					It’s free of charge but you’ll be happy to pay once you see it! Mike gave us a tour today of both the Paddington site and Joseph Williamson’s house site and both were absolutely brilliant. The Victorian relics found on the site during the digs are on display and it is so interesting to see daily household items from that era and piece together a picture of what life was like in Liverpool during that time. The tunnels themselves are vast and the depth of them is just incomprehensible, especially when the intention behind them remains unknown! I’ve lived in Liverpool all my life and I knew the tunnels existed but I never knew the full extent of them (and I still don’t as Mike explained that there is so much more to be discovered!) I really really 100% recommend that everyone does this tour. Hopefully the council sees sense and provides the necessary lease and the digging can continue because it would be such a shame if this amount of history was to be lost!

The Victorian relics found on the site during the digs are on display and it is so interesting to see daily household items from that era and piece together a picture of what life was like in Liverpool during that time. 						Fascinating slice of subterranean history Really fantastic experience - so interesting and unexpected. Our guide Mike was super friendly & knowledgeable, and very patient waiting for my mum to traverse the many steps! Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Liverpool. I hope the council gives them to permission to excavate more tunnels soon!

						A super visit-again. Decided to suprise my brother in law with a visit to to see the tunnels. He visits from derbyshire, and loves Liverpool, as their is always something to see and do.

So having visited in Feb, we knew this would be right up his street. Our small group all felt that our tour had opened their eyes not only about the work that the Friends continue to do , but also a rare insight  into a part of Livepools historical social history which is often overlooked. 						Wonderful visit. Recently visited the tunnels with a group of friends and received a warm welcome from our guides Mandy and Clare who throughout our visit, were very knowledgable, and patient and all delivered with a great sense of humour. Our small group all felt that our tour had opened their eyes not only about the work that the Friends continue to do , but also a rare insight  into a part of Livepools historical social history which is often overlooked. I cannot recommend visiting this place enough.
					
					Fascinating!! A unique and wonderful experience, I don't think that there is anything quite like it in the whole country. Can't wait to return in a few years time to see how this fascinating project has progressed in the meantime. Thoroughly recommended.

					Fantastic FREE Experience packed with facts from a knowledgeable volunteer A fabulous 1.5 hour experience. Packed with information and local history. A group of 12 of us visited to explore the subterranean architectural spaces. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels organised a bespoke tour for us across 2 different sites. We looked at the banqueting hall and the cathedral like 4 story deep quarry spaces. Our tour guide was Tom, and he was so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the history and the rediscovery of the tunnels (being one of the volunteers that helped to unearth the spaces for the public) 



This would be great for anyone local and visitors to the city who want a truly Liverpool Experience.  Its damp down there and there are staircases to descend, (so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and check accessibility requirements) but this all adds to the experience!

						Walk in the footsteps of the Mole of Edge Hill Who would have thought we would discover such a labyrinth of tunnels under the streets of Liverpool courtesy of the Friends of Williamsons Tunnels?  What the volunteers have done to discover and uncover this magical place is remarkable.  Our small group was guided through the tunnels by our friendly and knowledgeable guide Mike who coincidentally was who I had email contact with to arrange our tour.  The response to my enquiry was speedy and we were all set to go.  We continued on to an extended tour and we spent several interesting hours in total exploring the work of Mr Williamson.  I would highly recommend visiting the tunnels for a unique experience you won’t forget.

						Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. All the volunteers were friendly, polite and welcoming. I won’t say too much about the tour other than you need to go and have the experience . It’s fascinating! Thank you Mike for a fantastic experience!!!!

						An excellent place to spend some time learning about one of Liverpools hidden gems. This is one of Liverpools hidden gems. 						Well worth the visit We were recommended this tour by friends who had done it, and it didn’t disappoint. We had a great guide in Richard who was enthusiastic and brought to life the story of this mysterious network of tunnels and the man who’d created them. This is a hidden gem and deserves to be shouted about.
					
					We are part of a social group and we attended the Williamson tunnels as part of a group outing.

						We are part of a social group and we attended the Williamson tunnels as part of a group outing.

We would really recommend this tour as a fascinating and interesting tour to look into Liverpools past history.

We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.

					Brilliant Experience What a fantastic thing to experience! I've lived near Liverpool for nearly 30 years, and never knew there was something like this lying below the city. Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.



The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool. 



Tours are free, but you can leave a donation at the end. 



It's best to book as far in advance as is possible, especially during summer peak season.

						Brilliant Experience What a fantastic thing to experience! I've lived near Liverpool for nearly 30 years, and never knew there was something like this lying below the city. Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). 						Interesting Group of four of us made the short journey from Warrington to view this interesting anomaly. Made to feel welcome by the enthusiastic staff. Mandy our guide was very knowledgable and gave an excellent tour. A lot of hard work gone into presenting the site as it is today , well done to all the volunteers. Just a shame that there is so much more underground in this area that we may never be able to see.

