					The tunnels that aren’t tunnels at all! Fascinating place to visit.  All the more so as it still has many secrets left to give up.  Nowhere else like it.  Highly recommended.  Look forward to visiting again and exploring further..

					Very interesting and great value. We decided to take out a friends of the tunnels membership so we could do the extended tour of the house and we are very glad we did. It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. There are quite a few steps, which was fine for us, but worth mentioning for anyone who struggles with mobility.

						Very interesting and great value. We decided to take out a friends of the tunnels membership so we could do the extended tour of the house and we are very glad we did. It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. There are quite a few steps, which was fine for us, but worth mentioning for anyone who struggles with mobility.

						Great visit to Friends of Williamson Tunnels Having brought ex-scouser friends back to Liverpool for a couple of days I was not sure what they would make of the Williamson Tunnels friends site. They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. The very favourable impressions were augmented by the verve with which our guide, Mandy, explained everything from the layout to the articles found during excavation. All in all a very enjoyable visit.

						A great and memorable visit Great tour and very informative about what could be considered a hidden jewel in Liverpool. Shrouded in mystery and full of interesting information about the area and perhaps the reasons for Master Williamson to build these tunnels. The work done by the volunteers to save this important historical site is absolutely wonderful. I recommend anyone interested in local history and how folk lived around the Napoleanic wars and after, should not miss this tour when visiting Liverpool. A great shout out to Mike our highly enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer and the work that has been done. He made it a delightful 2 hours. Top stars to all involved.
					
					A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.

The tunnels were filled in after Williamson's death, leaving the early explorers from the Friends of Williamson's Tunnels to discover many objects still intact in the rubbish; some are on display in the tunnels.

All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

						A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. 						Excellent way to spend an afternoon Excellent trip and a very engaging and informed guide (Mike) who brought the whole trip to life. Incredible that the network has been built and now being saved due to the hard work of volunteers. Incredible part of Liverpool's heritage.
					
					Well Worth A Visit If you are ever in Liverpool, you should really try to visit this amazing attraction.   The tunnels themselves are breath taking, with a remarkable history.   

However, I really need to praise the volunteers running the tours.  They were so friendly and welcoming.   Unlike many commercial attractions, we were not hurried and made to feel at home instantly.  Clare our guide was fantastic, she was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, we were in awe.   She really did go out of her way to make our tour feel special.

						Must see attraction Such a fantastic visit - Tony the guide was wonderful and so knowledgeable. Many friendly volunteers who do a cracking job and you can help yourself to tea and coffee etc beforehand if you arrive early. So much to learn and a must see in Liverpool.
					
					A ‘must see’ and a great lesson in social history. It was an excellent tour which we thoroughly enjoyed. 						Hidden historic gem A completely unique and wholly immersive experience. If you can go visit these tunnels then you definitely should, because wow! I never would have guessed such an intriguing piece of Liverpool history would be underneath an urban car park. Our guide Tom was very knowledgeable, engaging and enthusiastic.

						Great tour. Highly recommend taking it. What an interesting tour. Been meaning to do it for ages. Mandy was our guide. My gosh she was so knowledgeable and fun, throwing in lots of little stories about the tunnels but also snippets of historical information on Liverpool itself. When you drive in, it looks like there isn't anything there, so it's quite a shock once you go underground. What a feat of engineering and vision. Highly recommend the tour and can only hope that the Heritage Centre can get saved. Too many sites in the city have been dismissed by city Councils. We have an amazing history and it should all be celebrated, including Mr Williamson.

					One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. Firstly we were welcomed by the volunteer guides and offered tea/coffee and biscuits. Everyone was friendly. The tour was amazing and our guide spent time answering all our questions. We were given loads of time to see everything. I would highly recommend that visitors become members and book the full tour. I've been on various Liverpool tours and I would rate this one amongst the best.

						One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. 					What an amazing place! A group of 24 of us went today. We were made very welcome. Our guides were enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. The whole place was fascinating. There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. Just bear in mind that you are going underground and there are steps and uneven surfaces. There are 2 separate sections to visit. We were there for atleast 2 and a half hours. There's also a little shop if you want to buy souvenirs.

