					Amazing guided tunnel tour! Absolutely loved exploring these tunnels! We had an amazing tour guide named Mike who didn’t leave out a detail when telling us about the history of the tunnels. 100% recommend for all ages!

					What an amazing place! A group of 24 of us went today. We were made very welcome. Our guides were enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. The whole place was fascinating. There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. Just bear in mind that you are going underground and there are steps and uneven surfaces. There are 2 separate sections to visit. We were there for atleast 2 and a half hours. There's also a little shop if you want to buy souvenirs.

						What an amazing place! A group of 24 of us went today. We were made very welcome. Our guides were enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. The whole place was fascinating. There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. 						Fascinating tour The tour of Williamson's tunnels was absolutely fascinating. Our tour guide (Clare) was fantastic and all of the volunteers we met were really friendly and enthusiastic. Thank you for a great experience and we would love to come back to do the tour of Williamson's house.
					
					A hidden gem A most enjoyable couple of hours at Friends of Williamsons Tunnels  on Madon Street. The tour was led my Tom an informative guide and active member.

Fascinating labyrinth of underground chambers and an insight to Williamsons selfless endeavours into keeping men employed.

						Informative tour I spent a fascinating few hours on a tour of the Paddington chambers and then Joseph Williamson's House. Tom is an enthusiastic and well informed guide. I'd been planning to visit for some time and delighted I finally got there. Well worth a visit.

						Amazing! Totally intriguing and a real privilege to walk through the accessible tunnels.  Mike was excellent (and very patient!) as our guide and shared many stories and theories as we ventured through all 4 levels of the tunnels.  Let's hope they are able to keep digging to allow us all to see more!

					Really interesting visit, worth seeing Fascinating to see these tunnels and all the artefacts found when clearing them out.  Also fascinating to hear about the very eccentric Joseph Williamson.

Our guide, Clare, was a passionate volunteer who has been involved in exploring and clearing out these tunnels for many many years.

FoWT do not have a slick visitor centre - just a portakabin (and a portaloo) - but the volunteers are clearly very knowledgeable, experienced and passionate enough to give their time for free tours.

						Really interesting visit, worth seeing Fascinating to see these tunnels and all the artefacts found when clearing them out.  Also fascinating to hear about the very eccentric Joseph Williamson.

Our guide, Clare, was a passionate volunteer who has been involved in exploring and clearing out these tunnels for many many years.

FoWT do not have a slick visitor centre - just a portakabin (and a portaloo) - but the volunteers are clearly very knowledgeable, experienced and passionate enough to give their time for free tours.

						Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. All the volunteers were friendly, polite and welcoming. I won’t say too much about the tour other than you need to go and have the experience . It’s fascinating! Thank you Mike for a fantastic experience!!!!

I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! The team have applied to English Heritage for a listing which will help them receive Local Authority permission to expand their area of excavation. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels enterprise is a charity with all the excavation work and ensuring  site safety  and visitors tours being done by local volunteers.. Our guide Mike had so much information to share with the group and he was happy to answer any questions. This is not some polished visitor attraction, but rather a living, breathing ongoing archaeology project run by enthusiastic and very knowledgeable volunteers.  I didn't have time to explore all the tunnels on this visit, but I will definitely be back for more.  It's free to visit, and although I joined the Friends and made a donation, there's absolutely no pressure to do so.

						🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Not to be missed Gem of an experience and one not to be missed. Mike was a fantastic Guide and had been involved with FOWT for many years involved in the clearances which enabled him to share many anecdotes which further illuminated the fascinating history of the project. 

Williamson was a fascinating character and I look forward to returning and touring more of the tunnels. 

It’s surprising the City Council & Universities aren’t more actively involved in this incredible excavation project and discovering more about the social and economic history of the local community

						Lovely, Funny, Informative I came in from Philadelphia for a couple days and I had a lovely tour with Mike! The tunnels are such a mysterious event beneath Liverpool and Mike is a great tour guide in explaining so much history to them. So thankful for answering all my questions, too! For anyone considering it, absolutely book it!

