					Fascinating! Had a fantastic visit here - Mike, our guide, was knowledgeable, engaging and gave us an excellent insight into the tunnels despite the lack of solid historical information.  The underground spaces themselves have been painstakingly emptied of the spoil that had filled them, and have been restored to their as built condition.  The collection of items that have been removed from the tunnels when they were used as a dumping ground provides some interesting snapshots of Britain over the decades.  The FoWT aim to find the other tunnels & underground spaces and restore them to how they were originally built - you really do get the impression that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

						Fascinating experience I had long wanted to visit the tunnels so I decided to join  one of the tours as part of the Heritage Open Days. Our guide was Tom, who was very knowledgeable about the history of the tunnels. It was a fascinating experience into a lesser known part of Liverpool`s history.
					
					Guided tour of the Williamson Tunnels Went to the tunnels with two friends, the staff were very helpful and friendly. There were 7 of us in the tour group, our tour guide was a lady called Mandy who was very helpful and knowledgeable, took her time to fully explain things, and to point different things out to the group on our walk around.

I and my 2 friends really enjoyed the visit and the tour, in fact we joined the Friends of Williamson society

						Guided tour of the Williamson Tunnels Went to the tunnels with two friends, the staff were very helpful and friendly. There were 7 of us in the tour group, our tour guide was a lady called Mandy who was very helpful and knowledgeable, took her time to fully explain things, and to point different things out to the group on our walk around.

I and my 2 friends really enjoyed the visit and the tour, in fact we joined the Friends of Williamson society

						Excellent experience, would highly recommend We visited with my 2 young sons (5 & 12 years old) along with my elderly father, we all had a wonderful time and the tour was expertly delivered by our guide Mike. The size and depth of the site is breathtaking and the amount of work undertaken by the team to excavate the site difficult to comprehend. 						Amazing tour with the friendliest of tour guides! Thank you all for such an amazing day out Went today with a group of friends, it was an impromptu trip out, we're all local to the area and to find such a hidden gem so close to home is unbelievable , our tour Guide Tom was very thorough and really give us a great experience of the tunnels! I will 100% be back and sharing the experience with other friends and family as this is just such a good day out and the people doing the tours are all so friendly and welcoming.

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

I wish they were given the permissions and also funding needed for them to carry on the amazing work they are doing.

						Amazing experience We went on a tour of the Williamson tunnels today and it was absolutely amazing. There was only the 2 of us with our tour guide, Tom, and he was so friendly and really informative, he really knew his stuff!

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

I wish they were given the permissions and also funding needed for them to carry on the amazing work they are doing.

						Bringing local history to life and exploring an underworld it's hard to believe exists What an amazing experience. Clare was our brilliant, informative guide who blended the serious with the hilarious. Incredible to think what lies beneath the streets of Liverpool that most people never see. 					Well Worth A Visit If you are ever in Liverpool, you should really try to visit this amazing attraction.   The tunnels themselves are breath taking, with a remarkable history.   

However, I really need to praise the volunteers running the tours.  They were so friendly and welcoming.   Unlike many commercial attractions, we were not hurried and made to feel at home instantly. I came all the way from London for the day to visit it, and felt that it was well worth the journey.

All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

As soon as you go underground and see the original site photos and start to hear the history of the dig you understand the massive task and achievement so far.  The tunnels are fascinating layer after layer and the array of the many items found during the dig are quite incredible and displayed beautifully .  Many of the items make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. As we entered one chamber Mike asked if anyone would like to sing to appreciate the acoustics, my husband being a Liverpool fan sang you’ll never walk alone, what a memorable experience to take away with us. 						Extended tour I had a fantastic time at the tunnel, I felt very welcome, and was given a lot of interesting information. I would definitely recommend taking a trip here and becoming a member to ensure these tunnels stay open for all to see.

						Brilliant Today 4 friends visited the Williamson Tunnels and taken on our tour by Mandy?? and she was absolutely superb. I have been a few times and it is always brilliant. Our friends said they thought it was one of the most exciting things they had done for years!! This time we booked a tour and returned with some friends. As it turned out, it was just us, our friends, and Mandy, our tour guide. What a bonus that was! Mandy was absolutely brilliant—friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and great fun throughout. She really helped make the whole experience special.



We also met the rest of the team above ground and had a laugh about how much things had changed since our last visit. The work that has been done is fantastic.



Every corner seems to reveal another treasure, and the whole place is fascinating. There is so much to see and learn that the time just flew by. In fact, at one point we even ended up singing “When I’m Calling You” in one of the lower caverns to experience the acoustics!



Britain’s Got Talent, here we come  although it would definitely have to be filmed in Williamson’s Tunnels for the full effect!

