					Fascinating experience into the underground world created by Williamson Fascinating experience into the underground world created by Williamson. Having seen the tunnels on various TV shows, our guide, Mike, gave a captivating tour with stories from his years of tunnelling on the site as a volunteer, and interesting details of the variety of artifacts found. This is a working site, with new tunnels and spaces still being discovered. Well worth a visit - and we will be returning to see their progress from time to time.

					An extremely interesting visit, full of facts about the tunnels and the history behind it all. Highly recommended Another excellent visit. We first visited in 2014 and to visit today were amazed at the vast difference which had taken place. The volunteers that undertake all this work should be applauded and congratulated on what they have achieved. Highly recommend you to visit. 						An extremely interesting visit, full of facts about the tunnels and the history behind it all. Highly recommended Another excellent visit. We first visited in 2014 and to visit today were amazed at the vast difference which had taken place. The volunteers that undertake all this work should be applauded and congratulated on what they have achieved. Highly recommend you to visit. A special shout out to our guide Mike for the tour, so knowledgeable and passionate about the site which gives an added pleasure to hearing about the history.
					
					Great tour full of information A friend booked for a group of us to do this, we are all locals but knew very little about the tunnels except that they existed. Turned up not knowing what to expect but the staff were all so friendly and lovely, full of knowledge and you can tell its a passion of theirs. Our guide Tom was great and gave us so much information and had a laugh with us. After the tour we went back to the unit and collected our things from the lockers and gave our high vis and hard hats back, will 100% be back with family members. 						Great tour full of information A friend booked for a group of us to do this, we are all locals but knew very little about the tunnels except that they existed. Our guide Tom was great and gave us so much information and had a laugh with us. 						Amazing Williamson Tunnels What a great trip. Truly fascinating site with a mix of history and engineering. Our guide Mike was very informative and there were kids on the tour and they found it interesting too.

					Fantastic FREE Experience packed with facts from a knowledgeable volunteer A fabulous 1.5 hour experience. Packed with information and local history. A group of 12 of us visited to explore the subterranean architectural spaces. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels organised a bespoke tour for us across 2 different sites. We looked at the banqueting hall and the cathedral like 4 story deep quarry spaces. Our tour guide was Tom, and he was so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the history and the rediscovery of the tunnels (being one of the volunteers that helped to unearth the spaces for the public) 



This would be great for anyone local and visitors to the city who want a truly Liverpool Experience.  Its damp down there and there are staircases to descend, (so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and check accessibility requirements) but this all adds to the experience!

This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. A special thank you to Tom for sharing his wealth of knowledge along the way.

						An amazing experience This tour is amazing and takes you deep into the tunnels below. It is a real experience and provides you with an insight into the history of the tunnels. Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. 						Family visit We visited Williamson’s Tunnels as a family of four (two adults and two teenagers) and had a fantastic experience. The tunnels themselves are absolutely amazing and full of history, but what really made the visit special was our volunteer guide, Claire. 						Great visit to Friends of Williamson Tunnels Having brought ex-scouser friends back to Liverpool for a couple of days I was not sure what they would make of the Williamson Tunnels friends site. They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. The very favourable impressions were augmented by the verve with which our guide, Mandy, explained everything from the layout to the articles found during excavation. 						Superb historical excavations What a brilliant experience guided by the very knowledgeable Tom. What he doesn't know about the tunnels and the history isn't worth knowing. We only experienced the Paddington excavation which is probably less than one tenth of the whole system. Will definitely be booking on the main tour. The amount of discarded artifacts from the Victorian era onwards was fascinating. Well done to all involved. We even discovered that my wife is related to William Boote, the grocer who occupied several of the Williamson buildings!

The Guides are excellent and keep the tour very interesting,

We totally lost track of time here as it was so unique and interesting,

The passion and dedication of the team is obvious throughout the tour.

First thing to say is that this place is Free to visit,

The Guides are excellent and keep the tour very interesting,

We totally lost track of time here as it was so unique and interesting,

The passion and dedication of the team is obvious throughout the tour.

I highly recommend a visit if you have any type of interest in history, archaeology, engineering or urban exploration .

The tunnels themselves are so interesting but what  makes this organisation is the intrepid group of subterranean explorers who run it. Our guide was Tom, who was one of the excavators of the space we visited, and his passion was absolutely contagious. The tour overran, we were so busy talking, but the time flew by. 						Highly recommended!! Wow what an amazing experience  we had at FOIWT.. My son and I visited and are already planning  to visit again soon.

						One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. Firstly we were welcomed by the volunteer guides and offered tea/coffee and biscuits. Everyone was friendly. The tour was amazing and our guide spent time answering all our questions. We were given loads of time to see everything. I would highly recommend that visitors become members and book the full tour. 						100% recommend I wholeheartedly recommend this experience. It will be unforgettable. With the help of Tony and Laura I saw Liverpool in a different way. From my point of view it was a 100% experience.  Words cannot fully describe this experience, until you see it with your own eyes and enjoy it.
					
