Goodbye old Friend: Rest in Peace Jimbo

We have received the very sad news that our old friend and colleague, Jim Moran passed away on Sunday 2nd June 2024. The Trustees and volunteers send their thoughts and condolences to Jim’s family and friends at this very sad time.

Jim had always been a vocal supporter of the Williamson’s Tunnels, having first becoming a member of FoWT way back in 1998. He loved being involved in all FoWT activities – digging out the tunnels, taking people on a tour, fundraising or spreading the word about FoWT at history shows. Jim was good at listening, and was prepared to take time to help solve problems. He was a very generous, humorous and larger than life character, being very caring & passionate about the future of the Tunnels. Jimbo was liked by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

His tunnel tours were legendary, he could (and would) talk for ever. Jim also played an important role in the planning and organisation of the international conference, the 5th International Symposium on Souterrains, hosted by FoWT in 2002.

Jim was instrumental in arranging the loan of a totally weather-proof army tent called a Drash.  In the winter months, when we had no shelter whatsoever at Mason Street, this circular tent protected us, and our visitors including a film crew, from the wind and the rain. Jim drove down to Herefordshire and back several times to collect, and then return the Drash to its owners.

I Myself, am particularly grateful, as Jimbo introduced me, back in 2001, to my future wife…

Thank you Jimbo, Rest In Peace