						Well worth the visit We were recommended this tour by friends who had done it, and it didn’t disappoint. We had a great guide in Richard who was enthusiastic and brought to life the story of this mysterious network of tunnels and the man who’d created them. This is a hidden gem and deserves to be shouted about.
					
					Like walking back in time. Excellent experience, Mike was a great guide, extremely knowledgeable and the visit was fascinating. The work the Friends of Williamson Tunnel have done is quite staggering. The tunnels are amazing as are the artefacts found in them. 

The singing in the cathedral chamber was something we will never forget.

					Superb historical excavations What a brilliant experience guided by the very knowledgeable Tom. What he doesn't know about the tunnels and the history isn't worth knowing. We only experienced the Paddington excavation which is probably less than one tenth of the whole system. Will definitely be booking on the main tour. The amount of discarded artifacts from the Victorian era onwards was fascinating. Well done to all involved. We even discovered that my wife is related to William Boote, the grocer who occupied several of the Williamson buildings!

We only experienced the Paddington excavation which is probably less than one tenth of the whole system. Will definitely be booking on the main tour. The amount of discarded artifacts from the Victorian era onwards was fascinating. Well done to all involved. We even discovered that my wife is related to William Boote, the grocer who occupied several of the Williamson buildings!

						Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. All the volunteers were friendly, polite and welcoming. I won’t say too much about the tour other than you need to go and have the experience . It’s fascinating! 						Well worth a visit and great team of knowledgeable volunteers. These hardworking volunteers give up precious time and are so passionate and dedicated to their role and it was very much appreciated. Really interesting, honest and informative. 						Going Underground in Liverpool My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm.

					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

						Hidden Gem! Literally! What a fascinating visit!  This really is Liverpool's little hidden gem!  

(I'm at a loss why there is not more positive support and assistance).  This is a unique part of the city's history.  There is just so much more to be explored.  

Our guide Chris was both entertaining and informative.   His explanations really brought the history to life.

From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. 					FOWT As part of our 50th anniversary weekend we decided to visit FOWT. From the first inquiry Mike arranged to fit us into a very busy schedule. As soon as you go underground and see the original site photos and start to hear the history of the dig you understand the massive task and achievement so far.  The tunnels are fascinating layer after layer and the array of the many items found during the dig are quite incredible and displayed beautifully .  Many of the items make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. As we entered one chamber Mike asked if anyone would like to sing to appreciate the acoustics, my husband being a Liverpool fan sang you’ll never walk alone, what a memorable experience to take away with us.  Mikes knowledge and passion for the site made our trip even more enjoyable but as he said the more answers you look for the more questions arise.  Best wishes to Mike and all FOWT for future digs and possibly some answers.  I would highly recommend a visit whether you are a tourist or like us from Liverpool to discover some of the secrets of our wonderful city.

Right from the get go, going down those first few steps underground this place captivated my imagination. It's like something out of a book. It's so fascinating to see and hear the history of these odd spaces, all whilst being stood inside them deep underground on some unassuming street in Liverpool.

The team have applied to English Heritage for a listing which will help them receive Local Authority permission to expand their area of excavation. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels enterprise is a charity with all the excavation work and ensuring  site safety  and visitors tours being done by local volunteers.. It relies on local donations from visitors to keep going. Hopefully they will be successful in attracting Lottery funding in the future.

					Fantastic experience What an amazing time we had visiting the tunnels. 

I visited with my 7 year old son, we got a taxi from the city centre that dropped us outside. We were shocked to see a standard detached row of houses lining one side of the road. We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

We were very lucky to have had our own personal guide as the tour we wanted to go on was fully booked so Mike very kindly arranged our tour with Chris. Cannot recommend this tour enough! Just epic!!!

A group of 12 of us visited to explore the subterranean architectural spaces. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels organised a bespoke tour for us across 2 different sites. We looked at the banqueting hall and the cathedral like 4 story deep quarry spaces. Our tour guide was Tom, and he was so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the history and the rediscovery of the tunnels (being one of the volunteers that helped to unearth the spaces for the public) 



This would be great for anyone local and visitors to the city who want a truly Liverpool Experience.  Its damp down there and there are staircases to descend, (so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and check accessibility requirements) but this all adds to the experience!

					Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! We ended up being the only people on the 12:30 tour, but our guide Tom still gave us a ‘private’ tour - he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate that the tour still went ahead.

I will probably return again in a couple of years, and see if any new evidence or tunnels have been found by then!

						Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! We ended up being the only people on the 12:30 tour, but our guide Tom still gave us a ‘private’ tour - he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate that the tour still went ahead.

I will probably return again in a couple of years, and see if any new evidence or tunnels have been found by then!

						Fascinating This was a fascinating insight into the history of the tunnels and the man behind their construction. 



Our guide, Tony, was full of interesting information on both counts and encouraged further investigation. He clearly knew his subject well.

						Liverpools labyrinth The Williamson tunnels are an absolutely marvel of human engineering. A great tour showed off parts of the tunnels that run under Edge Hill in Liverpool. Well worth a visit. Run by a great team of volunteers that make it an exploration to remember.

						A very interesting alternative thing to do This is an entirely volunteer-led free tour that takes you down below the streets of Liverpool to a network of underground caverns. I don't want to spoil any more of the story, as the guide will tell you about the history but the volunteers have a lot of passion and dedication and it shows!

					An amazing experience This tour is amazing and takes you deep into the tunnels below. It is a real experience and provides you with an insight into the history of the tunnels. Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. 						Wonderful visit. Recently visited the tunnels with a group of friends and received a warm welcome from our guides Mandy and Clare who throughout our visit, were very knowledgable, and patient and all delivered with a great sense of humour. Our small group all felt that our tour had opened their eyes not only about the work that the Friends continue to do , but also a rare insight  into a part of Livepools historical social history which is often overlooked. I cannot recommend visiting this place enough.

					I enjoyed an absolutely amazing time with my fellow walkers of the St Helens Group RA when we went on an guided tour of 'Williamson Tunnels' by the 'Friends Of Williamson Tunnels' on Sunday. 						Firstly WOW! What a amazing testimony to Liverpools Heritage,  this group of founders including  really are a wonderful, insightful and friendly bunch.



The tour is personable and not at all like a generic or scripted. Left feeling ALOT more informed about my city and the endevours Williamson initially went through in his curiosity and passions.

					It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. 						It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. 						Wow! After having a brilliant tour with Clare around the house site,  we came back a few days later to visit the Paddington site,  this time with Chris. 					Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.

A passionate team of volunteers has painstakingly excavated and restored vaults, passageways and vast chambers, and they tell the story brilliantly. Our guide, Chris, took his time, answered every question, and made the labyrinth feel both mysterious and human. We spent about 2–2.5 hours below ground and didn’t feel bored for a second.

					We had a lovely time at the tunnels today. Tom was very informative, friendly and encouraging to explore the little rooms there was.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

						Cool tunnels and guide. Bring someone with you who can sing ... The acoustics are amazing in the caverns.
					
					Very cool and such a nice experience and friendly volunteers. but dissapoited we didn't actually go in willams Tunnels and went into Paddington tunnels instead but still an amazing experience and deffo worth going.

					We visited the Paddington underground area albeit it's vaulted and resembles a tunnel, Tony informed us that it is technically a quarry. Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

Thanks Tony and the team for all the information and warm welcome on a wet cool Sunday afternoon.

						We visited the Paddington underground area albeit it's vaulted and resembles a tunnel, Tony informed us that it is technically a quarry. Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

						We booked the 1230 tour on the Sunday and once fully kitted with helmet and high vis we set off to visit one of the tunnels rediscovered 60 years after they were last seen. A fascinating tour led by one of the volunteers who have spent many years clearing debris by hand from the tunnels. The history of Williamson, his tunnels and his workforce is mostly a mystery and makes for some debate about the motives, philanthropy and nature of the endeavours. We had such an interesting visit. 						Excellent and thoroughly recommended. Staff are keen and passionate volunteers. Our tour guide Tom was knowledgeable and affable, and the tunnels themselves are amazing. Fascinating bit of history under our feet, get yourself down and donate if you can— you won't regret it.

						This tour was a spectacular hidden gem of Liverpool. We had a tour with Phil, and he was an amazing guide. The tunnels were mind boggling. Everytime we entered  a new section, I was in more awe. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!