						Definitely worth a visit! We had a thoroughly enjoyable tour of the tunnels with our guide Tom. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the history and layout of the tunnels, having been one of the people who worked hard excavating on the site.  The volunteers make you feel very welcome and I would highly recommend this tour. In fact this is my second visit!
					
					Lovely little afternoon out learning about such a fascinating topic. We (3 adults) came along not knowing what to expect. All the volunteers and staff were very welcoming from arrival. Tony our guide was very informative and passionate about the tunnels. We found the experience extremely interesting.

						A very interesting alternative thing to do This is an entirely volunteer-led free tour that takes you down below the streets of Liverpool to a network of underground caverns. I don't want to spoil any more of the story, as the guide will tell you about the history but the volunteers have a lot of passion and dedication and it shows!
					
					Well worth a visit and great team of knowledgeable volunteers. These hardworking volunteers give up precious time and are so passionate and dedicated to their role and it was very much appreciated. Really interesting, honest and informative. 						An engineering marvel I’m not sure any written review will ever do justice to the experience of actually setting foot in the Williamson tunnels. From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. My wife and I both live in Liverpool, and now we are retired we have more time to visit our city and a visit to Williamson tunnels was always on our list. We are so glad we have done it now. 						Wonderful visit. 						A worthwhile trip when in Liverpool! After our 30 min walk to the Williamson Tunnels (from the central) at first we thought ‘what lies beneath here?’. Well, a lot of history and facts! Tom, our guide, was very passionate and great at story telling. Friendly and welcoming, any questions asked were answered! Would recommend!
					
					Fantastic experience What an amazing time we had visiting the tunnels. 

I visited with my 7 year old son, we got a taxi from the city centre that dropped us outside. We were shocked to see a standard detached row of houses lining one side of the road. We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

The tunnels are a true enigmatic mystery. The guide (Mike)  is highly knowledgeable, passionate and interesting. A huge amount of credit must go to the whole team for what they’ve achieved in the last 25 years to keep this going on a shoestring budget. Compared to when I last visited this part of the tunnels in 2002, they have done SO much! The team truly embodies the Scouse spirit of hard work, grit, passion and determination. If you get chance, trust me, this is worth a visit.

						An excellent place to spend some time learning about one of Liverpools hidden gems. This is one of Liverpools hidden gems. Me (49) my son (12) and daughter (6) throughly enjoyed this experience. The tunnels are a true enigmatic mystery. The guide (Mike)  is highly knowledgeable, passionate and interesting. 						You must visit the Tunnels Great bunch of people, good banter ( we were in Liverpool after all) . The tour by Chris was very informative and for me one of the the measures of a good trip is that I learned something, which I did. When you drive in, it looks like there isn't anything there, so it's quite a shock once you go underground. What a feat of engineering and vision. Highly recommend the tour and can only hope that the Heritage Centre can get saved. Too many sites in the city have been dismissed by city Councils. We have an amazing history and it should all be celebrated, including Mr Williamson.

They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. The very favourable impressions were augmented by the verve with which our guide, Mandy, explained everything from the layout to the articles found during excavation. All in all a very enjoyable visit.

The team have applied to English Heritage for a listing which will help them receive Local Authority permission to expand their area of excavation. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels enterprise is a charity with all the excavation work and ensuring  site safety  and visitors tours being done by local volunteers.. It relies on local donations from visitors to keep going. Hopefully they will be successful in attracting Lottery funding in the future. 



I strongly recommend a visit to see the great work the team are doing.

We did the extended tour of the tunnels and really enjoyed our visit. I’d highly recommend anyone to book, whether you’re local or from outside Liverpool. Some of Liverpools lost history that has been pieced together over time and the quarry itself - wow! 					Spectacular volunteer run tours This was an unexpected gem, and the highlight of our trip to Liverpool. You can read a bit about Williamson online, but from what we know now he was quite a character. The tunnels are far more impressive than I expected. It was almost like going on a natural cave tour, except there is extremely impressive masonry everywhere. The fact that they have excavated so much, and yet still have no idea of the complete extent of the tunnels is a modern archealogical mystery. These are all volunteers doing the excavations with help from all sorts of different groups, and yet it seems that the city is blocking further excavations. Anyway, this isn't a strenuous tour at all. There are a few moderately tight places, but other than that not much to worry about. Certainly easier than most cave tours I've taken.  The tour guides are all volunteers which means they really care about the work, and are full of great stories about the excavation. The tour is completely free (but really, you should put something in the donation box to support their efforts. Even better, if you have any UK political connections, maybe put a good word in for them). 

