					Like walking back in time. Excellent experience, Mike was a great guide, extremely knowledgeable and the visit was fascinating. The work the Friends of Williamson Tunnel have done is quite staggering. The tunnels are amazing as are the artefacts found in them. 

The singing in the cathedral chamber was something we will never forget.

					A great and memorable visit Great tour and very informative about what could be considered a hidden jewel in Liverpool. Shrouded in mystery and full of interesting information about the area and perhaps the reasons for Master Williamson to build these tunnels. The work done by the volunteers to save this important historical site is absolutely wonderful. I recommend anyone interested in local history and how folk lived around the Napoleanic wars and after, should not miss this tour when visiting Liverpool. A great shout out to Mike our highly enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer and the work that has been done. He made it a delightful 2 hours. Top stars to all involved.

						A great and memorable visit Great tour and very informative about what could be considered a hidden jewel in Liverpool. 						A ‘must see’ and a great lesson in social history. It was an excellent tour which we thoroughly enjoyed. We’d heard a lot about the tunnels but seeing the scale of the them and the work done by the amazingly dedicated volunteers was awe inspiring.  Our guide, Clare, was so proficient and knowledgeable and we were given plenty of time to look around and absorb the information. She was relaxed and very friendly. Without the volunteers places like this would be lost forever.

						Welcoming ‘Friends’ Highly recommend this visit! Our guide Chris was very friendly and informative! Was great to see the amazing tunnels under our feet and hear about the work the ‘friends’ have done to allow us to visit! All the ‘friends’ made us feel very welcome offering us a brew and biscuit when we arrived and were happy to answer any questions!
					
					The tunnels that aren’t tunnels at all! Fascinating place to visit.  All the more so as it still has many secrets left to give up.  Nowhere else like it.  Highly recommended.  Look forward to visiting again and exploring further..

						A fascinating insight into a long-forgotten history Inspired by a television report, I visited the Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels. 						A fascinating view into old Liverpool Our tour of the tunnels was expertly guided by Chris. It was very interesting to hear the tales about how the rubble was removed from the tunnels and look at the many artefacts that had been unearthed. Chris did well picking out interesting articles such as the Edward 7th commemorative china cup. Overall 2 hours well spent.

The Guides are excellent and keep the tour very interesting,

First thing to say is that this place is Free to visit,

The Guides are excellent and keep the tour very interesting,

We totally lost track of time here as it was so unique and interesting,

The passion and dedication of the team is obvious throughout the tour.

					the tour guide is a great comedian It is one of those small lesser known attractions you can visit in a city. You also have to call to make a reservation, can you imagine. Do not expect very spectacular things, but it is small, friendly, something you can bring up sympathy for and the tour guide was great comedian. It was worth missing a train for.

Do not expect very spectacular things, but it is small, friendly, something you can bring up sympathy for and the tour guide was great comedian. It was worth missing a train for.

Remarkable tunnel building and stories of times gone by.

					Excellent Tour. Visit highly recommended. . Excellent tour given by Tony. The whole team were very knowledgeable, enthusiatic and friendly. We did the extended tour of the tunnels and really enjoyed our visit. The team have applied to English Heritage for a listing which will help them receive Local Authority permission to expand their area of excavation. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels enterprise is a charity with all the excavation work and ensuring  site safety  and visitors tours being done by local volunteers.. It relies on local donations from visitors to keep going. Hopefully they will be successful in attracting Lottery funding in the future. 



I strongly recommend a visit to see the great work the team are doing.

We did the extended tour of the tunnels and really enjoyed our visit. The team have applied to English Heritage for a listing which will help them receive Local Authority permission to expand their area of excavation. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels enterprise is a charity with all the excavation work and ensuring  site safety  and visitors tours being done by local volunteers.. It relies on local donations from visitors to keep going. Hopefully they will be successful in attracting Lottery funding in the future.

						Liverpools labyrinth The Williamson tunnels are an absolutely marvel of human engineering. A great tour showed off parts of the tunnels that run under Edge Hill in Liverpool. Well worth a visit. Run by a great team of volunteers that make it an exploration to remember.

						Lovely, Funny, Informative I came in from Philadelphia for a couple days and I had a lovely tour with Mike! The tunnels are such a mysterious event beneath Liverpool and Mike is a great tour guide in explaining so much history to them. So thankful for answering all my questions, too! 					FOWT As part of our 50th anniversary weekend we decided to visit FOWT. From the first inquiry Mike arranged to fit us into a very busy schedule. As soon as you go underground and see the original site photos and start to hear the history of the dig you understand the massive task and achievement so far.  The tunnels are fascinating layer after layer and the array of the many items found during the dig are quite incredible and displayed beautifully .  Many of the items make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. As we entered one chamber Mike asked if anyone would like to sing to appreciate the acoustics, my husband being a Liverpool fan sang you’ll never walk alone, what a memorable experience to take away with us.  Mikes knowledge and passion for the site made our trip even more enjoyable but as he said the more answers you look for the more questions arise.  Best wishes to Mike and all FOWT for future digs and possibly some answers.  I would highly recommend a visit whether you are a tourist or like us from Liverpool to discover some of the secrets of our wonderful city.

