					Excellent history tour at the Williamson tunnels!! Such history and pure enthusiasm from all the volunteers that run the Williamson tunnels! Excellent communication with booking! Clare was our tour guide and was a pleasure, had so much knowledge and love for the history. Would recommend all who visit Liverpool and want to know the interesting history.

						Excellent history tour at the Williamson tunnels!! Such history and pure enthusiasm from all the volunteers that run the Williamson tunnels! Excellent communication with booking! Clare was our tour guide and was a pleasure, had so much knowledge and love for the history. Would recommend all who visit Liverpool and want to know the interesting history.
					
					Well worth the visit We were recommended this tour by friends who had done it, and it didn’t disappoint. We had a great guide in Richard who was enthusiastic and brought to life the story of this mysterious network of tunnels and the man who’d created them. 						Well worth the visit We were recommended this tour by friends who had done it, and it didn’t disappoint. We had a great guide in Richard who was enthusiastic and brought to life the story of this mysterious network of tunnels and the man who’d created them. This is a hidden gem and deserves to be shouted about.
					
					We are part of a social group and we attended the Williamson tunnels as part of a group outing.

						We are part of a social group and we attended the Williamson tunnels as part of a group outing.

We would really recommend this tour as a fascinating and interesting tour to look into Liverpools past history.

We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.

It was a very interesting visit, and we can certainly recommend.

Tom was our guide, who explained very thoroughly about the tunnels.

It’s a free tour lasting a good two hours, but we felt it was worth a generous donation at the end .

						Just Go ! What can I say ? Amazing !

Access can be difficult if you have mobility issues.

						Great to get underground to see the amazing tunnels Amazing wee tour. Great to be shown around told all about this amazing man and his tunnels. Well worth the trip. Guides are passionate and informative. Always happy to be asked questions (yeah sorry about that and adding more mystery) and it really is a shame that more information is hard to find. 					The best thing to see in Liverpool This is truly an amazing experience, to go down these tunnels, which no one is quite sure why they are there is brilliant. 

Why Williamson decided to build all these tunnels all over the place and at different depths is a mystery. But, it makes it an absolute ‘must do’ if your in Liverpool. 

I hope they get the funding and the permissions to dig more, I love this hidden quirky history of our country.

						The best thing to see in Liverpool This is truly an amazing experience, to go down these tunnels, which no one is quite sure why they are there is brilliant. 

Why Williamson decided to build all these tunnels all over the place and at different depths is a mystery. But, it makes it an absolute ‘must do’ if your in Liverpool.

						Informative tour I spent a fascinating few hours on a tour of the Paddington chambers and then Joseph Williamson's House. Tom is an enthusiastic and well informed guide. I'd been planning to visit for some time and delighted I finally got there. Well worth a visit.

					Fascinating experience beneath your feet Visited the tunnels on Sunday lunchtime as a family with two teenagers. Excellent communication from the volunteers beforehand to book the visit and to find it on the day which was straightforward. 



Mike was our tour guide on the day and was excellent, clearly passionate about volunteering on the project to unearth more of these amazing tunnels. He was full of knowledge and shared as much as he could answering all the questions the group had. 



It’s such an unusual experience to walk along a road in Liverpool knowing there is a huge void beneath your feet  and then seconds later climb down to see it for yourselves.



The tour lasted for about two hours and was structured really well, revealing more of the tunnels and the history as you go.



What the group of volunteers have achieved in discovering and digging out these tunnels bucket by bucket is amazing.

					Great and informative City History. Amazing trip today with 14 members of the Boys Brigade from within the Liverpool Battalion.

It’s amazing when you find out so much more than you knew about our own city.

It’s amazing when you find out so much more than you knew about our own city.

Tour was well run with informative guides and are a credit to what should be a Listed Site of Major Historical Importance.

					Very interesting and great value. We decided to take out a friends of the tunnels membership so we could do the extended tour of the house and we are very glad we did. It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. There are quite a few steps, which was fine for us, but worth mentioning for anyone who struggles with mobility.

						Very interesting and great value. We decided to take out a friends of the tunnels membership so we could do the extended tour of the house and we are very glad we did. It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. There are quite a few steps, which was fine for us, but worth mentioning for anyone who struggles with mobility.
					
					A history lesson on Joseph Williamson, a really interesting character. Fascinating.

Staff friendly and helpful and Tony who took us on our tour really knew his stuff.

						An absolute gem An absolutely must visit. Well beyond our expectations.

The tour took approximately 2hrs  so much information and mystery around the tunnels. 

If you don’t go then you really are missing out.

					Underground chambers in Edge Hill We booked this visit as a "something to do" before having a reunion lunch with more friends, and it was a great choice. Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

						Underground chambers in Edge Hill We booked this visit as a "something to do" before having a reunion lunch with more friends, and it was a great choice. Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. Recently visited the tunnels with a group of friends and received a warm welcome from our guides Mandy and Clare who throughout our visit, were very knowledgable, and patient and all delivered with a great sense of humour. Recently visited the tunnels with a group of friends and received a warm welcome from our guides Mandy and Clare who throughout our visit, were very knowledgable, and patient and all delivered with a great sense of humour. Our small group all felt that our tour had opened their eyes not only about the work that the Friends continue to do , but also a rare insight  into a part of Livepools historical social history which is often overlooked. I cannot recommend visiting this place enough.

As soon as a cancellation came through, he informed us immediately and we were able to secure our places.

