Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

What's lurking underground in Liverpool! We did'nt really know what to expect on our visit to the tunnels so we were both astounded when we were led underground! Our guide Mike had so much information to share with the group and he was happy to answer any questions. I would highly recommend the tour to anyone, we don't come from Liverpool but if you do you should visit here and learn what is lurking underground in your city!

Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! We ended up being the only people on the 12:30 tour, but our guide Tom still gave us a ‘private’ tour - he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate that the tour still went ahead.
I will probably return again in a couple of years, and see if any new evidence or tunnels have been found by then!

Walk in the footsteps of the Mole of Edge Hill Who would have thought we would discover such a labyrinth of tunnels under the streets of Liverpool courtesy of the Friends of Williamsons Tunnels? What the volunteers have done to discover and uncover this magical place is remarkable. Our small group was guided through the tunnels by our friendly and knowledgeable guide Mike who coincidentally was who I had email contact with to arrange our tour. The response to my enquiry was speedy and we were all set to go. We continued on to an extended tour and we spent several interesting hours in total exploring the work of Mr Williamson. I would highly recommend visiting the tunnels for a unique experience you won’t forget.

Mike gave us a tour today of both the Paddington site and Joseph Williamson’s house site and both were absolutely brilliant. The Victorian relics found on the site during the digs are on display and it is so interesting to see daily household items from that era and piece together a picture of what life was like in Liverpool during that time. The tunnels themselves are vast and the depth of them is just incomprehensible, especially when the intention behind them remains unknown! I’ve lived in Liverpool all my life and I knew the tunnels existed but I never knew the full extent of them (and I still don’t as Mike explained that there is so much more to be discovered!) I really really 100% recommend that everyone does this tour. Hopefully the council sees sense and provides the necessary lease and the digging can continue because it would be such a shame if this amount of history was to be lost!

Having seen the tunnels on various TV shows, our guide, Mike, gave a captivating tour with stories from his years of tunnelling on the site as a volunteer, and interesting details of the variety of artifacts found. This is a working site, with new tunnels and spaces still being discovered. Well worth a visit - and we will be returning to see their progress from time to time.

The tour lasted for about two hours and was structured really well, revealing more of the tunnels and the history as you go.

What the group of volunteers have achieved in discovering and digging out these tunnels bucket by bucket is amazing.

A very interesting alternative thing to do This is an entirely volunteer-led free tour that takes you down below the streets of Liverpool to a network of underground caverns. I don't want to spoil any more of the story, as the guide will tell you about the history but the volunteers have a lot of passion and dedication and it shows!

What a good way to spend an hour or so A really interesting place, lots of history and very enthusiastic and friendly volunteers. Clare was a very good guide and explained the tunnels clearly to us.

Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels.

I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.

The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool.

Tours are free, but you can leave a donation at the end.

It's best to book as far in advance as is possible, especially during summer peak season.

Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels.

Firstly we were welcomed by the volunteer guides and offered tea/coffee and biscuits. Everyone was friendly. The tour was amazing and our guide spent time answering all our questions. We were given loads of time to see everything. I would highly recommend that visitors become members and book the full tour. I've been on various Liverpool tours and I would rate this one amongst the best.

One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. Firstly we were welcomed by the volunteer guides and offered tea/coffee and biscuits. Everyone was friendly. The tour was amazing and our guide spent time answering all our questions. We were given loads of time to see everything. I would highly recommend that visitors become members and book the full tour. I've been on various Liverpool tours and I would rate this one amongst the best.

An engineering marvel I’m not sure any written review will ever do justice to the experience of actually setting foot in the Williamson tunnels. From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. My wife and I both live in Liverpool, and now we are retired we have more time to visit our city and a visit to Williamson tunnels was always on our list. We are so glad we have done it now. A worthwhile trip when in Liverpool! After our 30 min walk to the Williamson Tunnels (from the central) at first we thought ‘what lies beneath here?’. Well, a lot of history and facts! Tom, our guide, was very passionate and great at story telling. Friendly and welcoming, any questions asked were answered! Would recommend!

Wonderful visit. Recently visited the tunnels with a group of friends and received a warm welcome from our guides Mandy and Clare who throughout our visit, were very knowledgable, and patient and all delivered with a great sense of humour. Our small group all felt that our tour had opened their eyes not only about the work that the Friends continue to do , but also a rare insight into a part of Livepools historical social history which is often overlooked. The best thing to see in Liverpool This is truly an amazing experience, to go down these tunnels, which no one is quite sure why they are there is brilliant.

Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. There were lots of stairs. I was kitted out with hard hat and high viz.

I think it deserves bus loads of visitors, but it does not get them, apparently because it is rather offbeat and not everyone appreciates dank holes in the ground. Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels tour I found this to be a fascinating tour and our guide Tony was very interesting to listen to as he guided us around the tunnels (quarries). It was fascinating to see all of the pieces that had been reclaimed from when the tunnels were filled with Liverpool’s rubbish and hear little anecdotes about them. You need to be comfortable going up and down stairs for the tour.

Lovely little afternoon out learning about such a fascinating topic. We (3 adults) came along not knowing what to expect. All the volunteers and staff were very welcoming from arrival. Tony our guide was very informative and passionate about the tunnels. We found the experience extremely interesting.
We can’t wait to come back and explore more sections.

Great visit to learn some local history Our guide was Tom, who gave a very interesting recount of the history of Joseph Williamson and the rediscovery and excavation of the tunnels. The tour lasted almost exactly the advertised 1.5 hours. Being from Liverpool, a visit to tunnels is something I’d wanted to do for a long time and it was lovely to see people from as far as the US in our group of 11. The volunteers do a great job of preserving this fabulous and weird bit of local history.

We are part of a social group and we attended the Williamson tunnels as part of a group outing.
We would really recommend this tour as a fascinating and interesting tour to look into Liverpools past history.
We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.

Liverpools labyrinth The Williamson tunnels are an absolutely marvel of human engineering. A great tour showed off parts of the tunnels that run under Edge Hill in Liverpool. Well worth a visit. Run by a great team of volunteers that make it an exploration to remember.

Williamson Tunnels - Why? Quirky attraction to see the Willamson Tunnels probably dug by soldiers with no other work returning from the Napoleonic Wars after 1812.

Extremely wealthy philanthropist Joseph Williamson decided to dig tunnels under parts of Liverpool to employ out of work soldiers for no other reasons than he had money and he could.

I visited with my 7 year old son, we got a taxi from the city centre that dropped us outside. We were shocked to see a standard detached row of houses lining one side of the road. We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road.
We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!)
Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time.
Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

A unique experience It was a place we had always wanted to visit and we weren’t disappointed. Clare our guide was amazing her knowledge was extensive and her enthusiasm knew no bounds.
We learnt all about the philanthropist Joseph Williamson what a tremendous man, we went down to a labyrinth of tunnels, at different levels. The volunteers do a fantastic job keeping the tunnels open amazingly not supported by Liverpool Council or the Heritage trust.
This is a project that must be supported by all to keep a unique asset for future generations ..thank you so much for our great day.

Fascinating slice of subterranean history Really fantastic experience - so interesting and unexpected. Our guide Mike was super friendly & knowledgeable, and very patient waiting for my mum to traverse the many steps! Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Liverpool. I hope the council gives them to permission to excavate more tunnels soon!

I would highly recommend a visit whether you are a tourist or like us from Liverpool to discover some of the secrets of our wonderful city.

Going Underground in Liverpool My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm.

Terrific Tunnels! What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. The tunnels themselves are so interesting but what makes this organisation is the intrepid group of subterranean explorers who run it. Our guide was Tom, who was one of the excavators of the space we visited, and his passion was absolutely contagious. The tour overran, we were so busy talking, but the time flew by. You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.
Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)
There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).
The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!
Or even volunteer :-)
All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!
You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. All the volunteers were friendly, polite and welcoming. I won’t say too much about the tour other than you need to go and have the experience . It’s fascinating! Thank you Mike for a fantastic experience!!!!

This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.
The tunnels were filled in after Williamson's death, leaving the early explorers from the Friends of Williamson's Tunnels to discover many objects still intact in the rubbish; some are on display in the tunnels.
All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

5 of our family went to view the cellulars it was our first time and it was absolutely brilliant our guid Tom was very knowledgeable and told us loads of interesting facts we travelled down over 65 feet below ground down to the bass of the cellulars interesting artifacts every were glass bottles jugs pipes beer bottles you must visit its free as well. just give what you can to help and support you are under no obligation to give money

5 of our family went to view the cellulars it was our first time and it was absolutely brilliant our guid Tom was very knowledgeable and told us loads of interesting facts we travelled down over 65 feet below ground down to the bass of the cellulars interesting artifacts every were glass bottles jugs pipes beer bottles you must visit its free as well. just give what you can to help and support you are under no obligation to give money

We had a lovely time at the tunnels today. Tom was very informative, friendly and encouraging to explore the little rooms there was.
We loved the items there were found in the rubble and the knowledge of how the stone at the bottom had been cut.
Definitely recommend. We plan to return with our 4 year old as, if they can adhere to the safety rules, it's something super cool for kids to see too! Especially as they get to wear a hi-vis jacket and hard hat.