					What an amazing place! A group of 24 of us went today. We were made very welcome. Our guides were enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. The whole place was fascinating. There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. Just bear in mind that you are going underground and there are steps and uneven surfaces. There are 2 separate sections to visit. We were there for atleast 2 and a half hours. There's also a little shop if you want to buy souvenirs.

						Liverpools labyrinth The Williamson tunnels are an absolutely marvel of human engineering. A great tour showed off parts of the tunnels that run under Edge Hill in Liverpool. Well worth a visit. Run by a great team of volunteers that make it an exploration to remember.

						What's lurking underground in Liverpool! We did'nt really know what to expect on our visit to the tunnels so we were both astounded when we were led underground! Our guide Mike had so much information to share with the group and he was happy to answer any questions.  I would highly recommend the tour to anyone, we don't come from Liverpool but if you do you should  visit here and learn what is lurking underground in your city!
					
					An intriguing Liverpool city centre historical oddity for the adventurous visitor I had a long visit with an expert guide (shorter ones are available) and I found it a most exciting and absolutely fascinating glimpse of somewhere which is highly unusual and remains a bit of an enigma. I came all the way from London for the day to visit it, and felt that it was well worth the journey.



But it may not suit everyone. This is not the sort of attraction with silken ropes, interactive video, fridge magnets and 5 star loos. It is work in progress, a visit to a spectacular archaeological dig, in a quiet back street near the city centre, manned by enthusiasts, and where you may get mud on your clothes. There were lots of stairs. I was kitted out with hard hat and high viz.



I think it deserves bus loads of visitors, but it does not get them, apparently because it is rather offbeat and not everyone appreciates dank holes in the ground. With only discerning visitors, at least the volunteer workers have more time there for further digging! It is only open on a day or two in the week, so book your visit in advance.

Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging,  knowledgable and down to earth!

					Brilliant Experience What a fantastic thing to experience! I've lived near Liverpool for nearly 30 years, and never knew there was something like this lying below the city. Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.

It was very interesting to hear the tales about how the rubble was removed from the tunnels and look at the many artefacts that had been unearthed. I visited with my 7 year old son, we got a taxi from the city centre that dropped us outside. We were shocked to see a standard detached row of houses lining one side of the road. We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

					Highly recommended Having arrived promptly for our scheduled tour at the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre we were very disappointed to discover that our booking slot hadn't been registered despite e mail confirmation. We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. 						History below Liverpool When visiting places always like to do something different. As such booked Williamsons Tunnels in advance and was not disappointed. Tom , our quite provided a full explanation about them and the ‘exploring’ was very interesting. No charge but a donation is gladly accepted and well worth it
					
					Underground chambers in Edge Hill We booked this visit as a "something to do" before having a reunion lunch with more friends, and it was a great choice. Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

						You must visit the Tunnels Great bunch of people, good banter ( we were in Liverpool after all) . The tour by Chris was very informative and for me one of the the measures of a good trip is that I learned something, which I did. Chris really knew his stuff, how to lead a tour and was  very safety conscious. Really good experience

						Wonderful visit. 						Fascinating experience I had long wanted to visit the tunnels so I decided to join  one of the tours as part of the Heritage Open Days. Our guide was Tom, who was very knowledgeable about the history of the tunnels. It was a fascinating experience into a lesser known part of Liverpool`s history.
					
					A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.

The tunnels were filled in after Williamson's death, leaving the early explorers from the Friends of Williamson's Tunnels to discover many objects still intact in the rubbish; some are on display in the tunnels.

All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

					FOWT As part of our 50th anniversary weekend we decided to visit FOWT. From the first inquiry Mike arranged to fit us into a very busy schedule. As soon as you go underground and see the original site photos and start to hear the history of the dig you understand the massive task and achievement so far.  The tunnels are fascinating layer after layer and the array of the many items found during the dig are quite incredible and displayed beautifully .  Many of the items make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. As we entered one chamber Mike asked if anyone would like to sing to appreciate the acoustics, my husband being a Liverpool fan sang you’ll never walk alone, what a memorable experience to take away with us.  Mikes knowledge and passion for the site made our trip even more enjoyable but as he said the more answers you look for the more questions arise.  Best wishes to Mike and all FOWT for future digs and possibly some answers.  I would highly recommend a visit whether you are a tourist or like us from Liverpool to discover some of the secrets of our wonderful city.

From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. My wife and I both live in Liverpool, and now we are retired we have more time to visit our city and a visit to Williamson tunnels was always on our list. We are so glad we have done it now. My only disappointment is that such a wonderful treasure in our city is not funded by the council or some sort of trust. It is all down to donations. Mandy passed on her local knowledge of the area and the tunnels making the trip even more enjoyable.

We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.

						Great to get underground to see the amazing tunnels Amazing wee tour. Great to be shown around told all about this amazing man and his tunnels. Well worth the trip. (I'm at a loss why there is not more positive support and assistance).  This is a unique part of the city's history.  There is just so much more to be explored.  

