					FoWT Williamson Tunnels Tour Fantastic experience. Mandy was our Guide today and she was friendly, funny and oh so knowledgeable and passionate about the known history of Williamson and his magnificent tunnels. 

The artefacts uncovered in the rubble bring to life Liverpool from times gone by. 

This was not my first visit,I like to visit annually because the experience is magical.

						FoWT Williamson Tunnels Tour Fantastic experience. Mandy was our Guide today and she was friendly, funny and oh so knowledgeable and passionate about the known history of Williamson and his magnificent tunnels.

						Bringing local history to life and exploring an underworld it's hard to believe exists What an amazing experience. Clare was our brilliant, informative guide who blended the serious with the hilarious. Incredible to think what lies beneath the streets of Liverpool that most people never see. 					Family visit at Easter Everyone really enjoyed the visit, even the teenagers they said 'it was cool'.  Impressive the work of the volunteers who have made it possible for the public to see the Williamsons Tunnels.

					Brilliant Today 4 friends visited the Williamson Tunnels and taken on our tour by Mandy?? and she was absolutely superb. I have been a few times and it is always brilliant. 						Brilliant Today 4 friends visited the Williamson Tunnels and taken on our tour by Mandy?? and she was absolutely superb. I have been a few times and it is always brilliant. Our friends said they thought it was one of the most exciting things they had done for years!!  It is really a great place to visit and thoroughly exciting so thanks to all who made it a great visit.
					
					Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! We ended up being the only people on the 12:30 tour, but our guide Tom still gave us a ‘private’ tour - he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate that the tour still went ahead.

I will probably return again in a couple of years, and see if any new evidence or tunnels have been found by then!

						Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! We ended up being the only people on the 12:30 tour, but our guide Tom still gave us a ‘private’ tour - he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate that the tour still went ahead.

I will probably return again in a couple of years, and see if any new evidence or tunnels have been found by then!

We came back to visit Williamson’s Tunnels in Liverpool after our last trip over 15 years ago, when we were lowered down into the tunnels in a harness on a block and tackle from above, feeling a bit like “a puppet on a string”  



This time we booked a tour and returned with some friends. As it turned out, it was just us, our friends, and Mandy, our tour guide. What a bonus that was! Mandy was absolutely brilliant—friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and great fun throughout. She really helped make the whole experience special.



We also met the rest of the team above ground and had a laugh about how much things had changed since our last visit. The work that has been done is fantastic.



Every corner seems to reveal another treasure, and the whole place is fascinating. There is so much to see and learn that the time just flew by. In fact, at one point we even ended up singing “When I’m Calling You” in one of the lower caverns to experience the acoustics!



Britain’s Got Talent, here we come  although it would definitely have to be filmed in Williamson’s Tunnels for the full effect! 



All joking aside, this was one of the best days out we’ve had in ages. A huge thank you to Mandy and everyone involved in preserving and sharing this remarkable piece of Liverpool’s history. We had an absolute ball and can’t wait to come back again.

						A Grand Day Out Well, what can I say?



We came back to visit Williamson’s Tunnels in Liverpool after our last trip over 15 years ago, when we were lowered down into the tunnels in a harness on a block and tackle from above, feeling a bit like “a puppet on a string”

						Superb historical excavations What a brilliant experience guided by the very knowledgeable Tom. What he doesn't know about the tunnels and the history isn't worth knowing. The tunnels themselves have been incredibly restored and the tour is very immersive.

Would highly recommend to anyone who has even a fleeting interest in history.

						Hidden historic gem A completely unique and wholly immersive experience. If you can go visit these tunnels then you definitely should, because wow! 					Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels tour I found this to be a fascinating tour and our guide Tony was very interesting to listen to as he guided us around the tunnels (quarries). 						Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels tour I found this to be a fascinating tour and our guide Tony was very interesting to listen to as he guided us around the tunnels (quarries). It was fascinating to see all of the pieces that had been reclaimed from when the tunnels were filled with Liverpool’s rubbish and hear little anecdotes about them. You need to be comfortable going up and down stairs for the tour.

						Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. All the volunteers were friendly, polite and welcoming. I won’t say too much about the tour other than you need to go and have the experience . It’s fascinating! Thank you Mike for a fantastic experience!!!!

						A unique experience It was a place we had always wanted to visit and we weren’t disappointed. Clare our guide was amazing  her knowledge was extensive and her enthusiasm knew no bounds.

We learnt all about the philanthropist Joseph Williamson what a tremendous man, we went down to a labyrinth of tunnels, at different levels. The volunteers do a fantastic job keeping the tunnels open  amazingly not supported by Liverpool Council or the Heritage trust.

This is a project that must be supported by all to keep a unique asset for future generations ..thank you so much for our great day.