Such a unique and personalised experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history, caves, community, or simply something wonderfully quirky. We were only visiting for a weekend and the tours were initially sold out; however, Mike was incredibly helpful. As soon as a cancellation came through, he informed us immediately and we were able to secure our places.
The tour is delivered either by one of the founders or by those who took part in the excavations themselves, meaning the knowledge shared is rich, personal, and engaging no matter how many times you visit. We were able to ask numerous questions, and at the end we even met almost the entire team who have been working there voluntarily for decades.
I truly loved it and deeply admire the dedication of this community in preserving the heritage and stories of the past for future generations.

What a gem! Tucked away in Edge Hill, Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels brings Joseph Williamson’s eccentric 19th-century underground world vividly to life. A passionate team of volunteers has painstakingly excavated and restored vaults, passageways and vast chambers, and they tell the story brilliantly. Our guide, Chris, took his time, answered every question, and made the labyrinth feel both mysterious and human. We spent about 2–2.5 hours below ground and didn’t feel bored for a second.

A few extras that make it special: these tunnels were dug in the early 1800s and their purpose is still debated—employment for the poor, quarry backfill, or sheer eccentricity—but the result is spectacular, including the so-called “Banqueting Hall”, a dramatic vaulted space deep beneath Mason Street. FoWT has been uncovering and preserving this network since the 1990s, entirely volunteer-led, which makes the quality of the tour even more impressive. Entry is free; donations are welcomed and very well used when you see what’s been achieved. Tip: book ahead for their Wednesday/Sunday tours, wear sturdy shoes, and don’t forget to put your pin on the visitors’ map near the free coffee and hot cocoa.

Absolutely recommended—something wonderfully different from the usual city highlights, and a testament to Liverpool’s quirky, industrious past.

A passionate team of volunteers has painstakingly excavated and restored vaults, passageways and vast chambers, and they tell the story brilliantly. Our guide, Chris, took his time, answered every question, and made the labyrinth feel both mysterious and human. We spent about 2–2.5 hours below ground and didn’t feel bored for a second.

A few extras that make it special: these tunnels were dug in the early 1800s and their purpose is still debated—employment for the poor, quarry backfill, or sheer eccentricity—but the result is spectacular, including the so-called “Banqueting Hall”, a dramatic vaulted space deep beneath Mason Street. FoWT has been uncovering and preserving this network since the 1990s, entirely volunteer-led, which makes the quality of the tour even more impressive. Entry is free; donations are welcomed and very well used when you see what’s been achieved. Tip: book ahead for their Wednesday/Sunday tours, wear sturdy shoes, and don’t forget to put your pin on the visitors’ map near the free coffee and hot cocoa.

Absolutely recommended—something wonderfully different from the usual city highlights, and a testament to Liverpool’s quirky, industrious past.

We visited the Paddington underground area albeit it's vaulted and resembles a tunnel, Tony informed us that it is technically a quarry. Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

Excellent tour. Quite an extraordinary story and a very memorable experience. A special thanks to Tom for sharing his knowledge and obvious passion for the place. Def recommended if you are in Liverpool.

Interesting tour with lots of information from a brilliant tour guide called Tom, an almost time capsule of items on display in the location they where found, great experience.

Williamson Tunnels – Liverpool – STEM Site Visit

Fascinating to see these tunnels and all the artefacts found when clearing them out. Also fascinating to hear about the very eccentric Joseph Williamson.
Our guide, Clare, was a passionate volunteer who has been involved in exploring and clearing out these tunnels for many many years.
FoWT do not have a slick visitor centre - just a portakabin (and a portaloo) - but the volunteers are clearly very knowledgeable, experienced and passionate enough to give their time for free tours.
A quirky, unique experience - definitely worth the visit.

Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? To be honest I expected more to be excavated than is actually the case because of the rave reviews, though the amount of Earth removed is no less impressive & the lack of progress isn’t the fault of the FoWT. Red tape is holding them up apparently. Best to see this as a work in progress. When more is excavated, no doubt the tunnels will become even more impressive.

It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. The free tour I attended lasts approximately 1.5 - 2 hours. You visit the tunnels, but in addition, our guide Peter shared lots of important facts and information about the site and its history. All the staff are very friendly, and the work they do to continue the recovery efforts in these tunnels is admirable. I definitely recommend it!!