Our guide Chris was both entertaining and informative.   His explanations really brought the history to life.

The final steps to the lowest level defeated me! However,  it was still possible to see and hear all about that area, from above.

					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

						A quirky fascinating tour A quirky and fascinating tour.  The tour offers a glimpse of the mysterious world of Joseph Williamson. With history, stories and speculation about  the purpose of the subterranean tunnels, caverns, brick arches and passages. The volunteers were friendly and welcoming.  Tom, our guide was enthusiastic and  knowledgeable.  You can tell he loves what he does, he made the tour engaging.  Highly recommended.

Being from Liverpool, a visit to tunnels is something I’d wanted to do for a long time and it was lovely to see people from as far as the US in our group of 11. 					It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. The free tour I attended lasts approximately 1.5 - 2 hours. You visit the tunnels, but in addition, our guide Peter shared lots of important facts and information about the site and its history. All the staff are very friendly, and the work they do to continue the recovery efforts in these tunnels is admirable. I definitely recommend it!!

This labyrinthed time capsule of history includes intrigue, craftsmanship, everyday life, and so much more. The Williamsons's House site with its lower ground sections

including the Banqueting Hall, Wine Bins, kitchen (not forgetting what the Army barracks built nearby there too) and the Paddington site with its 4 levels are all eye openers.

						Brilliant little tour, both guides were really informative, enthusiastic and answered all questions. Wonderfully quirky experience, very much enjoyed it. Gained alot of knowledge, very excited to do more research and learn more about the elusive mole of Liverpool. 					Such a unique and personalised experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history, caves, community, or simply something wonderfully quirky. We were only visiting for a weekend and the tours were initially sold out; however, Mike was incredibly helpful. As soon as a cancellation came through, he informed us immediately and we were able to secure our places.

The tour is delivered either by one of the founders or by those who took part in the excavations themselves, meaning the knowledge shared is rich, personal, and engaging no matter how many times you visit. We were able to ask numerous questions, and at the end we even met almost the entire team who have been working there voluntarily for decades.

I truly loved it and deeply admire the dedication of this community in preserving the heritage and stories of the past for future generations.

						Cannot recommend this tour highly enough whether you are a local or a visitor of the city.



Lynn was the most amazing tour guide who has been with the project from the beginning - passionate, knowledgeable, funny and engaging and we cannot thank her enough for being so supportive of our vulnerable client group.



This project is run entirely by volunteers and it is quite remarkable what has been achieved in a relatively short space of time. The tour is free but donations are welcome - we were so impressed we made a donation and became members. Will definitely be back. Keep up the good work!
					
					Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

						Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

						What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. Our great guide Mike was very knowledgeable and gave us the history not only of the tunnels origin but the rediscovery of them with first hand knowledge. They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. 						5 of our family went to view the cellulars it was our first time and it was absolutely brilliant our guid Tom was very knowledgeable and told us loads of interesting facts we travelled down over 65 feet below ground down to the bass of the cellulars interesting artifacts every were glass bottles jugs pipes beer bottles you must visit its free as well. just give what you can to help and support you are under no obligation to give money

Shrouded in mystery and full of interesting information about the area and perhaps the reasons for Master Williamson to build these tunnels. The work done by the volunteers to save this important historical site is absolutely wonderful. I recommend anyone interested in local history and how folk lived around the Napoleanic wars and after, should not miss this tour  when visiting Liverpool. 					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

						Firstly WOW! What a amazing testimony to Liverpools Heritage,  this group of founders including  really are a wonderful, insightful and friendly bunch.

						Wonderful outing with wonderful guides who clearly have passion for the tunnels and enjoy sharing their knowledge with visitors. It was very interesting, and I will definitely go again to see how much more the volunteers have uncovered as they continue with the exploration digging they're doing, and definitely recommend anyone to go and visit and witness the remarkable sites of both the Tunnels, and remains of the former Mansion House of Williamson themselves. :)

It was very interesting, and I will definitely go again to see how much more the volunteers have uncovered as they continue with the exploration digging they're doing, and definitely recommend anyone to go and visit and witness the remarkable sites of both the Tunnels, and remains of the former Mansion House of Williamson themselves. :)

Our guide, Chris, took his time, answered every question, and made the labyrinth feel both mysterious and human. We spent about 2–2.5 hours below ground and didn’t feel bored for a second.



A few extras that make it special: these tunnels were dug in the early 1800s and their purpose is still debated—employment for the poor, quarry backfill, or sheer eccentricity—but the result is spectacular, including the so-called “Banqueting Hall”, a dramatic vaulted space deep beneath Mason Street. FoWT has been uncovering and preserving this network since the 1990s, entirely volunteer-led, which makes the quality of the tour even more impressive. Entry is free; donations are welcomed and very well used when you see what’s been achieved. Tip: book ahead for their Wednesday/Sunday tours, wear sturdy shoes, and don’t forget to put your pin on the visitors’ map near the free coffee and hot cocoa.