If you want the extended version of the tour, you have to become a member of their group (cost is negligible), and you can just sign up on-site if you like. Reservations are by email (make sure to respond to their message). Make sure NOT to follow the "Williamson Tunnels" sign on the street, which goes to the tunnel society on the other side of the train tracks (also a charity organization). Just follow Google maps and you'll get there. The site is faced by the remaining brick front of Williamson's house with girders behind it. The site itself is just a couple of cargo containers (all the city will permit them to have). A real friendly group that loves what it's doing.

						Walk in the footsteps of the Mole of Edge Hill Who would have thought we would discover such a labyrinth of tunnels under the streets of Liverpool courtesy of the Friends of Williamsons Tunnels? I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.



The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool.

After a friendly welcome and a safety briefing, Phil, an experienced guide, led us into Liverpool’s underground world. 						A fascinating insight into a long-forgotten history Inspired by a television report, I visited the Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels. After a friendly welcome and a safety briefing, Phil, an experienced guide, led us into Liverpool’s underground world. The construction, scale, and history of the tunnels, as well as the numerous artefacts from long-forgotten times, were just as impressive as the enthusiasm of the volunteers who are dedicated to preserving and further exploring this historic heritage. Highly recommended!

						Unique experience We really enjoyed the tunnels and experience. This is run by enthusiastic volunteers so not a polished commercial experience. It was fascinating to go underground and see the huge tunnels and the artifacts.

					This tour has to be experienced to be believed. The deepest and most original site of the Williamson excavations with the massive banqueting hall deep enough for a whole house in itself. The many of the knowledgeable volunteers have been there since the tunnels original rediscovery and they have worked constantly over 30 plus dedicated years to open more of the tunnels, bucket at a time due to limited space, a truly impressive achievement that is a fitting tribute  to the original works of the man himself. A unique experience of a unique part of Liverpool history. This should be visited by everyone, I know I will be back again.

					I enjoyed an absolutely amazing time with my fellow walkers of the St Helens Group RA when we went on an guided tour of 'Williamson Tunnels' by the 'Friends Of Williamson Tunnels' on Sunday. It was very interesting, and I will definitely go again to see how much more the volunteers have uncovered as they continue with the exploration digging they're doing, and definitely recommend anyone to go and visit and witness the remarkable sites of both the Tunnels, and remains of the former Mansion House of Williamson themselves. :)

						Possibly the most jaw dropping oldest and weirdest sight or attraction you'll ever see in Liverpool, the guys here dig all these tunnels out at weekends volunteers all, they've won all kinds of awards now and rightly so, fantastic insight into old Liverpool if you only visit one place in the city make sure this is it.
					
					Cannot recommend this tour highly enough whether you are a local or a visitor of the city.



Lynn was the most amazing tour guide who has been with the project from the beginning - passionate, knowledgeable, funny and engaging and we cannot thank her enough for being so supportive of our vulnerable client group.



This project is run entirely by volunteers and it is quite remarkable what has been achieved in a relatively short space of time. The tour is free but donations are welcome - we were so impressed we made a donation and became members. Will definitely be back. Keep up the good work!

						Cannot recommend this tour highly enough whether you are a local or a visitor of the city.



Lynn was the most amazing tour guide who has been with the project from the beginning - passionate, knowledgeable, funny and engaging and we cannot thank her enough for being so supportive of our vulnerable client group.



This project is run entirely by volunteers and it is quite remarkable what has been achieved in a relatively short space of time. The tour is free but donations are welcome - we were so impressed we made a donation and became members. Will definitely be back. Keep up the good work!

					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

						This is a fantastic tour around one of the most fascinating places in Liverpool. 					Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? 					It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. The free tour I attended lasts approximately 1.5 - 2 hours. You visit the tunnels, but in addition, our guide Peter shared lots of important facts and information about the site and its history. All the staff are very friendly, and the work they do to continue the recovery efforts in these tunnels is admirable. I definitely recommend it!!

At first glance you may think what is this place as on the surface it may not seem too attractive, but the magic of the experience is to be found underground. 						If you come to visit Liverpool or you already live here this activity is a must you should experience at least once. The history behind the tunnels it’s unbelievable and the people that form the Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels are one of the kindest and lovely people I’ve ever seen. They’ll explain with incredible detail the history and go through all the different chambers and tunnels Williamson built. Overall an amazing experience to learn a bit more of Liverool’s history.

						A hidden gem among Liverpool's many treasures. We had a great experience and our guide Tom gave us a really insightful tour. The dedication of the volunteers to keeping this part of Liverpool's history alive is amazing and I wish them all the best in their future endeavours. Definitely a highlight of our trip!
					
					We had a lovely time at the tunnels today. Tom was very informative, friendly and encouraging to explore the little rooms there was.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

They were absolutely fascinating and our guide (Mandy) had just the right amount of information to keep us interested and intrigued. We paid a very small fee to become Friends of the Williamson Tunnels and hope to pay a return visit pretty soon (yes, they're that interesting!)

Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.
