Epic! Really enjoyed our trip underground with our excellent guide Chris. Very knowledgeable and explained everything really well. We were very lucky to have had our own personal guide as the tour we wanted to go on was fully booked so Mike very kindly arranged our tour with Chris. Cannot recommend this tour enough! Just epic!!!

Extended tour I had a fantastic time at the tunnel, I felt very welcome, and was given a lot of interesting information. I would definitely recommend taking a trip here and becoming a member to ensure these tunnels stay open for all to see.

Loved the tour We had a really enjoyable afternoon visiting the tunnels - couldn’t fault it. Our guide was excellent and gave a thorough recount of the history. The volunteers are really passionate about preserving the tunnels and so they should be. Definitely will visit again with others.

Welcoming ‘Friends’ Highly recommend this visit! Our guide Chris was very friendly and informative! Was great to see the amazing tunnels under our feet and hear about the work the ‘friends’ have done to allow us to visit! Fascinating!! A unique and wonderful experience, I don't think that there is anything quite like it in the whole country. Can't wait to return in a few years time to see how this fascinating project has progressed in the meantime. Thoroughly recommended.

It's so fascinating to see and hear the history of these odd spaces, all whilst being stood inside them deep underground on some unassuming street in Liverpool.

Definitely worth a visit or three. Great guys that run the place who are all volunteer. The work that has gone into excavating and rediscovering these spaces is incredible.

Go visit and see for yourself, this allows the FOWT to keep finding more of this incredible story.

You must visit the Tunnels Great bunch of people, good banter ( we were in Liverpool after all) . The tour by Chris was very informative and for me one of the the measures of a good trip is that I learned something, which I did. Chris really knew his stuff, how to lead a tour and was very safety conscious. Really good experience

5 star ratingGoing Underground in Liverpool My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm.

Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging, knowledgable and down to earth!

The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

All in all a great afternoon!

Going Underground in Liverpool My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm.

Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging, knowledgable and down to earth!

The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

All in all a great afternoon!

There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. Just bear in mind that you are going underground and there are steps and uneven surfaces. There are 2 separate sections to visit. We were there for atleast 2 and a half hours. There's also a little shop if you want to buy souvenirs.

Halloween tour Just took granddaughter to Halloween tour, she loves the way they have set it up, also kept her interested all the while, can't praise the guides and the rest of the staff enough, second time I have been ,still got more questions

But it may not suit everyone. This is not the sort of attraction with silken ropes, interactive video, fridge magnets and 5 star loos. It is work in progress, a visit to a spectacular archaeological dig, in a quiet back street near the city centre, manned by enthusiasts, and where you may get mud on your clothes. There were lots of stairs. I was kitted out with hard hat and high viz.

I think it deserves bus loads of visitors, but it does not get them, apparently because it is rather offbeat and not everyone appreciates dank holes in the ground. With only discerning visitors, at least the volunteer workers have more time there for further digging! It is only open on a day or two in the week, so book your visit in advance.

I came all the way from London for the day to visit it, and felt that it was well worth the journey.

We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road.
We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!)
Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time.
Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time.
Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

Amazing Williamson Tunnels What a great trip. Truly fascinating site with a mix of history and engineering. Our guide Mike was very informative and there were kids on the tour and they found it interesting too.

Superb historical excavations What a brilliant experience guided by the very knowledgeable Tom. What he doesn't know about the tunnels and the history isn't worth knowing. The tunnels themselves are so interesting but what makes this organisation is the intrepid group of subterranean explorers who run it. The tunnels themselves are so interesting but what makes this organisation is the intrepid group of subterranean explorers who run it. Our guide was Tom, who was one of the excavators of the space we visited, and his passion was absolutely contagious. The tour overran, we were so busy talking, but the time flew by. We will be back to visit some of the members spaces!

A great and memorable visit Great tour and very informative about what could be considered a hidden jewel in Liverpool. One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. Definitely worth a visit. Mandy was an excellent guide. She told us so much about the history of the local area as well as the actual tunnels. She was fun and entertaining as well as very knowledgeable. The tunnels are amazing. Well worth a visit. A unique experience It was a place we had always wanted to visit and we weren’t disappointed. Clare our guide was amazing her knowledge was extensive and her enthusiasm knew no bounds.

5 star ratingTunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!
You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.
Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)
There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).
The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!
Or even volunteer :-)
All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

Perfect Tour What an amazing tour ! Tom was an excellent guide and took his time with the group. I took my dad who was 96 and Tom took time to make sure he wasn’t left behind. Very interesting and so worth a visit

Williamson tunnels tour I had a fantastic time visiting the Williamson tunnels. Tom our guide was a fountain of information and very friendly and welcoming.
The tunnels themselves have been incredibly restored and the tour is very immersive.

Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! Having seen the tunnels on various TV shows, our guide, Mike, gave a captivating tour with stories from his years of tunnelling on the site as a volunteer, and interesting details of the variety of artifacts found. This is a working site, with new tunnels and spaces still being discovered. Well worth a visit - and we will be returning to see their progress from time to time.

Highly recommended!! Wow what an amazing experience we had at FOIWT.. My son and I visited and are already planning to visit again soon.