						Amazing Williamson Tunnels What a great trip. Truly fascinating site with a mix of history and engineering. Our guide Mike was very informative and there were kids on the tour and they found it interesting too.

					Brilliant Experience What a fantastic thing to experience! I've lived near Liverpool for nearly 30 years, and never knew there was something like this lying below the city. Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.



The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool. 



Tours are free, but you can leave a donation at the end. 



It's best to book as far in advance as is possible, especially during summer peak season.

						Brilliant Experience What a fantastic thing to experience! I've lived near Liverpool for nearly 30 years, and never knew there was something like this lying below the city. Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. 					Hidden Gem! Literally! What a fascinating visit!  This really is Liverpool's little hidden gem!

Our guide Chris was both entertaining and informative.   His explanations really brought the history to life.

The final steps to the lowest level defeated me! However,  it was still possible to see and hear all about that area, from above.

					Passionate Volunteers Make This Place Exceptional - A Must Visit! Such a unique and personalised experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history, caves, community, or simply something wonderfully quirky. We were only visiting for a weekend and the tours were initially sold out; however, Mike was incredibly helpful. As soon as a cancellation came through, he informed us immediately and we were able to secure our places.

The tour is delivered either by one of the founders or by those who took part in the excavations themselves, meaning the knowledge shared is rich, personal, and engaging no matter how many times you visit. We were able to ask numerous questions, and at the end we even met almost the entire team who have been working there voluntarily for decades.

I truly loved it and deeply admire the dedication of this community in preserving the heritage and stories of the past for future generations.

I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history, caves, community, or simply something wonderfully quirky. The tour is delivered either by one of the founders or by those who took part in the excavations themselves, meaning the knowledge shared is rich, personal, and engaging no matter how many times you visit. We were able to ask numerous questions, and at the end we even met almost the entire team who have been working there voluntarily for decades.

I truly loved it and deeply admire the dedication of this community in preserving the heritage and stories of the past for future generations.

						Well Worth A Visit If you are ever in Liverpool, you should really try to visit this amazing attraction.   The tunnels themselves are breath taking, with a remarkable history.   

However, I really need to praise the volunteers running the tours.  They were so friendly and welcoming.   Unlike many commercial attractions, we were not hurried and made to feel at home instantly. You need to be comfortable going up and down stairs for the tour.
					
					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

					Amazing tour with the friendliest of tour guides! Thank you all for such an amazing day out Went today with a group of friends, it was an impromptu trip out, we're all local to the area and to find such a hidden gem so close to home is unbelievable , our tour Guide Tom was very thorough and really give us a great experience of the tunnels! 						Amazing tour with the friendliest of tour guides! 					An amazing experience This tour is amazing and takes you deep into the tunnels below. It is a real experience and provides you with an insight into the history of the tunnels. Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. 						An amazing experience This tour is amazing and takes you deep into the tunnels below. It is a real experience and provides you with an insight into the history of the tunnels. Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. The amount of discarded artifacts from the Victorian era onwards was fascinating. Well done to all involved. Our guide Chris was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic.  He didn't reveal all the information at first and that made it all the more intriguing. Absolutely fascinating tour. The volunteers are to be commended for their work and commitment. Will definitely visit again to see more.

						Interesting experience Excellent experience - from the warm welcome to the knowledgable guide about the tunnels and its treasures, it really was a fab experience. Thanks to Mandy for being an excellent tour guide!
					
					Highly recommended Having arrived promptly for our scheduled tour at the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre we were very disappointed to discover that our booking slot hadn't been registered despite e mail confirmation. We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. Massive thanks to to Mike and the team.

						Highly recommended Having arrived promptly for our scheduled tour at the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre we were very disappointed to discover that our booking slot hadn't been registered despite e mail confirmation. We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. Massive thanks to to Mike and the team.

					Amazing tour with dedicated volunteers Tom and the other volunteers made us feel so welcome! The tunnels and caverns are so fascinating, and it's wonderful that the volunteers have put their heart and souls into excavating the tunnels and keeping the whole thing alive for visitors to experience. Tom was so knowledgable, he was able to answer so many of our questions. We highly recommend this tour! Do allow for a bit more than an hour though, as we were there for longer in the end.