I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. First thing to say is that this place is Free to visit,

The Guides are excellent and keep the tour very interesting,

We totally lost track of time here as it was so unique and interesting,

The passion and dedication of the team is obvious throughout the tour.

I highly recommend a visit if you have any type of interest in history, archaeology, engineering or urban exploration .

					Fantastic FREE Experience packed with facts from a knowledgeable volunteer A fabulous 1.5 hour experience. Packed with information and local history. A group of 12 of us visited to explore the subterranean architectural spaces. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels organised a bespoke tour for us across 2 different sites. We looked at the banqueting hall and the cathedral like 4 story deep quarry spaces. Our tour guide was Tom, and he was so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the history and the rediscovery of the tunnels (being one of the volunteers that helped to unearth the spaces for the public) 



This would be great for anyone local and visitors to the city who want a truly Liverpool Experience.  Its damp down there and there are staircases to descend, (so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and check accessibility requirements) but this all adds to the experience!

					Great time at 39 Mason Street, Edge Hill L7 3EW ! We read their good instructions to get here, and our Uber driver (£7.92 from Waterfront ) brought us to the door.

					Liverpools labyrinth The Williamson tunnels are an absolutely marvel of human engineering. A great tour showed off parts of the tunnels that run under Edge Hill in Liverpool. Well worth a visit. Run by a great team of volunteers that make it an exploration to remember.

Guides are passionate and informative. Always happy to be asked questions (yeah sorry about that and adding more mystery) and it really is a shame that more information is hard to find. Fascinating labyrinth of underground chambers and an insight to Williamsons selfless endeavours into keeping men employed.

Such hard work and dedication in revealing this history should be preserved for all to see.  I would recommend a visit and hope that they find a Patron to fight the cause so this gem is never lost.

The guide Mandy was exceptionally informative and dedicated to the preservation of Joseph Williamson's heritage.

Remarkable tunnel building and stories of times gone by.

Will definitely visit again.
					
					Fantastic experience What an amazing time we had visiting the tunnels. 

I visited with my 7 year old son, we got a taxi from the city centre that dropped us outside. We were shocked to see a standard detached row of houses lining one side of the road. We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

					We are part of a social group and we attended the Williamson tunnels as part of a group outing.

We would really recommend this tour as a fascinating and interesting tour to look into Liverpools past history.

We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.



After a brief safety talk given by Tom our group guide, we were then taken down to the first of four levels of this amazing tour.



It's hard to imagine all the hard work that the volunteers have done to get the tunnels in the condition that they are today.

It just got better the lower we went into the tunnels.

						We are part of a social group and we attended the Williamson tunnels as part of a group outing.

We would really recommend this tour as a fascinating and interesting tour to look into Liverpools past history.

We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.



After a brief safety talk given by Tom our group guide, we were then taken down to the first of four levels of this amazing tour.



It's hard to imagine all the hard work that the volunteers have done to get the tunnels in the condition that they are today.

It just got better the lower we went into the tunnels.

						What's lurking underground in Liverpool! We did'nt really know what to expect on our visit to the tunnels so we were both astounded when we were led underground! Our guide Mike had so much information to share with the group and he was happy to answer any questions.  I would highly recommend the tour to anyone, we don't come from Liverpool but if you do you should  visit here and learn what is lurking underground in your city!

					Spectacular volunteer run tours This was an unexpected gem, and the highlight of our trip to Liverpool. You can read a bit about Williamson online, but from what we know now he was quite a character. The tunnels are far more impressive than I expected. It was almost like going on a natural cave tour, except there is extremely impressive masonry everywhere. The fact that they have excavated so much, and yet still have no idea of the complete extent of the tunnels is a modern archealogical mystery. These are all volunteers doing the excavations with help from all sorts of different groups, and yet it seems that the city is blocking further excavations. Anyway, this isn't a strenuous tour at all. There are a few moderately tight places, but other than that not much to worry about. Certainly easier than most cave tours I've taken.  The tour guides are all volunteers which means they really care about the work, and are full of great stories about the excavation. The tour is completely free (but really, you should put something in the donation box to support their efforts. Even better, if you have any UK political connections, maybe put a good word in for them). 

If you want the extended version of the tour, you have to become a member of their group (cost is negligible), and you can just sign up on-site if you like. Reservations are by email (make sure to respond to their message). Make sure NOT to follow the "Williamson Tunnels" sign on the street, which goes to the tunnel society on the other side of the train tracks (also a charity organization). Just follow Google maps and you'll get there. The site is faced by the remaining brick front of Williamson's house with girders behind it. The site itself is just a couple of cargo containers (all the city will permit them to have). A real friendly group that loves what it's doing.

