					An excellent place to spend some time learning about one of Liverpools hidden gems. This is one of Liverpools hidden gems. Me (49) my son (12) and daughter (6) throughly enjoyed this experience. The tunnels are a true enigmatic mystery. The guide (Mike)  is highly knowledgeable, passionate and interesting. A huge amount of credit must go to the whole team for what they’ve achieved in the last 25 years to keep this going on a shoestring budget. Compared to when I last visited this part of the tunnels in 2002, they have done SO much! The team truly embodies the Scouse spirit of hard work, grit, passion and determination. If you get chance, trust me, this is worth a visit.

						Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! We ended up being the only people on the 12:30 tour, but our guide Tom still gave us a ‘private’ tour - he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate that the tour still went ahead.

I will probably return again in a couple of years, and see if any new evidence or tunnels have been found by then!

						Very interesting and great value. We decided to take out a friends of the tunnels membership so we could do the extended tour of the house and we are very glad we did. It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. There are quite a few steps, which was fine for us, but worth mentioning for anyone who struggles with mobility.

						Definitely worth a visit. Mandy was an excellent guide. She told us so much about the history of the local area as well as the actual tunnels. She was fun and entertaining as well as very knowledgeable. The tunnels are amazing. Well worth a visit. There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. 						Fascinating experience I had long wanted to visit the tunnels so I decided to join  one of the tours as part of the Heritage Open Days. Our guide was Tom, who was very knowledgeable about the history of the tunnels. It was a fascinating experience into a lesser known part of Liverpool`s history.
					
					Extended tour I had a fantastic time at the tunnel, I felt very welcome, and was given a lot of interesting information. I would definitely recommend taking a trip here and becoming a member to ensure these tunnels stay open for all to see.

					Going Underground in Liverpool My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm. 



Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging,  knowledgable and down to earth! 



The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago. 



All in all a great afternoon!

						Going Underground in Liverpool My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm. 



Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging,  knowledgable and down to earth! 



The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

						What's lurking underground in Liverpool! We did'nt really know what to expect on our visit to the tunnels so we were both astounded when we were led underground! 					One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. Firstly we were welcomed by the volunteer guides and offered tea/coffee and biscuits. Everyone was friendly. The tour was amazing and our guide spent time answering all our questions. We were given loads of time to see everything. I would highly recommend that visitors become members and book the full tour. I've been on various Liverpool tours and I would rate this one amongst the best.

						One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. 						Amazing tour with the friendliest of tour guides! Thank you all for such an amazing day out Went today with a group of friends, it was an impromptu trip out, we're all local to the area and to find such a hidden gem so close to home is unbelievable , our tour Guide Tom was very thorough and really give us a great experience of the tunnels! I will 100% be back and sharing the experience with other friends and family as this is just such a good day out and the people doing the tours are all so friendly and welcoming.

					Great and informative City History. Amazing trip today with 14 members of the Boys Brigade from within the Liverpool Battalion.

It’s amazing when you find out so much more than you knew about our own city.

						Great and informative City History. Amazing trip today with 14 members of the Boys Brigade from within the Liverpool Battalion.

It’s amazing when you find out so much more than you knew about our own city.

Tour was well run with informative guides and are a credit to what should be a Listed Site of Major Historical Importance.

Should be better funded so that the volunteers can do more exploration and add to the wealth of history they have already discovered.

						Great visit to Friends of Williamson Tunnels Having brought ex-scouser friends back to Liverpool for a couple of days I was not sure what they would make of the Williamson Tunnels friends site. They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. The very favourable impressions were augmented by the verve with which our guide, Mandy, explained everything from the layout to the articles found during excavation. All in all a very enjoyable visit.

						Best tour we took all weekend! Tom and Claire were super informative and very friendly hosts. They gave you adequate time to ask questions, explore and take pictures. As we entered one chamber Mike asked if anyone would like to sing to appreciate the acoustics, my husband being a Liverpool fan sang you’ll never walk alone, what a memorable experience to take away with us.  Mikes knowledge and passion for the site made our trip even more enjoyable but as he said the more answers you look for the more questions arise. This time we booked a tour and returned with some friends. As it turned out, it was just us, our friends, and Mandy, our tour guide. What a bonus that was! Mandy was absolutely brilliant—friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and great fun throughout. She really helped make the whole experience special.



We also met the rest of the team above ground and had a laugh about how much things had changed since our last visit. The work that has been done is fantastic.