					One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. 						Super visit to Williamson Tunnels by Chester U3A A superb visit to the Williamson Tunnels by the Industrial Heritage group from Chester U3A. A great welcome and organisation and the guides were excellent and so enthusiastic. Even provided an extra person to help one of our members who suffers from Parkinsons. 

The visit itself is highly recommended, not only for the tunnels but the amazing artefacts on display.

We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

						Great morning, a real alternative to traditional sites. This was such an interesting trip. Peter was our guide, bear in mind they are all volunteers, he was full of inormation, looked to answer all questions and was really engaging. Who knew what goes on beneath the streets?

The Guides are excellent and keep the tour very interesting,

We totally lost track of time here as it was so unique and interesting,

The passion and dedication of the team is obvious throughout the tour.

					My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm.



Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging,  knowledgable and down to earth!



The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging,  knowledgable and down to earth!



The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

						Possibly the most jaw dropping oldest and weirdest sight or attraction you'll ever see in Liverpool, the guys here dig all these tunnels out at weekends volunteers all, they've won all kinds of awards now and rightly so, fantastic insight into old Liverpool if you only visit one place in the city make sure this is it.

Mike was our tour guide and very knowledgeable and so enthusiastic, took us deep down to the Paddington Williamson tunnel site, let us explored together when and how to discover, protect this amazing heritage. Let us learned more about the history and the details of every corner inside the tunnel. Our guide, Chris, took his time, answered every question, and made the labyrinth feel both mysterious and human. We spent about 2–2.5 hours below ground and didn’t feel bored for a second.

						Visited Williamson’s Tunnels yesterday and it was a real hidden gem.



It’s not a big, flashy attraction, but the history is fascinating - an old sandstone quarry covered over with intricate brick and sandstone arches in the early 1800s, then forgotten and filled in. What’s incredible is that everything you see today has been painstakingly uncovered by volunteers since the 1990s  - by hand, bucket by bucket.



Our guide Mike was excellent - knowledgeable, engaging, and handled a few… lively tour members with total professionalism.

					Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

FoWT do not have a slick visitor centre - just a portakabin (and a portaloo) - but the volunteers are clearly very knowledgeable, experienced and passionate enough to give their time for free tours.

						what a treat! i went in with 0 expectations and was blown away by every part of this tour. the knowledge of our tour guide, Mandy, was unmatched, she was so friendly and funny and informative i had no questions at the end of the tour. this really was a delightful tour of a massively understated part of liverpools history and the work the friends of williamsons tunnels have done has saved a very important part of history from being lost to time. thank you for a wonderful tour Mandy.

					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. 						Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

Shrouded in mystery and full of interesting information about the area and perhaps the reasons for Master Williamson to build these tunnels. The work done by the volunteers to save this important historical site is absolutely wonderful. I recommend anyone interested in local history and how folk lived around the Napoleanic wars and after, should not miss this tour  when visiting Liverpool. 						Wonderful outing with wonderful guides who clearly have passion for the tunnels and enjoy sharing their knowledge with visitors. Learnt a surprising amount about life a century ago through the relics (i.e. trash) that have been retrieved and put on display and the stories that come with them. Highly recommend.

						My friend and I went to look around ‘the tunnels’, Tom was our fantastic guide. His knowledge and story telling explained how the tunnel were found and explored. 					I enjoyed an absolutely amazing time with my fellow walkers of the St Helens Group RA when we went on an guided tour of 'Williamson Tunnels' by the 'Friends Of Williamson Tunnels' on Sunday. It was very interesting, and I will definitely go again to see how much more the volunteers have uncovered as they continue with the exploration digging they're doing, and definitely recommend anyone to go and visit and witness the remarkable sites of both the Tunnels, and remains of the former Mansion House of Williamson themselves. :)

Enter a world of smallish tunnels and cathedral sized caverns. Our guides, Tony and Tom, are enthusiastic and are eager to impart as much of their knowledge to you as possible and are ably assisted by Laura in reception. Remember to give as generous a donation as possible to help them to continue with their work of excavating more areas of the site.