We were able to ask numerous questions, and at the end we even met almost the entire team who have been working there voluntarily for decades.

					Memorable, enjoyable, and I want to go back for more! I had no idea what to expect, but my visit into the Williamson Tunnels on Mason Street far exceeded any expectations. We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

						Going Underground in Liverpool My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm. 



Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging,  knowledgable and down to earth! 



The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

						A worthwhile trip when in Liverpool! After our 30 min walk to the Williamson Tunnels (from the central) at first we thought ‘what lies beneath here?’. Well, a lot of history and facts! 					A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.

Being from Liverpool, a visit to tunnels is something I’d wanted to do for a long time and it was lovely to see people from as far as the US in our group of 11. 					Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. All the volunteers were friendly, polite and welcoming. I won’t say too much about the tour other than you need to go and have the experience . It’s fascinating! Thank you Mike for a fantastic experience!!!!

						Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. All the volunteers were friendly, polite and welcoming. I won’t say too much about the tour other than you need to go and have the experience . It’s fascinating! The tunnels and caverns are so fascinating, and it's wonderful that the volunteers have put their heart and souls into excavating the tunnels and keeping the whole thing alive for visitors to experience. 						Amazing tour with dedicated volunteers Tom and the other volunteers made us feel so welcome! The tunnels and caverns are so fascinating, and it's wonderful that the volunteers have put their heart and souls into excavating the tunnels and keeping the whole thing alive for visitors to experience. Tom was so knowledgable, he was able to answer so many of our questions. We highly recommend this tour! Do allow for a bit more than an hour though, as we were there for longer in the end.

						What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. Due to the size of the groups, it's a really intimate experience that allows you to ask all the questions you can think of. My guide, Chris, was so helpful and knowledgeable about the tunnels. I left knowing more and having seen some truly fantastic things! So grateful for the FoWT for running this and sharing their knwoledge and love of the tunnels.
					
					Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.

					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. 					what a treat! i went in with 0 expectations and was blown away by every part of this tour. the knowledge of our tour guide, Mandy, was unmatched, she was so friendly and funny and informative i had no questions at the end of the tour. this really was a delightful tour of a massively understated part of liverpools history and the work the friends of williamsons tunnels have done has saved a very important part of history from being lost to time. thank you for a wonderful tour Mandy.

					Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? To be honest I expected more to be excavated than is actually the case because of the rave reviews, though the amount of Earth removed is no less impressive & the lack of progress isn’t the fault of the FoWT. Red tape is holding them up apparently. Best to see this as a work in progress. When more is excavated, no doubt the tunnels will become even more impressive.

It was very interesting, and I will definitely go again to see how much more the volunteers have uncovered as they continue with the exploration digging they're doing, and definitely recommend anyone to go and visit and witness the remarkable sites of both the Tunnels, and remains of the former Mansion House of Williamson themselves. :)

It was very interesting, and I will definitely go again to see how much more the volunteers have uncovered as they continue with the exploration digging they're doing, and definitely recommend anyone to go and visit and witness the remarkable sites of both the Tunnels, and remains of the former Mansion House of Williamson themselves. :)
					
					This is a fascinating place to visit as part of Liverpools heritage.  At first glance you may think what is this place as on the surface it may not seem too attractive, but the magic of the experience is to be found underground. With the history of how they excavated it and what they found, I was captivated for the whole tour, led by Lynn, who was a great guide. 😁

						This is a fascinating place to visit as part of Liverpools heritage.  At first glance you may think what is this place as on the surface it may not seem too attractive, but the magic of the experience is to be found underground. With the history of how they excavated it and what they found, I was captivated for the whole tour, led by Lynn, who was a great guide. 😁
					
					It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. The free tour I attended lasts approximately 1.5 - 2 hours. You visit the tunnels, but in addition, our guide Peter shared lots of important facts and information about the site and its history. All the staff are very friendly, and the work they do to continue the recovery efforts in these tunnels is admirable. I definitely recommend it!!

					We had a lovely time at the tunnels today. Tom was very informative, friendly and encouraging to explore the little rooms there was.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

This labyrinthed time capsule of history includes intrigue, craftsmanship, everyday life, and so much more. The Williamsons's House site with its lower ground sections

including the Banqueting Hall, Wine Bins, kitchen (not forgetting what the Army barracks built nearby there too) and the Paddington site with its 4 levels are all eye openers.



I became a member straight away and here's looking forward to assisting in the future with further digging and assistance.

						Absolutely amazing. Been on my to do list for a very long time and finally got to visit yesterday.



This labyrinthed time capsule of history includes intrigue, craftsmanship, everyday life, and so much more. The Williamsons's House site with its lower ground sections

including the Banqueting Hall, Wine Bins, kitchen (not forgetting what the Army barracks built nearby there too) and the Paddington site with its 4 levels are all eye openers.



I became a member straight away and here's looking forward to assisting in the future with further digging and assistance.

					5 of our family went to view the cellulars it was our first time and it was absolutely brilliant our guid Tom was very knowledgeable and told us loads of interesting facts we travelled down over 65 feet below ground down to the bass of the cellulars interesting artifacts every were glass bottles jugs pipes beer bottles you must visit its free as well. just give what you can to help and support you are under no obligation to give money

						We visited the Paddington underground area albeit it's vaulted and resembles a tunnel, Tony informed us that it is technically a quarry. Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.