					Fascinating look back at a fascinating part of Liverpool’s history I’d always wanted to do this tour as a long term urbexer, it pushed all my buttons & I was dying to know more. 

The visit was booked as part of my partner’s birthday trip, I knew he’d love it as it’s such a unique place steeped in history and intrigue. 

It’s a fascinating look back in time to a really interesting & eccentric local philanthropist, the King of Edge Hill,  Joseph Williamson.

We loved seeing the tunnels themselves, the remains of his home and all the little pieces of life back then that had been left behind and later uncovered. 

Our guide Claire was amazing, interesting and engaging as well as absolutely lovely. We had a blast, we will be back another time for sure. We left with more questions than answers!

						Fascinating look back at a fascinating part of Liverpool’s history I’d always wanted to do this tour as a long term urbexer, it pushed all my buttons & I was dying to know more. 

The visit was booked as part of my partner’s birthday trip, I knew he’d love it as it’s such a unique place steeped in history and intrigue. 

It’s a fascinating look back in time to a really interesting & eccentric local philanthropist, the King of Edge Hill,  Joseph Williamson.

We loved seeing the tunnels themselves, the remains of his home and all the little pieces of life back then that had been left behind and later uncovered. 

Our guide Claire was amazing, interesting and engaging as well as absolutely lovely. We had a blast, we will be back another time for sure. We left with more questions than answers!

						You must visit the Tunnels Great bunch of people, good banter ( we were in Liverpool after all) . The tour by Chris was very informative and for me one of the the measures of a good trip is that I learned something, which I did. Chris really knew his stuff, how to lead a tour and was  very safety conscious. Really good experience
					
					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

						Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

						Great morning, a real alternative to traditional sites. This was such an interesting trip. Peter was our guide, bear in mind they are all volunteers, he was full of inormation, looked to answer all questions and was really engaging. Who knew what goes on beneath the streets?

					We are part of a social group and we attended the Williamson tunnels as part of a group outing.

We would really recommend this tour as a fascinating and interesting tour to look into Liverpools past history.

We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.



After a brief safety talk given by Tom our group guide, we were then taken down to the first of four levels of this amazing tour.



It's hard to imagine all the hard work that the volunteers have done to get the tunnels in the condition that they are today.

It just got better the lower we went into the tunnels.

						We are part of a social group and we attended the Williamson tunnels as part of a group outing.

We would really recommend this tour as a fascinating and interesting tour to look into Liverpools past history.

We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.



After a brief safety talk given by Tom our group guide, we were then taken down to the first of four levels of this amazing tour.



It's hard to imagine all the hard work that the volunteers have done to get the tunnels in the condition that they are today.

It just got better the lower we went into the tunnels.

					Fantastic experience What an amazing time we had visiting the tunnels. 

I visited with my 7 year old son, we got a taxi from the city centre that dropped us outside. We were shocked to see a standard detached row of houses lining one side of the road. We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

						A very interesting alternative thing to do This is an entirely volunteer-led free tour that takes you down below the streets of Liverpool to a network of underground caverns. I don't want to spoil any more of the story, as the guide will tell you about the history but the volunteers have a lot of passion and dedication and it shows!

						Best tour we took all weekend! Tom and Claire were super informative and very friendly hosts. They gave you adequate time to ask questions, explore and take pictures. I’d highly recommend anyone to book, whether you’re local or from outside Liverpool. Some of Liverpools lost history that has been pieced together over time and the quarry itself - wow! 					A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.

The tunnels were filled in after Williamson's death, leaving the early explorers from the Friends of Williamson's Tunnels to discover many objects still intact in the rubbish; some are on display in the tunnels.

All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

Being from Liverpool, a visit to tunnels is something I’d wanted to do for a long time and it was lovely to see people from as far as the US in our group of 11. 						🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Not to be missed Gem of an experience and one not to be missed. Mike was a fantastic Guide and had been involved with FOWT for many years involved in the clearances which enabled him to share many anecdotes which further illuminated the fascinating history of the project. 

Williamson was a fascinating character and I look forward to returning and touring more of the tunnels.

This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.

Recently visited the tunnels with a group of friends and received a warm welcome from our guides Mandy and Clare who throughout our visit, were very knowledgable, and patient and all delivered with a great sense of humour. Our small group all felt that our tour had opened their eyes not only about the work that the Friends continue to do , but also a rare insight  into a part of Livepools historical social history which is often overlooked. I cannot recommend visiting this place enough.

						Fascinating experience I had long wanted to visit the tunnels so I decided to join  one of the tours as part of the Heritage Open Days. 					Williamson Tunnels  - Why? Quirky attraction to see the Willamson Tunnels probably dug by soldiers with no other work returning from the Napoleonic Wars after 1812.



Extremely wealthy philanthropist Joseph Williamson decided to dig tunnels under parts of Liverpool to employ out of work soldiers for no other reasons than he had money and he could.