					An excellent place to spend some time learning about one of Liverpools hidden gems. This is one of Liverpools hidden gems. Me (49) my son (12) and daughter (6) throughly enjoyed this experience. The tunnels are a true enigmatic mystery. The guide (Mike)  is highly knowledgeable, passionate and interesting. A huge amount of credit must go to the whole team for what they’ve achieved in the last 25 years to keep this going on a shoestring budget. Compared to when I last visited this part of the tunnels in 2002, they have done SO much! The team truly embodies the Scouse spirit of hard work, grit, passion and determination. If you get chance, trust me, this is worth a visit.

It was very interesting to hear the tales about how the rubble was removed from the tunnels and look at the many artefacts that had been unearthed. Chris did well picking out interesting articles such as the Edward 7th commemorative china cup. Overall 2 hours well spent.

					A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.

The tunnels were filled in after Williamson's death, leaving the early explorers from the Friends of Williamson's Tunnels to discover many objects still intact in the rubbish; some are on display in the tunnels.

All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

It is work in progress, a visit to a spectacular archaeological dig, in a quiet back street near the city centre, manned by enthusiasts, and where you may get mud on your clothes. There were lots of stairs. I was kitted out with hard hat and high viz.



I think it deserves bus loads of visitors, but it does not get them, apparently because it is rather offbeat and not everyone appreciates dank holes in the ground. With only discerning visitors, at least the volunteer workers have more time there for further digging! It is only open on a day or two in the week, so book your visit in advance.

						Walk in the footsteps of the Mole of Edge Hill Who would have thought we would discover such a labyrinth of tunnels under the streets of Liverpool courtesy of the Friends of Williamsons Tunnels?  What the volunteers have done to discover and uncover this magical place is remarkable.  Our small group was guided through the tunnels by our friendly and knowledgeable guide Mike who coincidentally was who I had email contact with to arrange our tour.  The response to my enquiry was speedy and we were all set to go.  We continued on to an extended tour and we spent several interesting hours in total exploring the work of Mr Williamson.  I would highly recommend visiting the tunnels for a unique experience you won’t forget.

						Amazing tour with the friendliest of tour guides! Thank you all for such an amazing day out Went today with a group of friends, it was an impromptu trip out, we're all local to the area and to find such a hidden gem so close to home is unbelievable , our tour Guide Tom was very thorough and really give us a great experience of the tunnels! I will 100% be back and sharing the experience with other friends and family as this is just such a good day out and the people doing the tours are all so friendly and welcoming.

						Best tour we took all weekend! Tom and Claire were super informative and very friendly hosts. They gave you adequate time to ask questions, explore and take pictures. I’d highly recommend anyone to book, whether you’re local or from outside Liverpool. Some of Liverpools lost history that has been pieced together over time and the quarry itself - wow! 					Highly recommended Having arrived promptly for our scheduled tour at the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre we were very disappointed to discover that our booking slot hadn't been registered despite e mail confirmation. We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. 						Highly recommended Having arrived promptly for our scheduled tour at the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre we were very disappointed to discover that our booking slot hadn't been registered despite e mail confirmation. We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. 					What an amazing place! A group of 24 of us went today. We were made very welcome. Our guides were enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. The whole place was fascinating. There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. Just bear in mind that you are going underground and there are steps and uneven surfaces. There are 2 separate sections to visit. We were there for atleast 2 and a half hours. There's also a little shop if you want to buy souvenirs.

						A super visit-again. Decided to suprise my brother in law with a visit to to see the tunnels. He visits from derbyshire, and loves Liverpool, as their is always something to see and do.

					What an intriguing place. Well worth a visit 😁👍 What an amazing little discovery I thought to myself as we walked up the road to the entrance from the car park, our first fantastic host telling us the history of the Joseph Williamson and the tunnels discovery.



Right from the get go, going down those first few steps underground this place captivated my imagination. It's like something out of a book. It's so fascinating to see and hear the history of these odd spaces, all whilst being stood inside them deep underground on some unassuming street in Liverpool. 



Definitely worth a visit or three. Great guys that run the place who are all volunteer. The work that has gone into excavating and rediscovering these spaces is incredible. 



Go visit and see for yourself, this allows the FOWT to keep finding more of this incredible story.

						What an intriguing place. Well worth a visit 😁👍 What an amazing little discovery I thought to myself as we walked up the road to the entrance from the car park, our first fantastic host telling us the history of the Joseph Williamson and the tunnels discovery.



Right from the get go, going down those first few steps underground this place captivated my imagination. It's like something out of a book. It's so fascinating to see and hear the history of these odd spaces, all whilst being stood inside them deep underground on some unassuming street in Liverpool. 



Definitely worth a visit or three. Great guys that run the place who are all volunteer. The work that has gone into excavating and rediscovering these spaces is incredible. 



