					An engineering marvel I’m not sure any written review will ever do justice to the experience of actually setting foot in the Williamson tunnels. From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. My wife and I both live in Liverpool, and now we are retired we have more time to visit our city and a visit to Williamson tunnels was always on our list. We are so glad we have done it now. My only disappointment is that such a wonderful treasure in our city is not funded by the council or some sort of trust. It is all down to donations. Mandy passed on her local knowledge of the area and the tunnels making the trip even more enjoyable.

						An engineering marvel I’m not sure any written review will ever do justice to the experience of actually setting foot in the Williamson tunnels. 						What an intriguing place. Well worth a visit 😁👍 What an amazing little discovery I thought to myself as we walked up the road to the entrance from the car park, our first fantastic host telling us the history of the Joseph Williamson and the tunnels discovery.



Right from the get go, going down those first few steps underground this place captivated my imagination. It's like something out of a book. It's so fascinating to see and hear the history of these odd spaces, all whilst being stood inside them deep underground on some unassuming street in Liverpool. 



Definitely worth a visit or three. Great guys that run the place who are all volunteer. The work that has gone into excavating and rediscovering these spaces is incredible.

The guide Mandy was exceptionally informative and dedicated to the preservation of Joseph Williamson's heritage.

Remarkable tunnel building and stories of times gone by.

					Brilliant Experience What a fantastic thing to experience! I've lived near Liverpool for nearly 30 years, and never knew there was something like this lying below the city. Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels. 



I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.



The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool.

Our guide Chris was both entertaining and informative.   His explanations really brought the history to life.

					Fascinating experience beneath your feet Visited the tunnels on Sunday lunchtime as a family with two teenagers. Excellent communication from the volunteers beforehand to book the visit and to find it on the day which was straightforward. 



Mike was our tour guide on the day and was excellent, clearly passionate about volunteering on the project to unearth more of these amazing tunnels. He was full of knowledge and shared as much as he could answering all the questions the group had. 



It’s such an unusual experience to walk along a road in Liverpool knowing there is a huge void beneath your feet  and then seconds later climb down to see it for yourselves.

						Absolutely awesome Second time I have been . Just an incredible place really amazing piece of social history. Sadly the local council refuse to give it heritage listing so it is likely to close, g and see it while you can. Best bit of the uk I have seen.
					
					Well worth a visit and great team of knowledgeable volunteers. These hardworking volunteers give up precious time and are so passionate and dedicated to their role and it was very much appreciated. Really interesting, honest and informative. 						Well worth a visit and great team of knowledgeable volunteers. 						You must visit the Tunnels Great bunch of people, good banter ( we were in Liverpool after all) . The tour by Chris was very informative and for me one of the the measures of a good trip is that I learned something, which I did. Chris really knew his stuff, how to lead a tour and was  very safety conscious. Really good experience
					
					Great time at 39 Mason Street, Edge Hill L7 3EW ! We read their good instructions to get here, and our Uber driver (£7.92 from Waterfront ) brought us to the door.

We had to wait for others who DID NOT READ the message properly!!



It was a very interesting visit, and we can certainly recommend.

We had to wait for others who DID NOT READ the message properly!!



It was a very interesting visit, and we can certainly recommend.

It’s a free tour lasting a good two hours, but we felt it was worth a generous donation at the end .

All the staff we encountered were very friendly, and made us feel welcome.

Amazing tour with our guide Tom, so interesting learning all about the Williamson's Tunnels.  My mum and son came and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

						Lovely little afternoon out learning about such a fascinating topic. We (3 adults) came along not knowing what to expect. All the volunteers and staff were very welcoming from arrival. 					Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)

There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).

The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!

Or even volunteer :-)

All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

					Well Worth A Visit If you are ever in Liverpool, you should really try to visit this amazing attraction.   The tunnels themselves are breath taking, with a remarkable history.   

However, I really need to praise the volunteers running the tours.  They were so friendly and welcoming.   Unlike many commercial attractions, we were not hurried and made to feel at home instantly.  Clare our guide was fantastic, she was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, we were in awe.   She really did go out of her way to make our tour feel special.

					Very interesting and great value. We decided to take out a friends of the tunnels membership so we could do the extended tour of the house and we are very glad we did. Our guide was Tom, who was very knowledgeable about the history of the tunnels. It was a fascinating experience into a lesser known part of Liverpool`s history.
					