We had an excellent guide in archaeology student Georgia who knew her stuff and helped make our visit memorable to this quirky attraction.

						Williamson Tunnels  - Why? Quirky attraction to see the Willamson Tunnels probably dug by soldiers with no other work returning from the Napoleonic Wars after 1812.



Extremely wealthy philanthropist Joseph Williamson decided to dig tunnels under parts of Liverpool to employ out of work soldiers for no other reasons than he had money and he could.



We had an excellent guide in archaeology student Georgia who knew her stuff and helped make our visit memorable to this quirky attraction.
					
					Extended longer than it needed to be The venue was great.

The discovered chambers -great. 



The tour taking 2 hours when only 1 hour would have been more than sufficient - not great.

						Amazing experience We went on a tour of the Williamson tunnels today and it was absolutely amazing. There was only the 2 of us with our tour guide, Tom, and he was so friendly and really informative, he really knew his stuff!

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

I wish they were given the permissions and also funding needed for them to carry on the amazing work they are doing.

Right from the get go, going down those first few steps underground this place captivated my imagination. It's like something out of a book. What the volunteers have done to discover and uncover this magical place is remarkable.  Our small group was guided through the tunnels by our friendly and knowledgeable guide Mike who coincidentally was who I had email contact with to arrange our tour.  The response to my enquiry was speedy and we were all set to go.  We continued on to an extended tour and we spent several interesting hours in total exploring the work of Mr Williamson.  I would highly recommend visiting the tunnels for a unique experience you won’t forget.

Mandy was absolutely brilliant—friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and great fun throughout. She really helped make the whole experience special.



We also met the rest of the team above ground and had a laugh about how much things had changed since our last visit. The work that has been done is fantastic.



Every corner seems to reveal another treasure, and the whole place is fascinating. There is so much to see and learn that the time just flew by. In fact, at one point we even ended up singing “When I’m Calling You” in one of the lower caverns to experience the acoustics!



Britain’s Got Talent, here we come  although it would definitely have to be filmed in Williamson’s Tunnels for the full effect! 



All joking aside, this was one of the best days out we’ve had in ages. A huge thank you to Mandy and everyone involved in preserving and sharing this remarkable piece of Liverpool’s history. We had an absolute ball and can’t wait to come back again.

						The council are fools to not be supporting this. It’s an incredible piece of history with clearly passionate volunteers digging out these crazy tunnels. The stories of how they came to clear out these huge underground caverns are as interesting as the history itself. Definitely check them out

					This tour has to be experienced to be believed. The deepest and most original site of the Williamson excavations with the massive banqueting hall deep enough for a whole house in itself. The many of the knowledgeable volunteers have been there since the tunnels original rediscovery and they have worked constantly over 30 plus dedicated years to open more of the tunnels, bucket at a time due to limited space, a truly impressive achievement that is a fitting tribute  to the original works of the man himself. A unique experience of a unique part of Liverpool history. This should be visited by everyone, I know I will be back again.

Shrouded in mystery and full of interesting information about the area and perhaps the reasons for Master Williamson to build these tunnels. The work done by the volunteers to save this important historical site is absolutely wonderful. I recommend anyone interested in local history and how folk lived around the Napoleanic wars and after, should not miss this tour  when visiting Liverpool. Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

						Definitely worth a visit in Liverpool if you are looking for a unique and different experience. Excellent guides, I emailed the day before and Mike booked me in. Our guide Clare was fantastic, all of these people are volunteers and they do such a great job. The tunnels themselves are something else particularly the deepest one absolutely surreal. What’s incredible is that everything you see today has been painstakingly uncovered by volunteers since the 1990s  - by hand, bucket by bucket.



Our guide Mike was excellent - knowledgeable, engaging, and handled a few… lively tour members with total professionalism.



The fact it’s entirely volunteer-run makes it even more impressive. They’ve clearly put years of effort into uncovering and preserving something really special, often without the level of support they deserve.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

					Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.

						A hidden gem among Liverpool's many treasures. We had a great experience and our guide Tom gave us a really insightful tour. The dedication of the volunteers to keeping this part of Liverpool's history alive is amazing and I wish them all the best in their future endeavours. Definitely a highlight of our trip!

					Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? To be honest I expected more to be excavated than is actually the case because of the rave reviews, though the amount of Earth removed is no less impressive & the lack of progress isn’t the fault of the FoWT. Red tape is holding them up apparently. Best to see this as a work in progress. When more is excavated, no doubt the tunnels will become even more impressive.

						Very cool and such a nice experience and friendly volunteers. but dissapoited we didn't actually go in willams Tunnels and went into Paddington tunnels instead but still an amazing experience and deffo worth going.
					
					This is a fascinating place to visit as part of Liverpools heritage.  At first glance you may think what is this place as on the surface it may not seem too attractive, but the magic of the experience is to be found underground. With the history of how they excavated it and what they found, I was captivated for the whole tour, led by Lynn, who was a great guide. 😁
