					A Grand Day Out Well, what can I say?



We came back to visit Williamson’s Tunnels in Liverpool after our last trip over 15 years ago, when we were lowered down into the tunnels in a harness on a block and tackle from above, feeling a bit like “a puppet on a string”  



This time we booked a tour and returned with some friends. As it turned out, it was just us, our friends, and Mandy, our tour guide. What a bonus that was! Mandy was absolutely brilliant—friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and great fun throughout. She really helped make the whole experience special.



We also met the rest of the team above ground and had a laugh about how much things had changed since our last visit. The work that has been done is fantastic.



Every corner seems to reveal another treasure, and the whole place is fascinating. There is so much to see and learn that the time just flew by. In fact, at one point we even ended up singing “When I’m Calling You” in one of the lower caverns to experience the acoustics!



Britain’s Got Talent, here we come  although it would definitely have to be filmed in Williamson’s Tunnels for the full effect! 



All joking aside, this was one of the best days out we’ve had in ages. A huge thank you to Mandy and everyone involved in preserving and sharing this remarkable piece of Liverpool’s history. We had an absolute ball and can’t wait to come back again.

					Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! 						Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! We ended up being the only people on the 12:30 tour, but our guide Tom still gave us a ‘private’ tour - he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate that the tour still went ahead.

						Hidden historic gem A completely unique and wholly immersive experience. If you can go visit these tunnels then you definitely should, because wow! I never would have guessed such an intriguing piece of Liverpool history would be underneath an urban car park. Our guide Tom was very knowledgeable, engaging and enthusiastic.

						Amazing tour with the friendliest of tour guides! Thank you all for such an amazing day out Went today with a group of friends, it was an impromptu trip out, we're all local to the area and to find such a hidden gem so close to home is unbelievable , our tour Guide Tom was very thorough and really give us a great experience of the tunnels! I will 100% be back and sharing the experience with other friends and family as this is just such a good day out and the people doing the tours are all so friendly and welcoming.

						Passionate Volunteers Make This Place Exceptional - A Must Visit! Such a unique and personalised experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history, caves, community, or simply something wonderfully quirky. We were only visiting for a weekend and the tours were initially sold out; however, Mike was incredibly helpful. As soon as a cancellation came through, he informed us immediately and we were able to secure our places.

						Well Worth A Visit If you are ever in Liverpool, you should really try to visit this amazing attraction.   The tunnels themselves are breath taking, with a remarkable history.

						We are part of a social group and we attended the Williamson tunnels as part of a group outing.

We would really recommend this tour as a fascinating and interesting tour to look into Liverpools past history.

We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.

We loved seeing the tunnels themselves, the remains of his home and all the little pieces of life back then that had been left behind and later uncovered. 

Our guide Claire was amazing, interesting and engaging as well as absolutely lovely. We had a blast, we will be back another time for sure. We left with more questions than answers!

The visit was booked as part of my partner’s birthday trip, I knew he’d love it as it’s such a unique place steeped in history and intrigue. 

It’s a fascinating look back in time to a really interesting & eccentric local philanthropist, the King of Edge Hill,  Joseph Williamson.

We loved seeing the tunnels themselves, the remains of his home and all the little pieces of life back then that had been left behind and later uncovered. 

Our guide Claire was amazing, interesting and engaging as well as absolutely lovely. We had a blast, we will be back another time for sure. We left with more questions than answers!

					Great and informative City History. Amazing trip today with 14 members of the Boys Brigade from within the Liverpool Battalion.

It’s amazing when you find out so much more than you knew about our own city.

Tour was well run with informative guides and are a credit to what should be a Listed Site of Major Historical Importance.

Should be better funded so that the volunteers can do more exploration and add to the wealth of history they have already discovered.

						Great and informative City History. Amazing trip today with 14 members of the Boys Brigade from within the Liverpool Battalion.

It’s amazing when you find out so much more than you knew about our own city.

Tour was well run with informative guides and are a credit to what should be a Listed Site of Major Historical Importance.

Should be better funded so that the volunteers can do more exploration and add to the wealth of history they have already discovered.

					Great time at 39 Mason Street, Edge Hill L7 3EW ! We read their good instructions to get here, and our Uber driver (£7.92 from Waterfront ) brought us to the door.

We had to wait for others who DID NOT READ the message properly!!



It was a very interesting visit, and we can certainly recommend.

Tom was our guide, who explained very thoroughly about the tunnels.

						Great time at 39 Mason Street, Edge Hill L7 3EW ! We read their good instructions to get here, and our Uber driver (£7.92 from Waterfront ) brought us to the door.

We had to wait for others who DID NOT READ the message properly!!



It was a very interesting visit, and we can certainly recommend.

Tom was our guide, who explained very thoroughly about the tunnels.

