						Great visit to the Williamson’s Tunnels with The Friends of the Williamson Tunnels We had been looking forward to the visit and we weren't disappointed. Our tour guide Andy  was knowledgeable, friendly and he answered all our questions.
					
					Extended tour I had a fantastic time at the tunnel, I felt very welcome, and was given a lot of interesting information. I would definitely recommend taking a trip here and becoming a member to ensure these tunnels stay open for all to see.

						History below Liverpool When visiting places always like to do something different. As such booked Williamsons Tunnels in advance and was not disappointed. Tom , our quite provided a full explanation about them and the ‘exploring’ was very interesting. No charge but a donation is gladly accepted and well worth it
					
					Brilliant Experience What a fantastic thing to experience! I've lived near Liverpool for nearly 30 years, and never knew there was something like this lying below the city. Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.



The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool. 



Tours are free, but you can leave a donation at the end. 



It's best to book as far in advance as is possible, especially during summer peak season.

						Brilliant Experience What a fantastic thing to experience! I've lived near Liverpool for nearly 30 years, and never knew there was something like this lying below the city. Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. 					Underground chambers in Edge Hill We booked this visit as a "something to do" before having a reunion lunch with more friends, and it was a great choice. Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

						Hidden historic gem A completely unique and wholly immersive experience. If you can go visit these tunnels then you definitely should, because wow! I never would have guessed such an intriguing piece of Liverpool history would be underneath an urban car park. Our guide Tom was very knowledgeable, engaging and enthusiastic.

Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. A special thank you to Tom for sharing his wealth of knowledge along the way.

Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. 						Super visit to Williamson Tunnels by Chester U3A A superb visit to the Williamson Tunnels by the Industrial Heritage group from Chester U3A. A great welcome and organisation and the guides were excellent and so enthusiastic. Even provided an extra person to help one of our members who suffers from Parkinsons. 

The visit itself is highly recommended, not only for the tunnels but the amazing artefacts on display.

This is not some polished visitor attraction, but rather a living, breathing ongoing archaeology project run by enthusiastic and very knowledgeable volunteers.  I didn't have time to explore all the tunnels on this visit, but I will definitely be back for more.  It's free to visit, and although I joined the Friends and made a donation, there's absolutely no pressure to do so.
					
					Lovely, Funny, Informative I came in from Philadelphia for a couple days and I had a lovely tour with Mike! The tunnels are such a mysterious event beneath Liverpool and Mike is a great tour guide in explaining so much history to them. So thankful for answering all my questions, too! The tunnels are such a mysterious event beneath Liverpool and Mike is a great tour guide in explaining so much history to them. So thankful for answering all my questions, too! For anyone considering it, absolutely book it!
					
					It’s free of charge but you’ll be happy to pay once you see it! Mike gave us a tour today of both the Paddington site and Joseph Williamson’s house site and both were absolutely brilliant. The Victorian relics found on the site during the digs are on display and it is so interesting to see daily household items from that era and piece together a picture of what life was like in Liverpool during that time. The tunnels themselves are vast and the depth of them is just incomprehensible, especially when the intention behind them remains unknown! I’ve lived in Liverpool all my life and I knew the tunnels existed but I never knew the full extent of them (and I still don’t as Mike explained that there is so much more to be discovered!) I really really 100% recommend that everyone does this tour. Hopefully the council sees sense and provides the necessary lease and the digging can continue because it would be such a shame if this amount of history was to be lost!

					Very interesting and great value. We decided to take out a friends of the tunnels membership so we could do the extended tour of the house and we are very glad we did. It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. There are quite a few steps, which was fine for us, but worth mentioning for anyone who struggles with mobility.

						Very interesting and great value. We decided to take out a friends of the tunnels membership so we could do the extended tour of the house and we are very glad we did. It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. There are quite a few steps, which was fine for us, but worth mentioning for anyone who struggles with mobility.

					What an amazing place! A group of 24 of us went today. We were made very welcome. Our guides were enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. The whole place was fascinating. There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. Just bear in mind that you are going underground and there are steps and uneven surfaces. There are 2 separate sections to visit. We were there for atleast 2 and a half hours. There's also a little shop if you want to buy souvenirs.

						What an amazing place! A group of 24 of us went today. We were made very welcome. Our guides were enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. The whole place was fascinating. There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. Just bear in mind that you are going underground and there are steps and uneven surfaces. There are 2 separate sections to visit. We were there for atleast 2 and a half hours. The tunnels themselves are so interesting but what  makes this organisation is the intrepid group of subterranean explorers who run it. Our guide was Tom, who was one of the excavators of the space we visited, and his passion was absolutely contagious. The tour overran, we were so busy talking, but the time flew by. We will be back to visit some of the members spaces!

It’s amazing when you find out so much more than you knew about our own city.

We looked at the banqueting hall and the cathedral like 4 story deep quarry spaces. Our tour guide was Tom, and he was so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the history and the rediscovery of the tunnels (being one of the volunteers that helped to unearth the spaces for the public) 



This would be great for anyone local and visitors to the city who want a truly Liverpool Experience.  Its damp down there and there are staircases to descend, (so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and check accessibility requirements) but this all adds to the experience!

We would really recommend this tour as a fascinating and interesting tour to look into Liverpools past history.

We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.



After a brief safety talk given by Tom our group guide, we were then taken down to the first of four levels of this amazing tour.

