						Fascinating and enjoyable experience! A fascinating and enjoyable tour of the Williamson Tunnels. Our guide Mike was friendly, knowledgeable, and really brought the history to life! We loved the experience and would definitely recommend it — we can’t wait to come back!
					
					A very interesting alternative thing to do This is an entirely volunteer-led free tour that takes you down below the streets of Liverpool to a network of underground caverns. 						A very interesting alternative thing to do This is an entirely volunteer-led free tour that takes you down below the streets of Liverpool to a network of underground caverns. I don't want to spoil any more of the story, as the guide will tell you about the history but the volunteers have a lot of passion and dedication and it shows!

						Fascinating tour The tour of Williamson's tunnels was absolutely fascinating. Our tour guide (Clare) was fantastic and all of the volunteers we met were really friendly and enthusiastic. Thank you for a great experience and we would love to come back to do the tour of Williamson's house.
					
					Fantastic FREE Experience packed with facts from a knowledgeable volunteer A fabulous 1.5 hour experience. Packed with information and local history. A group of 12 of us visited to explore the subterranean architectural spaces. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels organised a bespoke tour for us across 2 different sites. We looked at the banqueting hall and the cathedral like 4 story deep quarry spaces. Our tour guide was Tom, and he was so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the history and the rediscovery of the tunnels (being one of the volunteers that helped to unearth the spaces for the public) 



This would be great for anyone local and visitors to the city who want a truly Liverpool Experience.  Its damp down there and there are staircases to descend, (so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and check accessibility requirements) but this all adds to the experience! 



The Friends of WT do all of this FOR FREE (!)

						Great morning, a real alternative to traditional sites. This was such an interesting trip. Peter was our guide, bear in mind they are all volunteers, he was full of inormation, looked to answer all questions and was really engaging. Who knew what goes on beneath the streets?
					
					Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! We ended up being the only people on the 12:30 tour, but our guide Tom still gave us a ‘private’ tour - he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate that the tour still went ahead.

I will probably return again in a couple of years, and see if any new evidence or tunnels have been found by then!

I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! 						Lovely, Funny, Informative I came in from Philadelphia for a couple days and I had a lovely tour with Mike! The tunnels are such a mysterious event beneath Liverpool and Mike is a great tour guide in explaining so much history to them. So thankful for answering all my questions, too! 						Fascinating This was a fascinating insight into the history of the tunnels and the man behind their construction. 



Our guide, Tony, was full of interesting information on both counts and encouraged further investigation. He clearly knew his subject well.



Well worth a visit.
					
					Lovely experience It was a lovely tour, and very suprising also as we had no former knowledge of how large the cave system actually is.  Really glad we went to see it after living next to them for a year. Would recommend!

						A great and memorable visit Great tour and very informative about what could be considered a hidden jewel in Liverpool. 					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

My gosh she was so knowledgeable and fun, throwing in lots of little stories about the tunnels but also snippets of historical information on Liverpool itself. When you drive in, it looks like there isn't anything there, so it's quite a shock once you go underground. What a feat of engineering and vision. Highly recommend the tour and can only hope that the Heritage Centre can get saved. Too many sites in the city have been dismissed by city Councils. We have an amazing history and it should all be celebrated, including Mr Williamson.

I hope the council gives them to permission to excavate more tunnels soon!
					
					What's lurking underground in Liverpool! We did'nt really know what to expect on our visit to the tunnels so we were both astounded when we were led underground! Our guide Mike had so much information to share with the group and he was happy to answer any questions. 						What's lurking underground in Liverpool! We did'nt really know what to expect on our visit to the tunnels so we were both astounded when we were led underground! Our guide Mike had so much information to share with the group and he was happy to answer any questions.  I would highly recommend the tour to anyone, we don't come from Liverpool but if you do you should  visit here and learn what is lurking underground in your city!

					Walk in the footsteps of the Mole of Edge Hill Who would have thought we would discover such a labyrinth of tunnels under the streets of Liverpool courtesy of the Friends of Williamsons Tunnels? 						Walk in the footsteps of the Mole of Edge Hill Who would have thought we would discover such a labyrinth of tunnels under the streets of Liverpool courtesy of the Friends of Williamsons Tunnels?  What the volunteers have done to discover and uncover this magical place is remarkable. With history, stories and speculation about  the purpose of the subterranean tunnels, caverns, brick arches and passages. The volunteers were friendly and welcoming.  Tom, our guide was enthusiastic and  knowledgeable.  You can tell he loves what he does, he made the tour engaging.  Highly recommended.

