					Fantastic experience What an amazing time we had visiting the tunnels. 

I visited with my 7 year old son, we got a taxi from the city centre that dropped us outside. We were shocked to see a standard detached row of houses lining one side of the road. We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

					Terrific Tunnels! What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. Due to the size of the groups, it's a really intimate experience that allows you to ask all the questions you can think of. My guide, Chris, was so helpful and knowledgeable about the tunnels. I left knowing more and having seen some truly fantastic things! So grateful for the FoWT for running this and sharing their knwoledge and love of the tunnels.

						Terrific Tunnels! What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. Due to the size of the groups, it's a really intimate experience that allows you to ask all the questions you can think of. My guide, Chris, was so helpful and knowledgeable about the tunnels. 					A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.

The tunnels were filled in after Williamson's death, leaving the early explorers from the Friends of Williamson's Tunnels to discover many objects still intact in the rubbish; some are on display in the tunnels.

All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

						A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. 						the tour guide is a great comedian It is one of those small lesser known attractions you can visit in a city. You also have to call to make a reservation, can you imagine. Do not expect very spectacular things, but it is small, friendly, something you can bring up sympathy for and the tour guide was great comedian. It was worth missing a train for.

						Amazing! Totally intriguing and a real privilege to walk through the accessible tunnels.  Mike was excellent (and very patient!) as our guide and shared many stories and theories as we ventured through all 4 levels of the tunnels.  Let's hope they are able to keep digging to allow us all to see more!

					Birthday day out with FoWT Went today to visit the Williamson tunnels for my husband's birthday and we had a fascinating visit. 						Birthday day out with FoWT Went today to visit the Williamson tunnels for my husband's birthday and we had a fascinating visit. The tunnels themselves are so interesting but what  makes this organisation is the intrepid group of subterranean explorers who run it. Our guide was Tom, who was one of the excavators of the space we visited, and his passion was absolutely contagious. The tour overran, we were so busy talking, but the time flew by. We will be back to visit some of the members spaces!

					An a"MAZE"ing experience! This is such a quirky and historically important site, full of interest and yet so many unanswered questions as to the purpose of such a labyrinth. Excellent guides, amazing underground atmosphere. Not to be missed!

					Great time at 39 Mason Street, Edge Hill L7 3EW ! We read their good instructions to get here, and our Uber driver (£7.92 from Waterfront ) brought us to the door.

We had to wait for others who DID NOT READ the message properly!!



It was a very interesting visit, and we can certainly recommend.

Tom was our guide, who explained very thoroughly about the tunnels.

					Wonderful visit. Recently visited the tunnels with a group of friends and received a warm welcome from our guides Mandy and Clare who throughout our visit, were very knowledgable, and patient and all delivered with a great sense of humour. Our small group all felt that our tour had opened their eyes not only about the work that the Friends continue to do , but also a rare insight  into a part of Livepools historical social history which is often overlooked. I cannot recommend visiting this place enough.

						Wonderful visit. Recently visited the tunnels with a group of friends and received a warm welcome from our guides Mandy and Clare who throughout our visit, were very knowledgable, and patient and all delivered with a great sense of humour. Our small group all felt that our tour had opened their eyes not only about the work that the Friends continue to do , but also a rare insight  into a part of Livepools historical social history which is often overlooked. I cannot recommend visiting this place enough.

						Well worth a visit and great team of knowledgeable volunteers. 						Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. I’d highly recommend anyone to book, whether you’re local or from outside Liverpool. Some of Liverpools lost history that has been pieced together over time and the quarry itself - wow! The team have applied to English Heritage for a listing which will help them receive Local Authority permission to expand their area of excavation. It relies on local donations from visitors to keep going. Hopefully they will be successful in attracting Lottery funding in the future.

A great welcome and organisation and the guides were excellent and so enthusiastic. Even provided an extra person to help one of our members who suffers from Parkinsons. 