Go visit and see for yourself, this allows the FOWT to keep finding more of this incredible story.

When you drive in, it looks like there isn't anything there, so it's quite a shock once you go underground. What a feat of engineering and vision. 						An engineering marvel I’m not sure any written review will ever do justice to the experience of actually setting foot in the Williamson tunnels. From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. My wife and I both live in Liverpool, and now we are retired we have more time to visit our city and a visit to Williamson tunnels was always on our list. We are so glad we have done it now. My only disappointment is that such a wonderful treasure in our city is not funded by the council or some sort of trust. It is all down to donations. This labyrinthed time capsule of history includes intrigue, craftsmanship, everyday life, and so much more. The Williamsons's House site with its lower ground sections

including the Banqueting Hall, Wine Bins, kitchen (not forgetting what the Army barracks built nearby there too) and the Paddington site with its 4 levels are all eye openers.



I became a member straight away and here's looking forward to assisting in the future with further digging and assistance.

The underground spaces themselves have been painstakingly emptied of the spoil that had filled them, and have been restored to their as built condition.  The collection of items that have been removed from the tunnels when they were used as a dumping ground provides some interesting snapshots of Britain over the decades.  The FoWT aim to find the other tunnels & underground spaces and restore them to how they were originally built - you really do get the impression that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

						This is a fascinating place to visit as part of Liverpools heritage.  At first glance you may think what is this place as on the surface it may not seem too attractive, but the magic of the experience is to be found underground. 						Wonderful outing with wonderful guides who clearly have passion for the tunnels and enjoy sharing their knowledge with visitors. 					This tour has to be experienced to be believed. The deepest and most original site of the Williamson excavations with the massive banqueting hall deep enough for a whole house in itself. The many of the knowledgeable volunteers have been there since the tunnels original rediscovery and they have worked constantly over 30 plus dedicated years to open more of the tunnels, bucket at a time due to limited space, a truly impressive achievement that is a fitting tribute  to the original works of the man himself. A unique experience of a unique part of Liverpool history. This should be visited by everyone, I know I will be back again.

The many of the knowledgeable volunteers have been there since the tunnels original rediscovery and they have worked constantly over 30 plus dedicated years to open more of the tunnels, bucket at a time due to limited space, a truly impressive achievement that is a fitting tribute  to the original works of the man himself. A unique experience of a unique part of Liverpool history. This should be visited by everyone, I know I will be back again.

Best to book online in advance on the Friends website. The standard tours are free, although if you join as a member (£5) there is an extended tour available. This extended part was in my opinion even better than the first part & definitely worth it. Allow 3 hours for both tours & maybe consider going for breakfast/brunch beforehand, as your lunch will be quite late afterwards. There are some steps & the floor is uneven, so wear sensible shoes. I managed also to get some dirty marks on my jeans somehow… dark trousers not a bad idea

Best to book online in advance on the Friends website. The standard tours are free, although if you join as a member (£5) there is an extended tour available. This extended part was in my opinion even better than the first part & definitely worth it. Allow 3 hours for both tours & maybe consider going for breakfast/brunch beforehand, as your lunch will be quite late afterwards. There are some steps & the floor is uneven, so wear sensible shoes. 					It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. 					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

There is a lot of stairs and close spaces.  Hi-vis jackets and hard hats are provided before the tour starts.  You are advised to wear flat shoes and waterproof jacket as it can get wet and slippy (depending the time of year).



Friends of Joseph Williamson is run by volunteers and enthusiastic historians.  The tour is completely free but the group relies heavily on donations for work to continue on.  Booking is necessary and they are only open on Wednesdays and Sundays.

There is a lot of stairs and close spaces.  Hi-vis jackets and hard hats are provided before the tour starts.  You are advised to wear flat shoes and waterproof jacket as it can get wet and slippy (depending the time of year).



Friends of Joseph Williamson is run by volunteers and enthusiastic historians.  The tour is completely free but the group relies heavily on donations for work to continue on.  Booking is necessary and they are only open on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Enter a world of smallish tunnels and cathedral sized caverns. Our guides, Tony and Tom, are enthusiastic and are eager to impart as much of their knowledge to you as possible and are ably assisted by Laura in reception. Remember to give as generous a donation as possible to help them to continue with their work of excavating more areas of the site.

						I enjoyed an absolutely amazing time with my fellow walkers of the St Helens Group RA when we went on an guided tour of 'Williamson Tunnels' by the 'Friends Of Williamson Tunnels' on Sunday. It was very interesting, and I will definitely go again to see how much more the volunteers have uncovered as they continue with the exploration digging they're doing, and definitely recommend anyone to go and visit and witness the remarkable sites of both the Tunnels, and remains of the former Mansion House of Williamson themselves. :)

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.
