Our next FoWT monthly meeting will take place on Monday 7th December 2026 – 7.00 pm (19.00 hrs) via Zoom.
“The Rise and Fall of the White Star Line” by Peter Elson.
About the Speaker
Peter Elson is an award-winning writer and broadcaster who has spent much of his life in Merseyside, in spite of being schooled in Chester and born in South Africa. He was awarded British Maritime Foundation Writer of the Year 2009, presented by The Princess Royal. As a leading Liverpool city guide, his greatest accolade was to be chosen by the US Embassy to give a personal tour to the American Ambassador to the UK. A regular broadcaster on BBC Radio Merseyside talking about the city’s history and maritime heritage, he was also a journalist for nearly 20 years at the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo (for which he also wrote eight books on maritime matters). Previously he wrote for the national press, including the Telegraph, Times, Guardian, Observer and Mail. More recently, he worked as a fundraiser for Liverpool Blue Coat School. While working at The Daily Telegraph he stopped a dual carriageway being built alongside Egypt’s great pyramids at Giza (although he is not quite sure how this happened) and had Carnforth station’s broken clock restored – as famously featured in the film Brief Encounter