					What an amazing place! A group of 24 of us went today. We were made very welcome. Our guides were enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. The whole place was fascinating. There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. Just bear in mind that you are going underground and there are steps and uneven surfaces. There are 2 separate sections to visit. We were there for atleast 2 and a half hours. There's also a little shop if you want to buy souvenirs.

Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.

The tunnels were filled in after Williamson's death, leaving the early explorers from the Friends of Williamson's Tunnels to discover many objects still intact in the rubbish; some are on display in the tunnels.

All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

					An intriguing Liverpool city centre historical oddity for the adventurous visitor I had a long visit with an expert guide (shorter ones are available) and I found it a most exciting and absolutely fascinating glimpse of somewhere which is highly unusual and remains a bit of an enigma. I came all the way from London for the day to visit it, and felt that it was well worth the journey.



But it may not suit everyone. This is not the sort of attraction with silken ropes, interactive video, fridge magnets and 5 star loos. It is work in progress, a visit to a spectacular archaeological dig, in a quiet back street near the city centre, manned by enthusiasts, and where you may get mud on your clothes. There were lots of stairs. I was kitted out with hard hat and high viz.



I think it deserves bus loads of visitors, but it does not get them, apparently because it is rather offbeat and not everyone appreciates dank holes in the ground. 						An intriguing Liverpool city centre historical oddity for the adventurous visitor I had a long visit with an expert guide (shorter ones are available) and I found it a most exciting and absolutely fascinating glimpse of somewhere which is highly unusual and remains a bit of an enigma. I came all the way from London for the day to visit it, and felt that it was well worth the journey.



But it may not suit everyone. This is not the sort of attraction with silken ropes, interactive video, fridge magnets and 5 star loos. It is work in progress, a visit to a spectacular archaeological dig, in a quiet back street near the city centre, manned by enthusiasts, and where you may get mud on your clothes. There were lots of stairs. I was kitted out with hard hat and high viz.



I think it deserves bus loads of visitors, but it does not get them, apparently because it is rather offbeat and not everyone appreciates dank holes in the ground. With only discerning visitors, at least the volunteer workers have more time there for further digging! It is only open on a day or two in the week, so book your visit in advance.

						Amazing experience We went on a tour of the Williamson tunnels today and it was absolutely amazing. There was only the 2 of us with our tour guide, Tom, and he was so friendly and really informative, he really knew his stuff!

It was amazing to see and hear about, it took roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes but it went so quick because we enjoyed it so much.

The work they have put in to making these tours possible is unreal and we are extremely grateful for that.

I wish they were given the permissions and also funding needed for them to carry on the amazing work they are doing.

Tour was well run with informative guides and are a credit to what should be a Listed Site of Major Historical Importance.

We learnt all about the philanthropist Joseph Williamson what a tremendous man, we went down to a labyrinth of tunnels, at different levels. The volunteers do a fantastic job keeping the tunnels open  amazingly not supported by Liverpool Council or the Heritage trust.

						A unique experience It was a place we had always wanted to visit and we weren’t disappointed. Clare our guide was amazing  her knowledge was extensive and her enthusiasm knew no bounds.

We learnt all about the philanthropist Joseph Williamson what a tremendous man, we went down to a labyrinth of tunnels, at different levels. The volunteers do a fantastic job keeping the tunnels open  amazingly not supported by Liverpool Council or the Heritage trust.

This is a project that must be supported by all to keep a unique asset for future generations ..thank you so much for our great day.

						Liverpools labyrinth The Williamson tunnels are an absolutely marvel of human engineering. A great tour showed off parts of the tunnels that run under Edge Hill in Liverpool. Well worth a visit. Run by a great team of volunteers that make it an exploration to remember.

The size and depth of the site is breathtaking and the amount of work undertaken by the team to excavate the site difficult to comprehend. 						Great morning, a real alternative to traditional sites. This was such an interesting trip. Peter was our guide, bear in mind they are all volunteers, he was full of inormation, looked to answer all questions and was really engaging. Who knew what goes on beneath the streets?

Tom our guide has a wealth of knowledge he shares along the way, always willing  to answer questions and his passion for the preservation and excavation of the tunnels is evident.  This tour is run by volunteers and their enthusiasm is amazing. I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. 						Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels tour I found this to be a fascinating tour and our guide Tony was very interesting to listen to as he guided us around the tunnels (quarries). It was fascinating to see all of the pieces that had been reclaimed from when the tunnels were filled with Liverpool’s rubbish and hear little anecdotes about them. You need to be comfortable going up and down stairs for the tour.