We learnt all about the philanthropist Joseph Williamson what a tremendous man, we went down to a labyrinth of tunnels, at different levels. The volunteers do a fantastic job keeping the tunnels open  amazingly not supported by Liverpool Council or the Heritage trust.

						Bringing local history to life and exploring an underworld it's hard to believe exists What an amazing experience. Clare was our brilliant, informative guide who blended the serious with the hilarious. Incredible to think what lies beneath the streets of Liverpool that most people never see. Highly recommended.
					
					Day out with a difference If possible do the extended tour that includes the remains of the house and the famous “banqueting hall”. The tour guides are friendly and knowledgable about the sites, many of them being the very people who did the recovery excavations. The tour involved ladders, stairs and some uneven floors but nothing to steep or difficult. For an incredibly modest fee you get an insight into a mysterious corner of Liverpool and the fascinating if eccentric Joseph Williamson. In the future I hope the City Council will support the “Friends” and ensure another piece of the city’s isn’t lost to development.

The tour guides are friendly and knowledgable about the sites, many of them being the very people who did the recovery excavations. The tour involved ladders, stairs and some uneven floors but nothing to steep or difficult. For an incredibly modest fee you get an insight into a mysterious corner of Liverpool and the fascinating if eccentric Joseph Williamson. In the future I hope the City Council will support the “Friends” and ensure another piece of the city’s isn’t lost to development.

The site is well lit, with good attention to safety. The occasional areas of uneven floor were well-advertised and the steps and stairs were all very safe & secure. Great fun and I learnt lots about earlier Liverpool

					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

					One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. Firstly we were welcomed by the volunteer guides and offered tea/coffee and biscuits. Everyone was friendly. The tour was amazing and our guide spent time answering all our questions. There were 7 of us in the tour group, our tour guide was a lady called Mandy who was very helpful and knowledgeable, took her time to fully explain things, and to point different things out to the group on our walk around.

						Hidden historic gem A completely unique and wholly immersive experience. If you can go visit these tunnels then you definitely should, because wow! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! Mandy was absolutely brilliant—friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and great fun throughout. She really helped make the whole experience special.



We also met the rest of the team above ground and had a laugh about how much things had changed since our last visit. The work that has been done is fantastic.



Every corner seems to reveal another treasure, and the whole place is fascinating. There is so much to see and learn that the time just flew by. In fact, at one point we even ended up singing “When I’m Calling You” in one of the lower caverns to experience the acoustics!



Britain’s Got Talent, here we come  although it would definitely have to be filmed in Williamson’s Tunnels for the full effect! 



All joking aside, this was one of the best days out we’ve had in ages. A huge thank you to Mandy and everyone involved in preserving and sharing this remarkable piece of Liverpool’s history. We had an absolute ball and can’t wait to come back again.

You could easily see that everyone is very proud of this place and it’s just lovely to see. The Volunteers are just fantastic and so welcoming. 					Amazing experience We went on a tour of the Williamson tunnels today and it was absolutely amazing. There was only the 2 of us with our tour guide, Tom, and he was so friendly and really informative, he really knew his stuff!

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

I wish they were given the permissions and also funding needed for them to carry on the amazing work they are doing.

						Amazing experience We went on a tour of the Williamson tunnels today and it was absolutely amazing. There was only the 2 of us with our tour guide, Tom, and he was so friendly and really informative, he really knew his stuff!

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

I wish they were given the permissions and also funding needed for them to carry on the amazing work they are doing.

Thankyou so much again to Tom for such a brilliant day.

						Best tour we took all weekend! Tom and Claire were super informative and very friendly hosts. They gave you adequate time to ask questions, explore and take pictures. I’d highly recommend anyone to book, whether you’re local or from outside Liverpool. Some of Liverpools lost history that has been pieced together over time and the quarry itself - wow! They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. 					Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.

					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

						This tour was a spectacular hidden gem of Liverpool. We had a tour with Phil, and he was an amazing guide. The tunnels were mind boggling. Everytime we entered  a new section, I was in more awe. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!

					Fascinating facts about Joseph Williamson and his tunnels.  Tunnels and more tunnels, amazingly well preserved along with other artifacts.



Our guide was Eric, extremely informative and gave us plenty of opportunities to take photos and ask questions.

Our guide was Eric, extremely informative and gave us plenty of opportunities to take photos and ask questions.

					We had a lovely time at the tunnels today. Tom was very informative, friendly and encouraging to explore the little rooms there was.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

A fascinating tour led by one of the volunteers who have spent many years clearing debris by hand from the tunnels. The history of Williamson, his tunnels and his workforce is mostly a mystery and makes for some debate about the motives, philanthropy and nature of the endeavours. We had such an interesting visit. At first glance you may think what is this place as on the surface it may not seem too attractive, but the magic of the experience is to be found underground.