It’s a free tour lasting a good two hours, but we felt it was worth a generous donation at the end .

Being from Liverpool, a visit to tunnels is something I’d wanted to do for a long time and it was lovely to see people from as far as the US in our group of 11. The underground spaces themselves have been painstakingly emptied of the spoil that had filled them, and have been restored to their as built condition. 					Fantastic experience What an amazing time we had visiting the tunnels. 

I visited with my 7 year old son, we got a taxi from the city centre that dropped us outside. We were shocked to see a standard detached row of houses lining one side of the road. We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road. 

We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!) 

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time. 

Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

					A visit to these amazing tunnels is a must if you're visiting Liverpool - but do book early! A deceptively plain entrance leads you into an amazing world of subterranean wonder! Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.

The tunnels were filled in after Williamson's death, leaving the early explorers from the Friends of Williamson's Tunnels to discover many objects still intact in the rubbish; some are on display in the tunnels.

All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

She made the tour both informative and enjoyable, with just the right balance of stories and facts. It was a real pleasure to learn so much in such an engaging way. 						Amazing I had a wonderful time on the tour today! Clare was an excellent guide, friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the history she was sharing. 					A unique experience It was a place we had always wanted to visit and we weren’t disappointed. Clare our guide was amazing  her knowledge was extensive and her enthusiasm knew no bounds.

When you drive in, it looks like there isn't anything there, so it's quite a shock once you go underground. What a feat of engineering and vision. 					An intriguing Liverpool city centre historical oddity for the adventurous visitor I had a long visit with an expert guide (shorter ones are available) and I found it a most exciting and absolutely fascinating glimpse of somewhere which is highly unusual and remains a bit of an enigma. I came all the way from London for the day to visit it, and felt that it was well worth the journey.



But it may not suit everyone. This is not the sort of attraction with silken ropes, interactive video, fridge magnets and 5 star loos. 						An intriguing Liverpool city centre historical oddity for the adventurous visitor I had a long visit with an expert guide (shorter ones are available) and I found it a most exciting and absolutely fascinating glimpse of somewhere which is highly unusual and remains a bit of an enigma. I came all the way from London for the day to visit it, and felt that it was well worth the journey.



But it may not suit everyone. This is not the sort of attraction with silken ropes, interactive video, fridge magnets and 5 star loos. I’d highly recommend anyone to book, whether you’re local or from outside Liverpool. Some of Liverpools lost history that has been pieced together over time and the quarry itself - wow! I don't want to spoil any more of the story, as the guide will tell you about the history but the volunteers have a lot of passion and dedication and it shows!
					
					Hidden Gem! Literally! What a fascinating visit!  This really is Liverpool's little hidden gem!

						Fascinating experience I had long wanted to visit the tunnels so I decided to join  one of the tours as part of the Heritage Open Days. Our guide was Tom, who was very knowledgeable about the history of the tunnels. It was a fascinating experience into a lesser known part of Liverpool`s history.

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

						Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

					One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. Firstly we were welcomed by the volunteer guides and offered tea/coffee and biscuits. Everyone was friendly. The tour was amazing and our guide spent time answering all our questions. We were given loads of time to see everything. I would highly recommend that visitors become members and book the full tour. I've been on various Liverpool tours and I would rate this one amongst the best.

						One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. 						Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. All the volunteers were friendly, polite and welcoming. I won’t say too much about the tour other than you need to go and have the experience . It’s fascinating! They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. 					Highly recommended Having arrived promptly for our scheduled tour at the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre we were very disappointed to discover that our booking slot hadn't been registered despite e mail confirmation. We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. Massive thanks to to Mike and the team.

						Highly recommended Having arrived promptly for our scheduled tour at the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre we were very disappointed to discover that our booking slot hadn't been registered despite e mail confirmation. We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. 						Amazing experience We went on a tour of the Williamson tunnels today and it was absolutely amazing. There was only the 2 of us with our tour guide, Tom, and he was so friendly and really informative, he really knew his stuff!

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

I wish they were given the permissions and also funding needed for them to carry on the amazing work they are doing.

Thankyou so much again to Tom for such a brilliant day.

From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. My wife and I both live in Liverpool, and now we are retired we have more time to visit our city and a visit to Williamson tunnels was always on our list. We are so glad we have done it now. My only disappointment is that such a wonderful treasure in our city is not funded by the council or some sort of trust. It is all down to donations. Mandy passed on her local knowledge of the area and the tunnels making the trip even more enjoyable.

They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. It’s not a big, flashy attraction, but the history is fascinating - an old sandstone quarry covered over with intricate brick and sandstone arches in the early 1800s, then forgotten and filled in. What’s incredible is that everything you see today has been painstakingly uncovered by volunteers since the 1990s  - by hand, bucket by bucket.