Terrific Tunnels! What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. We were redirected to the Friends of Wiliamson's Tunnels around the corner .Although this mistake by The Heritage Centre was entirely beyond his knowledge or control Mike was absolutely brilliant and arranged a personal guided tour just for the two of us despite the last one of the day being almost finished. Tom's knowledge of the labyrinth and his passion for the underground structures brought history alive and made the visit most memorable. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. Our tour guide was Tom, and he was so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the history and the rediscovery of the tunnels (being one of the volunteers that helped to unearth the spaces for the public)

This would be great for anyone local and visitors to the city who want a truly Liverpool Experience. Its damp down there and there are staircases to descend, (so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and check accessibility requirements) but this all adds to the experience!

A very interesting alternative thing to do This is an entirely volunteer-led free tour that takes you down below the streets of Liverpool to a network of underground caverns. I don't want to spoil any more of the story, as the guide will tell you about the history but the volunteers have a lot of passion and dedication and it shows!

We are part of a social group and we attended the Williamson tunnels as part of a group outing.
We would really recommend this tour as a fascinating and interesting tour to look into Liverpools past history.
We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.

Wonderful visit. Recently visited the tunnels with a group of friends and received a warm welcome from our guides Mandy and Clare who throughout our visit, were very knowledgable, and patient and all delivered with a great sense of humour. Our small group all felt that our tour had opened their eyes not only about the work that the Friends continue to do , but also a rare insight into a part of Livepools historical social history which is often overlooked. Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. Great visit to learn some local history Our guide was Tom, who gave a very interesting recount of the history of Joseph Williamson and the rediscovery and excavation of the tunnels. The tour lasted almost exactly the advertised 1.5 hours. Unique experience We really enjoyed the tunnels and experience. This is run by enthusiastic volunteers so not a polished commercial experience. It was fascinating to go underground and see the huge tunnels and the artifacts.

Must see attraction Such a fantastic visit - Tony the guide was wonderful and so knowledgeable. Many friendly volunteers who do a cracking job and you can help yourself to tea and coffee etc beforehand if you arrive early. So much to learn and a must see in Liverpool.

Very interesting and great value. We decided to take out a friends of the tunnels membership so we could do the extended tour of the house and we are very glad we did. It was only £7.50 for the two of us, but well worth it. Very informative guide, who was clearly very passionate about the project and it was very interesting to see the scale of it. There are quite a few steps, which was fine for us, but worth mentioning for anyone who struggles with mobility.

Well worth a visit and great team of knowledgeable volunteers. These hardworking volunteers give up precious time and are so passionate and dedicated to their role and it was very much appreciated. Really interesting, honest and informative. Only comment would be keep moving as we were standing around for quite a long time, but that aside, brilliant and recommended.

Having brought ex-scouser friends back to Liverpool for a couple of days I was not sure what they would make of the Williamson Tunnels friends site. They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. The very favourable impressions were augmented by the verve with which our guide, Mandy, explained everything from the layout to the articles found during excavation. Our guide, Clare, was a passionate volunteer who has been involved in exploring and clearing out these tunnels for many many years.
FoWT do not have a slick visitor centre - just a portakabin (and a portaloo) - but the volunteers are clearly very knowledgeable, experienced and passionate enough to give their time for free tours.

What a great underground adventure. Visited today, and we will be coming back to do the 2nd part.
Your guides are not just well informed, but were the people who dug out these chambers!!!! So you are getting first-hand recounts of their discoveries, living their excitement of finding a new tunnel, or artefact - hearing it from them brings it to life.
Amazing that this exists, and has not been destroyed by city developments and new buildings.
Great to see something run by passionate individuals - not buricrats. Well done FoWT.

It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. What a gem! Tucked away in Edge Hill, Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels brings Joseph Williamson’s eccentric 19th-century underground world vividly to life. A passionate team of volunteers has painstakingly excavated and restored vaults, passageways and vast chambers, and they tell the story brilliantly. Our guide, Chris, took his time, answered every question, and made the labyrinth feel both mysterious and human. We spent about 2–2.5 hours below ground and didn’t feel bored for a second.

A few extras that make it special: these tunnels were dug in the early 1800s and their purpose is still debated—employment for the poor, quarry backfill, or sheer eccentricity—but the result is spectacular, including the so-called “Banqueting Hall”, a dramatic vaulted space deep beneath Mason Street. FoWT has been uncovering and preserving this network since the 1990s, entirely volunteer-led, which makes the quality of the tour even more impressive. Entry is free; donations are welcomed and very well used when you see what’s been achieved. Tip: book ahead for their Wednesday/Sunday tours, wear sturdy shoes, and don’t forget to put your pin on the visitors’ map near the free coffee and hot cocoa.

Absolutely recommended—something wonderfully different from the usual city highlights, and a testament to Liverpool’s quirky, industrious past.

Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? To be honest I expected more to be excavated than is actually the case because of the rave reviews, though the amount of Earth removed is no less impressive & the lack of progress isn’t the fault of the FoWT. Red tape is holding them up apparently. Best to see this as a work in progress. When more is excavated, no doubt the tunnels will become even more impressive.