Every corner seems to reveal another treasure, and the whole place is fascinating. There is so much to see and learn that the time just flew by. In fact, at one point we even ended up singing “When I’m Calling You” in one of the lower caverns to experience the acoustics!



Britain’s Got Talent, here we come  although it would definitely have to be filmed in Williamson’s Tunnels for the full effect! 



All joking aside, this was one of the best days out we’ve had in ages. A huge thank you to Mandy and everyone involved in preserving and sharing this remarkable piece of Liverpool’s history. We had an absolute ball and can’t wait to come back again.

Every corner seems to reveal another treasure, and the whole place is fascinating. There is so much to see and learn that the time just flew by. In fact, at one point we even ended up singing “When I’m Calling You” in one of the lower caverns to experience the acoustics!



Britain’s Got Talent, here we come  although it would definitely have to be filmed in Williamson’s Tunnels for the full effect! 



All joking aside, this was one of the best days out we’ve had in ages. A huge thank you to Mandy and everyone involved in preserving and sharing this remarkable piece of Liverpool’s history. We had an absolute ball and can’t wait to come back again.

						An engineering marvel I’m not sure any written review will ever do justice to the experience of actually setting foot in the Williamson tunnels. From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. My wife and I both live in Liverpool, and now we are retired we have more time to visit our city and a visit to Williamson tunnels was always on our list. We are so glad we have done it now. My only disappointment is that such a wonderful treasure in our city is not funded by the council or some sort of trust. It is all down to donations. Mandy passed on her local knowledge of the area and the tunnels making the trip even more enjoyable.

We spent two hours in and around the tunnels in a group of 7 with Chris as our guide, he was both friendly and extremely knowledgeable, answering all our questions in detail and sharing all the facts which we can now pass on whenever we go over the tunnels! 						A worthwhile trip when in Liverpool! After our 30 min walk to the Williamson Tunnels (from the central) at first we thought ‘what lies beneath here?’. Well, a lot of history and facts! Tom, our guide, was very passionate and great at story telling. Friendly and welcoming, any questions asked were answered! Would recommend!

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

I wish they were given the permissions and also funding needed for them to carry on the amazing work they are doing.

I visited with my 7 year old son, we got a taxi from the city centre that dropped us outside. We were shocked to see a standard detached row of houses lining one side of the road. We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). 						Unique experience We really enjoyed the tunnels and experience. This is run by enthusiastic volunteers so not a polished commercial experience. It was fascinating to go underground and see the huge tunnels and the artifacts.

						Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. All the volunteers were friendly, polite and welcoming. I won’t say too much about the tour other than you need to go and have the experience . It’s fascinating! 					What an incredible experience! Absolutely fascinating tour conducted by volunteers who are passionate, knowledgeable and friendly. Happy to answer questions throughout. It really felt like they tailored the experience to the people being shown around, asking questions with genuine interest in us and adding in information about the geology and found objects that they knew would appeal to our group.



The areas explored are well lit and easy to move around in. Guides are quick to point out potential issues (correct ways to descend ladders safely).

						What an incredible experience! Absolutely fascinating tour conducted by volunteers who are passionate, knowledgeable and friendly. Happy to answer questions throughout. It really felt like they tailored the experience to the people being shown around, asking questions with genuine interest in us and adding in information about the geology and found objects that they knew would appeal to our group.



The areas explored are well lit and easy to move around in. Guides are quick to point out potential issues (correct ways to descend ladders safely).

The history behind the tunnels it’s unbelievable and the people that form the Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels are one of the kindest and lovely people I’ve ever seen. 					Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.

						Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.
					
					It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. This extended part was in my opinion even better than the first part & definitely worth it. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

					Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? To be honest I expected more to be excavated than is actually the case because of the rave reviews, though the amount of Earth removed is no less impressive & the lack of progress isn’t the fault of the FoWT. Red tape is holding them up apparently. Best to see this as a work in progress. When more is excavated, no doubt the tunnels will become even more impressive.

					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

The many of the knowledgeable volunteers have been there since the tunnels original rediscovery and they have worked constantly over 30 plus dedicated years to open more of the tunnels, bucket at a time due to limited space, a truly impressive achievement that is a fitting tribute  to the original works of the man himself. A unique experience of a unique part of Liverpool history. This should be visited by everyone, I know I will be back again.

						What a delightful experience! You can tell the volunteers have so much love for this place, and what an incredible opportunity to witness and explore Liverpool's hidden underground chambers. Can't recommend highly enough.

					Excellent free tour and really interesting background as to why the tunnels are there given by Tom who is extremely knowledgeable and passionate. Bear in mind this is a different location and group to the heritage centre.