						This is a fascinating place to visit as part of Liverpools heritage.  At first glance you may think what is this place as on the surface it may not seem too attractive, but the magic of the experience is to be found underground. With the history of how they excavated it and what they found, I was captivated for the whole tour, led by Lynn, who was a great guide. 😁
					
					We had a lovely time at the tunnels today. Tom was very informative, friendly and encouraging to explore the little rooms there was.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

						We had a fantastic tour of the tunnels from Col and Pete, and would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Liverpool! They were very knowledgable and the history of the tunnels is fascinating (and mysterious). Looking forward to coming back in a few years as the excavations continue!

					We booked the 1230 tour on the Sunday and once fully kitted with helmet and high vis we set off to visit one of the tunnels rediscovered 60 years after they were last seen. A fascinating tour led by one of the volunteers who have spent many years clearing debris by hand from the tunnels. The history of Williamson, his tunnels and his workforce is mostly a mystery and makes for some debate about the motives, philanthropy and nature of the endeavours. We had such an interesting visit. 						We booked the 1230 tour on the Sunday and once fully kitted with helmet and high vis we set off to visit one of the tunnels rediscovered 60 years after they were last seen. A fascinating tour led by one of the volunteers who have spent many years clearing debris by hand from the tunnels. The history of Williamson, his tunnels and his workforce is mostly a mystery and makes for some debate about the motives, philanthropy and nature of the endeavours. We had such an interesting visit. 					5 of our family went to view the cellulars it was our first time and it was absolutely brilliant our guid Tom was very knowledgeable and told us loads of interesting facts we travelled down over 65 feet below ground down to the bass of the cellulars interesting artifacts every were glass bottles jugs pipes beer bottles you must visit its free as well. just give what you can to help and support you are under no obligation to give money

						Possibly the most jaw dropping oldest and weirdest sight or attraction you'll ever see in Liverpool, the guys here dig all these tunnels out at weekends volunteers all, they've won all kinds of awards now and rightly so, fantastic insight into old Liverpool if you only visit one place in the city make sure this is it.

					Had a great afternoon at the Paddington site. Mike was very knowledgeable and friendly . The history of the tunnels was interesting to learn about. The tour lasted about an hour and a half. It's very impressive that the volunteers excavated the tunnels and hopefully they will be able to carry on the fabulous work and uncover more tunnels in the future.

						Had a great afternoon at the Paddington site. Mike was very knowledgeable and friendly . The history of the tunnels was interesting to learn about. The tour lasted about an hour and a half. It's very impressive that the volunteers excavated the tunnels and hopefully they will be able to carry on the fabulous work and uncover more tunnels in the future.

					Such a unique and personalised experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history, caves, community, or simply something wonderfully quirky. We were only visiting for a weekend and the tours were initially sold out; however, Mike was incredibly helpful. As soon as a cancellation came through, he informed us immediately and we were able to secure our places.

The tour is delivered either by one of the founders or by those who took part in the excavations themselves, meaning the knowledge shared is rich, personal, and engaging no matter how many times you visit. We were able to ask numerous questions, and at the end we even met almost the entire team who have been working there voluntarily for decades.

I truly loved it and deeply admire the dedication of this community in preserving the heritage and stories of the past for future generations.

					We visited the Paddington underground area albeit it's vaulted and resembles a tunnel, Tony informed us that it is technically a quarry. Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

					It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. The free tour I attended lasts approximately 1.5 - 2 hours. You visit the tunnels, but in addition, our guide Peter shared lots of important facts and information about the site and its history. All the staff are very friendly, and the work they do to continue the recovery efforts in these tunnels is admirable. I definitely recommend it!!

Enter a world of smallish tunnels and cathedral sized caverns. Our guides, Tony and Tom, are enthusiastic and are eager to impart as much of their knowledge to you as possible and are ably assisted by Laura in reception. Remember to give as generous a donation as possible to help them to continue with their work of excavating more areas of the site.

Our guide, Clare, was a passionate volunteer who has been involved in exploring and clearing out these tunnels for many many years.

						A hidden gem among Liverpool's many treasures. We had a great experience and our guide Tom gave us a really insightful tour. The dedication of the volunteers to keeping this part of Liverpool's history alive is amazing and I wish them all the best in their future endeavours. Definitely a highlight of our trip!

Best to book online in advance on the Friends website. The standard tours are free, although if you join as a member (£5) there is an extended tour available. This extended part was in my opinion even better than the first part & definitely worth it. Allow 3 hours for both tours & maybe consider going for breakfast/brunch beforehand, as your lunch will be quite late afterwards. There are some steps & the floor is uneven, so wear sensible shoes. I managed also to get some dirty marks on my jeans somehow… dark trousers not a bad idea
