“The history of Denbigh Asylum”, by Clwyd Wynne

The next FoWT monthly meeting will be held on 9th May 2022. Our guest speaker on the night will be Clwyd Wynne who will tell us the fascinating story of the Denbigh Asylum.

“My name is Clwyd Wynne and I was a psychiatric nurse for 35years mostly at the North Wales Hospital until it closed in 1995 after which I managed the acute psychiatric unit in Glan Clwyd Hospital before I retired. I helped to set up the North Wales Hospital Historical Society in about 1990 to preserve and document the history of the hospital. I wrote my first book about it in 1995 which is an overview of the 150 years of history. I have just written and published Volume 1 of a more comprehensive and detailed history last year which covers the history in Victorian times up until 1900. I have almost completed Volume 2 which covers 1900 to 1948, when the hospital became part of the new NHS, and I will be writing a 3rd volume to cover the period from 1948 to its closure in 1995. I still maintain an interest in mental health having been a trustee and chairman of Vale of Clwyd Mind. I have given many talks on the hospital and other aspects of the history of Denbigh. We also produced a couple of dvd’s of the history of the hospital. I am a member of Denbigh Community Archive group which helps to preserve the history and heritage of Denbigh mainly through photographs and film. We also give talks, show films and put on exhibitions about the town.”

As usual, the talk will be followed by an update on the latest Williamson Tunnels news and an illustrated presentation by one of the FoWT committee on another aspect of Williamson’s Tunnels, with lots of opportunities for questions and answers.