						Great visit to Friends of Williamson Tunnels Having brought ex-scouser friends back to Liverpool for a couple of days I was not sure what they would make of the Williamson Tunnels friends site. They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. The very favourable impressions were augmented by the verve with which our guide, Mandy, explained everything from the layout to the articles found during excavation. All in all a very enjoyable visit.
					
					Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels tour I found this to be a fascinating tour and our guide Tony was very interesting to listen to as he guided us around the tunnels (quarries). It was fascinating to see all of the pieces that had been reclaimed from when the tunnels were filled with Liverpool’s rubbish and hear little anecdotes about them. You need to be comfortable going up and down stairs for the tour.

						Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels tour I found this to be a fascinating tour and our guide Tony was very interesting to listen to as he guided us around the tunnels (quarries). It was fascinating to see all of the pieces that had been reclaimed from when the tunnels were filled with Liverpool’s rubbish and hear little anecdotes about them. You need to be comfortable going up and down stairs for the tour.

						Terrific Tunnels! What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. Massive thanks to to Mike and the team.

					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

						Discover the tunnels Excellent tour of the tunnels by an expert guide who really brought the whole experience alive with her expert knowledge. The history of the tunnels is so interesting but also the process of restoration by the team of volunteers was fascinating.
					
					Amazing experience We went on a tour of the Williamson tunnels today and it was absolutely amazing. There was only the 2 of us with our tour guide, Tom, and he was so friendly and really informative, he really knew his stuff!

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

I wish they were given the permissions and also funding needed for them to carry on the amazing work they are doing.

Thankyou so much again to Tom for such a brilliant day.

Would definitely recommend a visit and will be returning

						A unique experience It was a place we had always wanted to visit and we weren’t disappointed. Clare our guide was amazing  her knowledge was extensive and her enthusiasm knew no bounds.

						Great to get underground to see the amazing tunnels Amazing wee tour. Great to be shown around told all about this amazing man and his tunnels. Well worth the trip. Guides are passionate and informative. Always happy to be asked questions (yeah sorry about that and adding more mystery) and it really is a shame that more information is hard to find. 						An engineering marvel I’m not sure any written review will ever do justice to the experience of actually setting foot in the Williamson tunnels. From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. My wife and I both live in Liverpool, and now we are retired we have more time to visit our city and a visit to Williamson tunnels was always on our list. We are so glad we have done it now. My only disappointment is that such a wonderful treasure in our city is not funded by the council or some sort of trust. It is all down to donations. Mandy passed on her local knowledge of the area and the tunnels making the trip even more enjoyable.

What the volunteers have done to discover and uncover this magical place is remarkable.  Our small group was guided through the tunnels by our friendly and knowledgeable guide Mike who coincidentally was who I had email contact with to arrange our tour.  The response to my enquiry was speedy and we were all set to go.  We continued on to an extended tour and we spent several interesting hours in total exploring the work of Mr Williamson.  I would highly recommend visiting the tunnels for a unique experience you won’t forget.

					A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! 					I enjoyed an absolutely amazing time with my fellow walkers of the St Helens Group RA when we went on an guided tour of 'Williamson Tunnels' by the 'Friends Of Williamson Tunnels' on Sunday. It was very interesting, and I will definitely go again to see how much more the volunteers have uncovered as they continue with the exploration digging they're doing, and definitely recommend anyone to go and visit and witness the remarkable sites of both the Tunnels, and remains of the former Mansion House of Williamson themselves. :)

						It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. The free tour I attended lasts approximately 1.5 - 2 hours. You visit the tunnels, but in addition, our guide Peter shared lots of important facts and information about the site and its history. All the staff are very friendly, and the work they do to continue the recovery efforts in these tunnels is admirable. I definitely recommend it!!

					Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? To be honest I expected more to be excavated than is actually the case because of the rave reviews, though the amount of Earth removed is no less impressive & the lack of progress isn’t the fault of the FoWT. Red tape is holding them up apparently. Best to see this as a work in progress. When more is excavated, no doubt the tunnels will become even more impressive.

Shrouded in mystery and full of interesting information about the area and perhaps the reasons for Master Williamson to build these tunnels. Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging,  knowledgable and down to earth!



The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

						What a wonderful place to visit. The volunteers couldn't have done enough for us. They were wonderfully patient with all the questions our children had for them. The Tunnles themselves were simply amazing, they have clearly worked tirelessly to bring them back to life. I couldn't recommend a visit enough.

This labyrinthed time capsule of history includes intrigue, craftsmanship, everyday life, and so much more. The Williamsons's House site with its lower ground sections

including the Banqueting Hall, Wine Bins, kitchen (not forgetting what the Army barracks built nearby there too) and the Paddington site with its 4 levels are all eye openers.

Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

						Wow! After having a brilliant tour with Clare around the house site,  we came back a few days later to visit the Paddington site,  this time with Chris. Both guides were very knowledgeable and both sites are well worth a visit. Its amazing the work put into making these tunnels accessible, so well done to all the volunteers! Well worth a visit if you are in Liverpool!
					
					Very cool and such a nice experience and friendly volunteers. but dissapoited we didn't actually go in willams Tunnels and went into Paddington tunnels instead but still an amazing experience and deffo worth going.

						A hidden gem among Liverpool's many treasures. We had a great experience and our guide Tom gave us a really insightful tour. 						Wonderful outing with wonderful guides who clearly have passion for the tunnels and enjoy sharing their knowledge with visitors. Learnt a surprising amount about life a century ago through the relics (i.e. trash) that have been retrieved and put on display and the stories that come with them. Highly recommend.

The many fascinating artefacts were a highlight of the tour andthis is a must-do when in Liverpool.
					
					Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.