The visit itself is highly recommended, not only for the tunnels but the amazing artefacts on display.

We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. Massive thanks to to Mike and the team.

					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

Clare was our tour guide and was a pleasure, had so much knowledge and love for the history. Would recommend all who visit Liverpool and want to know the interesting history.

My gosh she was so knowledgeable and fun, throwing in lots of little stories about the tunnels but also snippets of historical information on Liverpool itself. When you drive in, it looks like there isn't anything there, so it's quite a shock once you go underground. What a feat of engineering and vision. Highly recommend the tour and can only hope that the Heritage Centre can get saved. Too many sites in the city have been dismissed by city Councils. The underground spaces themselves have been painstakingly emptied of the spoil that had filled them, and have been restored to their as built condition.  The collection of items that have been removed from the tunnels when they were used as a dumping ground provides some interesting snapshots of Britain over the decades.  The FoWT aim to find the other tunnels & underground spaces and restore them to how they were originally built - you really do get the impression that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

					Very interesting and great value. We decided to take out a friends of the tunnels membership so we could do the extended tour of the house and we are very glad we did. It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. There are quite a few steps, which was fine for us, but worth mentioning for anyone who struggles with mobility.

It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. There are quite a few steps, which was fine for us, but worth mentioning for anyone who struggles with mobility.

						A very interesting alternative thing to do This is an entirely volunteer-led free tour that takes you down below the streets of Liverpool to a network of underground caverns. I don't want to spoil any more of the story, as the guide will tell you about the history but the volunteers have a lot of passion and dedication and it shows!

Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.



The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool. 



Tours are free, but you can leave a donation at the end.

We also met the rest of the team above ground and had a laugh about how much things had changed since our last visit. The work that has been done is fantastic.



Every corner seems to reveal another treasure, and the whole place is fascinating. There is so much to see and learn that the time just flew by. In fact, at one point we even ended up singing “When I’m Calling You” in one of the lower caverns to experience the acoustics!



Britain’s Got Talent, here we come  although it would definitely have to be filmed in Williamson’s Tunnels for the full effect! 



All joking aside, this was one of the best days out we’ve had in ages. A huge thank you to Mandy and everyone involved in preserving and sharing this remarkable piece of Liverpool’s history. We had an absolute ball and can’t wait to come back again.

						100% recommend I wholeheartedly recommend this experience. It will be unforgettable. With the help of Tony and Laura I saw Liverpool in a different way. 					MUST VISIT This is a MUST VISIT site on any trip to Liverpool. We knew nothing of the history prior to the tour. Don't be put off by the unassuming entrance and location. 						MUST VISIT This is a MUST VISIT site on any trip to Liverpool. We knew nothing of the history prior to the tour. Don't be put off by the unassuming entrance and location. Our guide Chris was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic.  He didn't reveal all the information at first and that made it all the more intriguing. Absolutely fascinating tour. The volunteers are to be commended for their work and commitment. Will definitely visit again to see more.

Excellent cup of tea too.  Always a bonus.

The visit was booked as part of my partner’s birthday trip, I knew he’d love it as it’s such a unique place steeped in history and intrigue. 

It’s a fascinating look back in time to a really interesting & eccentric local philanthropist, the King of Edge Hill,  Joseph Williamson.

We loved seeing the tunnels themselves, the remains of his home and all the little pieces of life back then that had been left behind and later uncovered. 

Our guide Claire was amazing, interesting and engaging as well as absolutely lovely. We had a blast, we will be back another time for sure. We left with more questions than answers!

					Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! We ended up being the only people on the 12:30 tour, but our guide Tom still gave us a ‘private’ tour - he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate that the tour still went ahead.

I will probably return again in a couple of years, and see if any new evidence or tunnels have been found by then!

