						Great Mystery Very interesting tour to historical Victorian tunnels. 

The guide Mandy was exceptionally informative and dedicated to the preservation of Joseph Williamson's heritage.

Remarkable tunnel building and stories of times gone by.

Will definitely visit again.
					
					Family visit We visited Williamson’s Tunnels as a family of four (two adults and two teenagers) and had a fantastic experience. The tunnels themselves are absolutely amazing and full of history, but what really made the visit special was our volunteer guide, Claire. She somehow managed to hold our teenagers’ attention for a full two hours — no small achievement! Her knowledge and enthusiasm brought the tunnels to life.



We enjoyed the visit so much that we’ll definitely be joining as members, and we’re already looking forward to booking one of the longer three-hour tours. We honestly couldn’t wait to come back.

						Family visit We visited Williamson’s Tunnels as a family of four (two adults and two teenagers) and had a fantastic experience. The tunnels themselves are absolutely amazing and full of history, but what really made the visit special was our volunteer guide, Claire. Even better, there are reckoned to be many more tunnels to discover and the team are working tirelessly to uncover them!

B) Have the Friends of Williamson Tunnels who are such a dedicated, enthusiastic, talented and resourceful team of volunteers who undertake vast amounts of work and research so that the general public can witness these structures that have been "lost" for over 150 years.

Even better, there are reckoned to be many more tunnels to discover and the team are working tirelessly to uncover them!

As far as I'm concerned, the Williamson tunnels are easily one of the best attractions in Liverpool!

						Loved the tour We had a really enjoyable afternoon visiting the tunnels - couldn’t fault it. Our guide was excellent and gave a thorough recount of the history. The volunteers are really passionate about preserving the tunnels and so they should be. Definitely will visit again with others.

					Interesting history underneath Edge Hill Really enjoyed the tour with Tom! You could tell his passion and enthusiasm for the history (and mystery) of the Williamson "tunnels". I also enjoyed that it was a small tour group which made it easy to see/hear. The tour is a bit long at 2 hours, and maybe could be condensed to max 90 minutes, but overall I enjoyed it and would encourage others to visit.

						Interesting history underneath Edge Hill Really enjoyed the tour with Tom! You could tell his passion and enthusiasm for the history (and mystery) of the Williamson "tunnels". I also enjoyed that it was a small tour group which made it easy to see/hear. Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. A special thank you to Tom for sharing his wealth of knowledge along the way.

						An amazing experience This tour is amazing and takes you deep into the tunnels below. It is a real experience and provides you with an insight into the history of the tunnels. Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. A group of 12 of us visited to explore the subterranean architectural spaces. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels organised a bespoke tour for us across 2 different sites. We looked at the banqueting hall and the cathedral like 4 story deep quarry spaces. Our tour guide was Tom, and he was so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the history and the rediscovery of the tunnels (being one of the volunteers that helped to unearth the spaces for the public) 



This would be great for anyone local and visitors to the city who want a truly Liverpool Experience.  Its damp down there and there are staircases to descend, (so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and check accessibility requirements) but this all adds to the experience!

I really wanted to know the impact on the tunnels on subsidence on local properties as the tunnels cover a large area. The tunnels are a mad idea i really wanted to know ‘why’. 



The staff were really nice and helpful. 



We did enjoy it and made a donation. But it was like watching a series and being left in a cliff hanger not knowing’why’!!!!

						Hidden historic gem A completely unique and wholly immersive experience. If you can go visit these tunnels then you definitely should, because wow! I never would have guessed such an intriguing piece of Liverpool history would be underneath an urban car park. Our guide Tom was very knowledgeable, engaging and enthusiastic.

I visited with my 7 year old son, we got a taxi from the city centre that dropped us outside. We were shocked to see a standard detached row of houses lining one side of the road. We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

					Just Go ! What can I say ? Amazing !

Access can be difficult if you have mobility issues.

						Just Go ! What can I say ? Amazing !

Access can be difficult if you have mobility issues.

Otherwise, just go, you will not be disappointed to see the amount of work that has gone in to not only creating these amazing 'caverns', but to making them and the artefacts accessible once more.
					