						Well worth a visit and great team of knowledgeable volunteers. These hardworking volunteers give up precious time and are so passionate and dedicated to their role and it was very much appreciated. Really interesting, honest and informative. This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. The amount of discarded artifacts from the Victorian era onwards was fascinating. Well done to all involved. We even discovered that my wife is related to William Boote, the grocer who occupied several of the Williamson buildings!

Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

						Liverpools labyrinth The Williamson tunnels are an absolutely marvel of human engineering. A great tour showed off parts of the tunnels that run under Edge Hill in Liverpool. Well worth a visit. Run by a great team of volunteers that make it an exploration to remember.

						Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels tour I found this to be a fascinating tour and our guide Tony was very interesting to listen to as he guided us around the tunnels (quarries). It was fascinating to see all of the pieces that had been reclaimed from when the tunnels were filled with Liverpool’s rubbish and hear little anecdotes about them. 					The tunnels that aren’t tunnels at all! Fascinating place to visit.  All the more so as it still has many secrets left to give up.  Nowhere else like it.  Highly recommended.  Look forward to visiting again and exploring further..

						Amazing Williamson Tunnels What a great trip. Truly fascinating site with a mix of history and engineering. Our guide Mike was very informative and there were kids on the tour and they found it interesting too.

					Amazing experience We went on a tour of the Williamson tunnels today and it was absolutely amazing. There was only the 2 of us with our tour guide, Tom, and he was so friendly and really informative, he really knew his stuff!

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

I wish they were given the permissions and also funding needed for them to carry on the amazing work they are doing.

Thankyou so much again to Tom for such a brilliant day.

Would definitely recommend a visit and will be returning

					What a gem! Tucked away in Edge Hill, Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels brings Joseph Williamson’s eccentric 19th-century underground world vividly to life. A passionate team of volunteers has painstakingly excavated and restored vaults, passageways and vast chambers, and they tell the story brilliantly. Our guide, Chris, took his time, answered every question, and made the labyrinth feel both mysterious and human. We spent about 2–2.5 hours below ground and didn’t feel bored for a second.



A few extras that make it special: these tunnels were dug in the early 1800s and their purpose is still debated—employment for the poor, quarry backfill, or sheer eccentricity—but the result is spectacular, including the so-called “Banqueting Hall”, a dramatic vaulted space deep beneath Mason Street. FoWT has been uncovering and preserving this network since the 1990s, entirely volunteer-led, which makes the quality of the tour even more impressive. Entry is free; donations are welcomed and very well used when you see what’s been achieved. Enter a world of smallish tunnels and cathedral sized caverns. Our guides, Tony and Tom, are enthusiastic and are eager to impart as much of their knowledge to you as possible and are ably assisted by Laura in reception. Remember to give as generous a donation as possible to help them to continue with their work of excavating more areas of the site.

Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

					I enjoyed an absolutely amazing time with my fellow walkers of the St Helens Group RA when we went on an guided tour of 'Williamson Tunnels' by the 'Friends Of Williamson Tunnels' on Sunday. It was very interesting, and I will definitely go again to see how much more the volunteers have uncovered as they continue with the exploration digging they're doing, and definitely recommend anyone to go and visit and witness the remarkable sites of both the Tunnels, and remains of the former Mansion House of Williamson themselves. :)

The many of the knowledgeable volunteers have been there since the tunnels original rediscovery and they have worked constantly over 30 plus dedicated years to open more of the tunnels, bucket at a time due to limited space, a truly impressive achievement that is a fitting tribute  to the original works of the man himself. A unique experience of a unique part of Liverpool history. This should be visited by everyone, I know I will be back again.

						This is a fascinating place to visit as part of Liverpools heritage.  At first glance you may think what is this place as on the surface it may not seem too attractive, but the magic of the experience is to be found underground. With the history of how they excavated it and what they found, I was captivated for the whole tour, led by Lynn, who was a great guide. 😁

					Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? To be honest I expected more to be excavated than is actually the case because of the rave reviews, though the amount of Earth removed is no less impressive & the lack of progress isn’t the fault of the FoWT. Red tape is holding them up apparently. Best to see this as a work in progress. When more is excavated, no doubt the tunnels will become even more impressive.

It's very impressive that the volunteers excavated the tunnels and hopefully they will be able to carry on the fabulous work and uncover more tunnels in the future.

					Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.

					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Best to book online in advance on the Friends website. The standard tours are free, although if you join as a member (£5) there is an extended tour available. 					We had a lovely time at the tunnels today. Tom was very informative, friendly and encouraging to explore the little rooms there was.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

Gained alot of knowledge, very excited to do more research and learn more about the elusive mole of Liverpool.
