Terrific Tunnels! What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. Due to the size of the groups, it's a really intimate experience that allows you to ask all the questions you can think of. My guide, Chris, was so helpful and knowledgeable about the tunnels. I left knowing more and having seen some truly fantastic things! So grateful for the FoWT for running this and sharing their knwoledge and love of the tunnels.

Fascinating This was a fascinating insight into the history of the tunnels and the man behind their construction.

Our guide, Tony, was full of interesting information on both counts and encouraged further investigation. He clearly knew his subject well.

Welcoming ‘Friends’ Highly recommend this visit! Our guide Chris was very friendly and informative! Was great to see the amazing tunnels under our feet and hear about the work the ‘friends’ have done to allow us to visit! All the ‘friends’ made us feel very welcome offering us a brew and biscuit when we arrived and were happy to answer any questions!

After a brief safety talk given by Tom our group guide, we were then taken down to the first of four levels of this amazing tour.

It's hard to imagine all the hard work that the volunteers have done to get the tunnels in the condition that they are today.
It just got better the lower we went into the tunnels.

Tom our guide told a fascinating story of who Mr Williamson was and how he started and then tried to look after the poor and unemployed people of the time, it really was an amazing story and it does show all the hard work that all the volunteers had done to get to where they are today.

If you want an unique and different event, you will not be disappointed by your visit to the tunnels.

We are part of a social group and we attended the Williamson tunnels as part of a group outing.
We would really recommend this tour as a fascinating and interesting tour to look into Liverpools past history.
We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.

Wonderful visit. Recently visited the tunnels with a group of friends and received a warm welcome from our guides Mandy and Clare who throughout our visit, were very knowledgable, and patient and all delivered with a great sense of humour. Our small group all felt that our tour had opened their eyes not only about the work that the Friends continue to do , but also a rare insight into a part of Livepools historical social history which is often overlooked. I cannot recommend visiting this place enough.

5 star ratingTunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!
You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.
Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)
There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).
The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!
Or even volunteer :-)
All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!

A very interesting alternative thing to do This is an entirely volunteer-led free tour that takes you down below the streets of Liverpool to a network of underground caverns. I don't want to spoil any more of the story, as the guide will tell you about the history but the volunteers have a lot of passion and dedication and it shows!

I really wanted to know the impact on the tunnels on subsidence on local properties as the tunnels cover a large area. The tunnels are a mad idea i really wanted to know ‘why’.

The staff were really nice and helpful.

We did enjoy it and made a donation. But it was like watching a series and being left in a cliff hanger not knowing’why’!!!!

Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging, knowledgable and down to earth!

The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

Going Underground in Liverpool My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm.

Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging, knowledgable and down to earth!

The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

All in all a great afternoon!

A great and memorable visit Great tour and very informative about what could be considered a hidden jewel in Liverpool. Shrouded in mystery and full of interesting information about the area and perhaps the reasons for Master Williamson to build these tunnels. The work done by the volunteers to save this important historical site is absolutely wonderful. Super visit to Williamson Tunnels by Chester U3A A superb visit to the Williamson Tunnels by the Industrial Heritage group from Chester U3A. A great welcome and organisation and the guides were excellent and so enthusiastic. Even provided an extra person to help one of our members who suffers from Parkinsons.

Birthday day out with FoWT Went today to visit the Williamson tunnels for my husband's birthday and we had a fascinating visit. The tunnels themselves are so interesting but what makes this organisation is the intrepid group of subterranean explorers who run it. Our guide was Tom, who was one of the excavators of the space we visited, and his passion was absolutely contagious. The tour overran, we were so busy talking, but the time flew by. We will be back to visit some of the members spaces!

A unique experience It was a place we had always wanted to visit and we weren’t disappointed. Clare our guide was amazing her knowledge was extensive and her enthusiasm knew no bounds.
We learnt all about the philanthropist Joseph Williamson what a tremendous man, we went down to a labyrinth of tunnels, at different levels. The volunteers do a fantastic job keeping the tunnels open amazingly not supported by Liverpool Council or the Heritage trust.

Hidden Gem! Literally! What a fascinating visit! This really is Liverpool's little hidden gem!
(I'm at a loss why there is not more positive support and assistance). This is a unique part of the city's history. There is just so much more to be explored.
Our guide Chris was both entertaining and informative. His explanations really brought the history to life.
The final steps to the lowest level defeated me! However, it was still possible to see and hear all about that area, from above.
Sturdy shoes a must! And, don't wear your best clothes!!!!!