					A unique experience It was a place we had always wanted to visit and we weren’t disappointed. Clare our guide was amazing  her knowledge was extensive and her enthusiasm knew no bounds.

We learnt all about the philanthropist Joseph Williamson what a tremendous man, we went down to a labyrinth of tunnels, at different levels. The volunteers do a fantastic job keeping the tunnels open  amazingly not supported by Liverpool Council or the Heritage trust.

This is a project that must be supported by all to keep a unique asset for future generations ..thank you so much for our great day.

We learnt all about the philanthropist Joseph Williamson what a tremendous man, we went down to a labyrinth of tunnels, at different levels. The volunteers do a fantastic job keeping the tunnels open  amazingly not supported by Liverpool Council or the Heritage trust.

This is a project that must be supported by all to keep a unique asset for future generations ..thank you so much for our great day.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

The tunnels are such a mysterious event beneath Liverpool and Mike is a great tour guide in explaining so much history to them. So thankful for answering all my questions, too! 						Lovely, Funny, Informative I came in from Philadelphia for a couple days and I had a lovely tour with Mike! The tunnels are such a mysterious event beneath Liverpool and Mike is a great tour guide in explaining so much history to them. So thankful for answering all my questions, too! For anyone considering it, absolutely book it!

					Best day out in liverpool Wow. We had the best time. As three 21 year old girls we were not sure to expect, and it is not our usual activity, but we enjoyed ourselves immensely. 					A Grand Day Out Well, what can I say?



We came back to visit Williamson’s Tunnels in Liverpool after our last trip over 15 years ago, when we were lowered down into the tunnels in a harness on a block and tackle from above, feeling a bit like “a puppet on a string”  



This time we booked a tour and returned with some friends. As it turned out, it was just us, our friends, and Mandy, our tour guide. What a bonus that was! Mandy was absolutely brilliant—friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and great fun throughout. She really helped make the whole experience special.



We also met the rest of the team above ground and had a laugh about how much things had changed since our last visit. The work that has been done is fantastic.



Every corner seems to reveal another treasure, and the whole place is fascinating. There is so much to see and learn that the time just flew by. In fact, at one point we even ended up singing “When I’m Calling You” in one of the lower caverns to experience the acoustics!



Britain’s Got Talent, here we come  although it would definitely have to be filmed in Williamson’s Tunnels for the full effect! 



All joking aside, this was one of the best days out we’ve had in ages. A huge thank you to Mandy and everyone involved in preserving and sharing this remarkable piece of Liverpool’s history. We had an absolute ball and can’t wait to come back again.

As soon as you go underground and see the original site photos and start to hear the history of the dig you understand the massive task and achievement so far.  The tunnels are fascinating layer after layer and the array of the many items found during the dig are quite incredible and displayed beautifully .  Many of the items make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. As we entered one chamber Mike asked if anyone would like to sing to appreciate the acoustics, my husband being a Liverpool fan sang you’ll never walk alone, what a memorable experience to take away with us.  Mikes knowledge and passion for the site made our trip even more enjoyable but as he said the more answers you look for the more questions arise. Tom , our quite provided a full explanation about them and the ‘exploring’ was very interesting. No charge but a donation is gladly accepted and well worth it

						Great visit to Friends of Williamson Tunnels Having brought ex-scouser friends back to Liverpool for a couple of days I was not sure what they would make of the Williamson Tunnels friends site. They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. 						Best tour we took all weekend! Tom and Claire were super informative and very friendly hosts. They gave you adequate time to ask questions, explore and take pictures. I’d highly recommend anyone to book, whether you’re local or from outside Liverpool. Some of Liverpools lost history that has been pieced together over time and the quarry itself - wow! The FoWT aim to find the other tunnels & underground spaces and restore them to how they were originally built - you really do get the impression that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The underground spaces themselves have been painstakingly emptied of the spoil that had filled them, and have been restored to their as built condition.  The collection of items that have been removed from the tunnels when they were used as a dumping ground provides some interesting snapshots of Britain over the decades.  The FoWT aim to find the other tunnels & underground spaces and restore them to how they were originally built - you really do get the impression that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

						Fascinating experience I had long wanted to visit the tunnels so I decided to join  one of the tours as part of the Heritage Open Days. Our guide was Tom, who was very knowledgeable about the history of the tunnels. It was a fascinating experience into a lesser known part of Liverpool`s history.
					
