					A fascinating view into old Liverpool Our tour of the tunnels was expertly guided by Chris. It was very interesting to hear the tales about how the rubble was removed from the tunnels and look at the many artefacts that had been unearthed. Chris did well picking out interesting articles such as the Edward 7th commemorative china cup. Overall 2 hours well spent.

						A fascinating view into old Liverpool Our tour of the tunnels was expertly guided by Chris. It was very interesting to hear the tales about how the rubble was removed from the tunnels and look at the many artefacts that had been unearthed. Chris did well picking out interesting articles such as the Edward 7th commemorative china cup. Overall 2 hours well spent.

					FOWT As part of our 50th anniversary weekend we decided to visit FOWT. From the first inquiry Mike arranged to fit us into a very busy schedule. As soon as you go underground and see the original site photos and start to hear the history of the dig you understand the massive task and achievement so far.  The tunnels are fascinating layer after layer and the array of the many items found during the dig are quite incredible and displayed beautifully .  Many of the items make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. As we entered one chamber Mike asked if anyone would like to sing to appreciate the acoustics, my husband being a Liverpool fan sang you’ll never walk alone, what a memorable experience to take away with us.  Mikes knowledge and passion for the site made our trip even more enjoyable but as he said the more answers you look for the more questions arise.  Best wishes to Mike and all FOWT for future digs and possibly some answers.  I would highly recommend a visit whether you are a tourist or like us from Liverpool to discover some of the secrets of our wonderful city.

						FOWT As part of our 50th anniversary weekend we decided to visit FOWT. From the first inquiry Mike arranged to fit us into a very busy schedule. As soon as you go underground and see the original site photos and start to hear the history of the dig you understand the massive task and achievement so far.  The tunnels are fascinating layer after layer and the array of the many items found during the dig are quite incredible and displayed beautifully .  Many of the items make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. As we entered one chamber Mike asked if anyone would like to sing to appreciate the acoustics, my husband being a Liverpool fan sang you’ll never walk alone, what a memorable experience to take away with us.  Mikes knowledge and passion for the site made our trip even more enjoyable but as he said the more answers you look for the more questions arise.  Best wishes to Mike and all FOWT for future digs and possibly some answers.  I would highly recommend a visit whether you are a tourist or like us from Liverpool to discover some of the secrets of our wonderful city.

Having seen the tunnels on various TV shows, our guide, Mike, gave a captivating tour with stories from his years of tunnelling on the site as a volunteer, and interesting details of the variety of artifacts found. This is a working site, with new tunnels and spaces still being discovered. Well worth a visit - and we will be returning to see their progress from time to time.

						Well worth the visit We were recommended this tour by friends who had done it, and it didn’t disappoint. We had a great guide in Richard who was enthusiastic and brought to life the story of this mysterious network of tunnels and the man who’d created them. This is a hidden gem and deserves to be shouted about.

						Walk in the footsteps of the Mole of Edge Hill Who would have thought we would discover such a labyrinth of tunnels under the streets of Liverpool courtesy of the Friends of Williamsons Tunnels?  What the volunteers have done to discover and uncover this magical place is remarkable.  Our small group was guided through the tunnels by our friendly and knowledgeable guide Mike who coincidentally was who I had email contact with to arrange our tour.  The response to my enquiry was speedy and we were all set to go.  We continued on to an extended tour and we spent several interesting hours in total exploring the work of Mr Williamson.  I would highly recommend visiting the tunnels for a unique experience you won’t forget.

						Lovely, Funny, Informative I came in from Philadelphia for a couple days and I had a lovely tour with Mike! The tunnels are such a mysterious event beneath Liverpool and Mike is a great tour guide in explaining so much history to them. So thankful for answering all my questions, too! 						Epic! Really enjoyed our trip underground  with our excellent guide Chris. Very knowledgeable and explained everything really well. We were very lucky to have had our own personal guide as the tour we wanted to go on was fully booked so Mike very kindly arranged our tour with Chris. Cannot recommend this tour enough! Just epic!!!
					
					A super visit-again. Decided to suprise my brother in law with a visit to to see the tunnels. He visits from derbyshire, and loves Liverpool, as their is always something to see and do.

						Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels tour I found this to be a fascinating tour and our guide Tony was very interesting to listen to as he guided us around the tunnels (quarries). It was fascinating to see all of the pieces that had been reclaimed from when the tunnels were filled with Liverpool’s rubbish and hear little anecdotes about them. You need to be comfortable going up and down stairs for the tour.
					
					Extended longer than it needed to be The venue was great. 



The crazy man paying men to dig into sandstone to keep them off the streets - great 



The story - great. 



The discovered chambers -great. 



The tour taking 2 hours when only 1 hour would have been more than sufficient - not great.

						Liverpools labyrinth The Williamson tunnels are an absolutely marvel of human engineering. A great tour showed off parts of the tunnels that run under Edge Hill in Liverpool. Well worth a visit. Run by a great team of volunteers that make it an exploration to remember.
					
					Fantastic FREE Experience packed with facts from a knowledgeable volunteer A fabulous 1.5 hour experience. Packed with information and local history. A group of 12 of us visited to explore the subterranean architectural spaces. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels organised a bespoke tour for us across 2 different sites. We looked at the banqueting hall and the cathedral like 4 story deep quarry spaces. Our tour guide was Tom, and he was so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the history and the rediscovery of the tunnels (being one of the volunteers that helped to unearth the spaces for the public) 



This would be great for anyone local and visitors to the city who want a truly Liverpool Experience.  Its damp down there and there are staircases to descend, (so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and check accessibility requirements) but this all adds to the experience!