We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road.

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. 					One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. 						Going Underground in Liverpool My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm. 



Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging,  knowledgable and down to earth! 



The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

						I enjoyed an absolutely amazing time with my fellow walkers of the St Helens Group RA when we went on an guided tour of 'Williamson Tunnels' by the 'Friends Of Williamson Tunnels' on Sunday. It was very interesting, and I will definitely go again to see how much more the volunteers have uncovered as they continue with the exploration digging they're doing, and definitely recommend anyone to go and visit and witness the remarkable sites of both the Tunnels, and remains of the former Mansion House of Williamson themselves. :)

						what a treat! i went in with 0 expectations and was blown away by every part of this tour. the knowledge of our tour guide, Mandy, was unmatched, she was so friendly and funny and informative i had no questions at the end of the tour. this really was a delightful tour of a massively understated part of liverpools history and the work the friends of williamsons tunnels have done has saved a very important part of history from being lost to time. thank you for a wonderful tour Mandy.

					We visited the Paddington underground area albeit it's vaulted and resembles a tunnel, Tony informed us that it is technically a quarry. Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

						This tour was a spectacular hidden gem of Liverpool. We had a tour with Phil, and he was an amazing guide. The tunnels were mind boggling. Everytime we entered  a new section, I was in more awe. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!

						Absolutely amazing. Been on my to do list for a very long time and finally got to visit yesterday.

					Firstly WOW! What a amazing testimony to Liverpools Heritage,  this group of founders including  really are a wonderful, insightful and friendly bunch.



The tour is personable and not at all like a generic or scripted. Left feeling ALOT more informed about my city and the endevours Williamson initially went through in his curiosity and passions.

						Firstly WOW! What a amazing testimony to Liverpools Heritage,  this group of founders including  really are a wonderful, insightful and friendly bunch.



The tour is personable and not at all like a generic or scripted. Left feeling ALOT more informed about my city and the endevours Williamson initially went through in his curiosity and passions.

					What a gem! Tucked away in Edge Hill, Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels brings Joseph Williamson’s eccentric 19th-century underground world vividly to life. A passionate team of volunteers has painstakingly excavated and restored vaults, passageways and vast chambers, and they tell the story brilliantly. Our guide, Chris, took his time, answered every question, and made the labyrinth feel both mysterious and human. We spent about 2–2.5 hours below ground and didn’t feel bored for a second.



A few extras that make it special: these tunnels were dug in the early 1800s and their purpose is still debated—employment for the poor, quarry backfill, or sheer eccentricity—but the result is spectacular, including the so-called “Banqueting Hall”, a dramatic vaulted space deep beneath Mason Street. FoWT has been uncovering and preserving this network since the 1990s, entirely volunteer-led, which makes the quality of the tour even more impressive. Entry is free; donations are welcomed and very well used when you see what’s been achieved. Tip: book ahead for their Wednesday/Sunday tours, wear sturdy shoes, and don’t forget to put your pin on the visitors’ map near the free coffee and hot cocoa.

The many fascinating artefacts were a highlight of the tour andthis is a must-do when in Liverpool.
					
					We had a lovely time at the tunnels today. Tom was very informative, friendly and encouraging to explore the little rooms there was.

We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.

Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

					Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? To be honest I expected more to be excavated than is actually the case because of the rave reviews, though the amount of Earth removed is no less impressive & the lack of progress isn’t the fault of the FoWT. Red tape is holding them up apparently. Best to see this as a work in progress. When more is excavated, no doubt the tunnels will become even more impressive.

					Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.

Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.

Loads of artifacts have been dug up.

And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.

					Such a unique and personalised experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history, caves, community, or simply something wonderfully quirky. We were only visiting for a weekend and the tours were initially sold out; however, Mike was incredibly helpful. As soon as a cancellation came through, he informed us immediately and we were able to secure our places.

The tour is delivered either by one of the founders or by those who took part in the excavations themselves, meaning the knowledge shared is rich, personal, and engaging no matter how many times you visit. We were able to ask numerous questions, and at the end we even met almost the entire team who have been working there voluntarily for decades.

I truly loved it and deeply admire the dedication of this community in preserving the heritage and stories of the past for future generations.

					Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!
