson's Tunnels came about and there is clearly a team of very dedicated volunteers who have uncovered the unique history of the tunnels. The many fascinating artefacts were a highlight of the tour andthis is a must-do when in Liverpool.
					
					Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? To be honest I expected more to be excavated than is actually the case because of the rave reviews, though the amount of Earth removed is no less impressive & the lack of progress isn’t the fault of the FoWT. Red tape is holding them up apparently. Best to see this as a work in progress. When more is excavated, no doubt the tunnels will become even more impressive.

					We had a lovely time at the tunnels today. Tom was very informative, friendly and encouraging to explore the little rooms there was.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

					WHAT LIES UNDERNEATH.  A must do experience for locals and visitors alike. An impressive archaeological and architectural site created by unskilled workers using basic tunnelling/quarrying tools - they had no access to modern machinery. Enter a world of smallish tunnels and cathedral sized caverns. 						WHAT LIES UNDERNEATH.  A must do experience for locals and visitors alike. An impressive archaeological and architectural site created by unskilled workers using basic tunnelling/quarrying tools - they had no access to modern machinery. Enter a world of smallish tunnels and cathedral sized caverns. Our guides, Tony and Tom, are enthusiastic and are eager to impart as much of their knowledge to you as possible and are ably assisted by Laura in reception. 					Great tour of the Williamson Tunnels with Phil. Really cool experience and a great way to see a different side of Liverpool’s history. The tunnels are completely run and looked after by volunteers, which makes it even more impressive that they’re able to keep the place alive and running.



There’s so much history packed into the tunnels and it’s something that’s really easily accessible right in the heart of Liverpool. Phil was really knowledgeable and made the tour interesting throughout.

Our great guide Mike was very knowledgeable and gave us the history not only of the tunnels origin but the rediscovery of them with first hand knowledge. All of the volunteers to were very kind and I am very thankful for their time and would highly recommend visiting the Williamson tunnels!