					A very interesting alternative thing to do This is an entirely volunteer-led free tour that takes you down below the streets of Liverpool to a network of underground caverns. I don't want to spoil any more of the story, as the guide will tell you about the history but the volunteers have a lot of passion and dedication and it shows!

						Discover the tunnels Excellent tour of the tunnels by an expert guide who really brought the whole experience alive with her expert knowledge. The history of the tunnels is so interesting but also the process of restoration by the team of volunteers was fascinating.
					
					A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.

						A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.

The tunnels were filled in after Williamson's death, leaving the early explorers from the Friends of Williamson's Tunnels to discover many objects still intact in the rubbish; some are on display in the tunnels.

All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

It is work in progress, a visit to a spectacular archaeological dig, in a quiet back street near the city centre, manned by enthusiasts, and where you may get mud on your clothes. There were lots of stairs. I was kitted out with hard hat and high viz.



I think it deserves bus loads of visitors, but it does not get them, apparently because it is rather offbeat and not everyone appreciates dank holes in the ground. With only discerning visitors, at least the volunteer workers have more time there for further digging! It is only open on a day or two in the week, so book your visit in advance.

					An amazing experience This tour is amazing and takes you deep into the tunnels below. It is a real experience and provides you with an insight into the history of the tunnels. Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. A special thank you to Tom for sharing his wealth of knowledge along the way.

The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool.

I visited with my 7 year old son, we got a taxi from the city centre that dropped us outside. We were shocked to see a standard detached row of houses lining one side of the road. We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

					Very interesting and great value. We decided to take out a friends of the tunnels membership so we could do the extended tour of the house and we are very glad we did. It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. There are quite a few steps, which was fine for us, but worth mentioning for anyone who struggles with mobility.

It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. There are quite a few steps, which was fine for us, but worth mentioning for anyone who struggles with mobility.

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. 					An excellent place to spend some time learning about one of Liverpools hidden gems. This is one of Liverpools hidden gems. Me (49) my son (12) and daughter (6) throughly enjoyed this experience. 						Definitely worth a visit! We had a thoroughly enjoyable tour of the tunnels with our guide Tom. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the history and layout of the tunnels, having been one of the people who worked hard excavating on the site.  The volunteers make you feel very welcome and I would highly recommend this tour. In fact this is my second visit!

						Highly recommended!! Wow what an amazing experience  we had at FOIWT.. My son and I visited and are already planning  to visit again soon.

						I enjoyed an absolutely amazing time with my fellow walkers of the St Helens Group RA when we went on an guided tour of 'Williamson Tunnels' by the 'Friends Of Williamson Tunnels' on Sunday. It was very interesting, and I will definitely go again to see how much more the volunteers have uncovered as they continue with the exploration digging they're doing, and definitely recommend anyone to go and visit and witness the remarkable sites of both the Tunnels, and remains of the former Mansion House of Williamson themselves. :)

					It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. The free tour I attended lasts approximately 1.5 - 2 hours. You visit the tunnels, but in addition, our guide Peter shared lots of important facts and information about the site and its history. All the staff are very friendly, and the work they do to continue the recovery efforts in these tunnels is admirable. I definitely recommend it!!

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.

The underground spaces themselves have been painstakingly emptied of the spoil that had filled them, and have been restored to their as built condition.  The collection of items that have been removed from the tunnels when they were used as a dumping ground provides some interesting snapshots of Britain over the decades.  The FoWT aim to find the other tunnels & underground spaces and restore them to how they were originally built - you really do get the impression that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

What’s incredible is that everything you see today has been painstakingly uncovered by volunteers since the 1990s  - by hand, bucket by bucket.



Our guide Mike was excellent - knowledgeable, engaging, and handled a few… lively tour members with total professionalism.

					We visited the Paddington underground area albeit it's vaulted and resembles a tunnel, Tony informed us that it is technically a quarry. Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

						We visited the Paddington underground area albeit it's vaulted and resembles a tunnel, Tony informed us that it is technically a quarry. Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

						Интересная локация, таинственная история, очень классная команда гидов, которые горят своим делом! Нам очень понравилась экскурсия и сами подземелья, хотелось бы, чтобы это дело продвигалось дальше и расцветало🙂
					
					Such a unique and personalised experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history, caves, community, or simply something wonderfully quirky. We were only visiting for a weekend and the tours were initially sold out; however, Mike was incredibly helpful. As soon as a cancellation came through, he informed us immediately and we were able to secure our places.

The tour is delivered either by one of the founders or by those who took part in the excavations themselves, meaning the knowledge shared is rich, personal, and engaging no matter how many times you visit. We were able to ask numerous questions, and at the end we even met almost the entire team who have been working there voluntarily for decades.

I truly loved it and deeply admire the dedication of this community in preserving the heritage and stories of the past for future generations.

					Wow! After having a brilliant tour with Clare around the house site,  we came back a few days later to visit the Paddington site,  this time with Chris. Both guides were very knowledgeable and both sites are well worth a visit. Its amazing the work put into making these tunnels accessible, so well done to all the volunteers! Well worth a visit if you are in Liverpool!

The tour is personable and not at all like a generic or scripted. Left feeling ALOT more informed about my city and the endevours Williamson initially went through in his curiosity and passions.

Mike was our tour guide and very knowledgeable and so enthusiastic, took us deep down to the Paddington Williamson tunnel site, let us explored together when and how to discover, protect this amazing heritage. Let us learned more about the history and the details of every corner inside the tunnel. Best to book online in advance on the Friends website. The standard tours are free, although if you join as a member (£5) there is an extended tour available. This extended part was in my opinion even better than the first part & definitely worth it. 						This tour was a spectacular hidden gem of Liverpool. We had a tour with Phil, and he was an amazing guide. The tunnels were mind boggling. Everytime we entered  a new section, I was in more awe. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!