I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! 						Family visit We visited Williamson’s Tunnels as a family of four (two adults and two teenagers) and had a fantastic experience. The tunnels themselves are absolutely amazing and full of history, but what really made the visit special was our volunteer guide, Claire. She somehow managed to hold our teenagers’ attention for a full two hours — no small achievement! Her knowledge and enthusiasm brought the tunnels to life.

						Going Underground in Liverpool My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm. 



Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging,  knowledgable and down to earth! 



The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

					My friend and I went to look around ‘the tunnels’, Tom was our fantastic guide. His knowledge and story telling explained how the tunnel were found and explored. I already knew a little about the tunnels, so it was brilliant to talk with Tom and rid myself of some of the misconceptions I had. The fact that they weren’t tunnels, but quarries. A brilliant way to spend a morning and I offered my services if anymore holes need to be dug. Thanks Tom and all of the other volunteers.

I already knew a little about the tunnels, so it was brilliant to talk with Tom and rid myself of some of the misconceptions I had. The fact that they weren’t tunnels, but quarries. A brilliant way to spend a morning and I offered my services if anymore holes need to be dug. Thanks Tom and all of the other volunteers.

						We visited the Paddington underground area albeit it's vaulted and resembles a tunnel, Tony informed us that it is technically a quarry. Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

					We had a lovely time at the tunnels today. Tom was very informative, friendly and encouraging to explore the little rooms there was.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

					What an incredible experience! Absolutely fascinating tour conducted by volunteers who are passionate, knowledgeable and friendly. Happy to answer questions throughout. It really felt like they tailored the experience to the people being shown around, asking questions with genuine interest in us and adding in information about the geology and found objects that they knew would appeal to our group.



The areas explored are well lit and easy to move around in. Guides are quick to point out potential issues (correct ways to descend ladders safely).



All in all it was a tour that revealed lived experience, local Liverpool history, geology, engineering, family drama, Williamson's biography and speculative (well informed) musing.

						What an incredible experience! Absolutely fascinating tour conducted by volunteers who are passionate, knowledgeable and friendly. Happy to answer questions throughout. It really felt like they tailored the experience to the people being shown around, asking questions with genuine interest in us and adding in information about the geology and found objects that they knew would appeal to our group.



The areas explored are well lit and easy to move around in. Guides are quick to point out potential issues (correct ways to descend ladders safely).



All in all it was a tour that revealed lived experience, local Liverpool history, geology, engineering, family drama, Williamson's biography and speculative (well informed) musing.

					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

						Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

It was very interesting, and I will definitely go again to see how much more the volunteers have uncovered as they continue with the exploration digging they're doing, and definitely recommend anyone to go and visit and witness the remarkable sites of both the Tunnels, and remains of the former Mansion House of Williamson themselves. :)

					This tour has to be experienced to be believed. The deepest and most original site of the Williamson excavations with the massive banqueting hall deep enough for a whole house in itself. The many of the knowledgeable volunteers have been there since the tunnels original rediscovery and they have worked constantly over 30 plus dedicated years to open more of the tunnels, bucket at a time due to limited space, a truly impressive achievement that is a fitting tribute  to the original works of the man himself. A unique experience of a unique part of Liverpool history. This should be visited by everyone, I know I will be back again.

					The amount of effort that has been put in by volunteers to empty these spaces is phenomenal. Mandy was a great personable tour guide and her enthusiasm for the place certainly came across.

Worth signing up as a member to do the extended tour just to go down the gap leading in to the Banqueting chamber. Tours are free but are very deserving of a good donation towards their continued efforts.

They’ll explain with incredible detail the history and go through all the different chambers and tunnels Williamson built. 					It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. 						un labirinto sotterraneo ricco di mistero e fascino: esperienza super piacevole e inaspettata! le visite sono gestite dai volontari, che hanno anche fatto gli scavi per riportare alla luce i tunnel. ci ha guidato Chris, competente e pronto a rispondere ad ogni curiosità. vengono forniti caschetto e gilet alta visibilità, servono vestiti comodi caldi e scarpe chiuse.