					Wow! You need to visit this place when in Liverpool. Loved it! What an amazing bit of history. Guide was great.

						An engineering marvel I’m not sure any written review will ever do justice to the experience of actually setting foot in the Williamson tunnels. From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. 					An excellent place to spend some time learning about one of Liverpools hidden gems. This is one of Liverpools hidden gems. Me (49) my son (12) and daughter (6) throughly enjoyed this experience. 						A very interesting alternative thing to do This is an entirely volunteer-led free tour that takes you down below the streets of Liverpool to a network of underground caverns. I don't want to spoil any more of the story, as the guide will tell you about the history but the volunteers have a lot of passion and dedication and it shows!

What the volunteers have done to discover and uncover this magical place is remarkable.  Our small group was guided through the tunnels by our friendly and knowledgeable guide Mike who coincidentally was who I had email contact with to arrange our tour.  The response to my enquiry was speedy and we were all set to go.  We continued on to an extended tour and we spent several interesting hours in total exploring the work of Mr Williamson.  I would highly recommend visiting the tunnels for a unique experience you won’t forget.

						Well worth the visit We were recommended this tour by friends who had done it, and it didn’t disappoint. Your guides are not just well informed, but were the people who dug out these chambers!!!! So you are getting first-hand recounts of their discoveries, living their excitement of finding a new tunnel, or artefact - hearing it from them brings it to life.

Amazing that this exists, and has not been destroyed by city developments and new buildings.

The history behind the tunnels it’s unbelievable and the people that form the Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels are one of the kindest and lovely people I’ve ever seen. 						We visited the Paddington underground area albeit it's vaulted and resembles a tunnel, Tony informed us that it is technically a quarry. Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

						Wonderful outing with wonderful guides who clearly have passion for the tunnels and enjoy sharing their knowledge with visitors. Enter a world of smallish tunnels and cathedral sized caverns. Our guides, Tony and Tom, are enthusiastic and are eager to impart as much of their knowledge to you as possible and are ably assisted by Laura in reception. Remember to give as generous a donation as possible to help them to continue with their work of excavating more areas of the site.

					We had a lovely time at the tunnels today. Tom was very informative, friendly and encouraging to explore the little rooms there was.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.

Our great guide Mike was very knowledgeable and gave us the history not only of the tunnels origin but the rediscovery of them with first hand knowledge. All of the volunteers to were very kind and I am very thankful for their time and would highly recommend visiting the Williamson tunnels!

						Visited Williamson’s Tunnels yesterday and it was a real hidden gem.



It’s not a big, flashy attraction, but the history is fascinating - an old sandstone quarry covered over with intricate brick and sandstone arches in the early 1800s, then forgotten and filled in. What’s incredible is that everything you see today has been painstakingly uncovered by volunteers since the 1990s  - by hand, bucket by bucket.



Our guide Mike was excellent - knowledgeable, engaging, and handled a few… lively tour members with total professionalism.



The fact it’s entirely volunteer-run makes it even more impressive. They’ve clearly put years of effort into uncovering and preserving something really special, often without the level of support they deserve.

					I enjoyed an absolutely amazing time with my fellow walkers of the St Helens Group RA when we went on an guided tour of 'Williamson Tunnels' by the 'Friends Of Williamson Tunnels' on Sunday. The many of the knowledgeable volunteers have been there since the tunnels original rediscovery and they have worked constantly over 30 plus dedicated years to open more of the tunnels, bucket at a time due to limited space, a truly impressive achievement that is a fitting tribute  to the original works of the man himself. Lynn was the most amazing tour guide who has been with the project from the beginning - passionate, knowledgeable, funny and engaging and we cannot thank her enough for being so supportive of our vulnerable client group.

Lynn was the most amazing tour guide who has been with the project from the beginning - passionate, knowledgeable, funny and engaging and we cannot thank her enough for being so supportive of our vulnerable client group.



This project is run entirely by volunteers and it is quite remarkable what has been achieved in a relatively short space of time. The tour is free but donations are welcome - we were so impressed we made a donation and became members. Will definitely be back. Keep up the good work!