One of the best tours to visit in Liverpool. This was an excellent tour. A definite must for anyone visiting Liverpool. Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. Fascinating!! A unique and wonderful experience, I don't think that there is anything quite like it in the whole country. Can't wait to return in a few years time to see how this fascinating project has progressed in the meantime. Thoroughly recommended.

Awesome. Wow. What a great insight into a fascinating man. The tunnels are an awesome place to visit and Mandy gave us a great tour. The tour gets better with a glimpse of the " Ballroom" through a grate in the floor and when you eventually get to the bottom it takes some beating.

Walk in the footsteps of the Mole of Edge Hill Who would have thought we would discover such a labyrinth of tunnels under the streets of Liverpool courtesy of the Friends of Williamsons Tunnels? What the volunteers have done to discover and uncover this magical place is remarkable. A fascinating view into old Liverpool Our tour of the tunnels was expertly guided by Chris. It was very interesting to hear the tales about how the rubble was removed from the tunnels and look at the many artefacts that had been unearthed. Chris did well picking out interesting articles such as the Edward 7th commemorative china cup. Overall 2 hours well spent.

We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road.
We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!)
Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time.
Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

The tunnels were filled in after Williamson's death, leaving the early explorers from the Friends of Williamson's Tunnels to discover many objects still intact in the rubbish; some are on display in the tunnels.
All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

Really interesting visit, worth seeing Fascinating to see these tunnels and all the artefacts found when clearing them out. Also fascinating to hear about the very eccentric Joseph Williamson.
Our guide, Clare, was a passionate volunteer who has been involved in exploring and clearing out these tunnels for many many years.
FoWT do not have a slick visitor centre - just a portakabin (and a portaloo) - but the volunteers are clearly very knowledgeable, experienced and passionate enough to give their time for free tours.

Mandy provided a really interesting and informative tour of the tunnels. If you're in Liverpool on a Wednesday or Sunday, I'd highly recommend a tour of the Williamson Tunnels.

I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.

The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool.

Tours are free, but you can leave a donation at the end.

Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! We ended up being the only people on the 12:30 tour, but our guide Tom still gave us a ‘private’ tour - he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate that the tour still went ahead.

However, I really need to praise the volunteers running the tours. They were so friendly and welcoming. Unlike many commercial attractions, we were not hurried and made to feel at home instantly. The tunnels themselves are absolutely amazing and full of history, but what really made the visit special was our volunteer guide, Claire. She somehow managed to hold our teenagers’ attention for a full two hours — no small achievement! Her knowledge and enthusiasm brought the tunnels to life.

We enjoyed the visit so much that we’ll definitely be joining as members, and we’re already looking forward to booking one of the longer three-hour tours. We honestly couldn’t wait to come back.

Underground chambers in Edge Hill We booked this visit as a "something to do" before having a reunion lunch with more friends, and it was a great choice. Our guide (Chris) has been associated with the excavation of the tunnels for years and so was able to talk very personally about how they cleared them, discovered new twists and turns, found hidden treasures and so on. Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. Definitely worth a visit. Mandy was an excellent guide. She told us so much about the history of the local area as well as the actual tunnels. She was fun and entertaining as well as very knowledgeable. The tunnels are amazing. Well worth a visit. Although we have lived in the city all our lives and had barely heard of the tunnels , it was a fantastic experience and one we shall never forget. Whilst every member of the tunnels staff was friendly, welcoming and understanding they gave up even more of their own time to showcase an aspect of Liverpool's history and culture which would not survive without the dedication of such people. Epic! Really enjoyed our trip underground with our excellent guide Chris. Very knowledgeable and explained everything really well. Great visit to Friends of Williamson Tunnels Having brought ex-scouser friends back to Liverpool for a couple of days I was not sure what they would make of the Williamson Tunnels friends site. They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. The very favourable impressions were augmented by the verve with which our guide, Mandy, explained everything from the layout to the articles found during excavation. Superb historical excavations What a brilliant experience guided by the very knowledgeable Tom. What he doesn't know about the tunnels and the history isn't worth knowing. We only experienced the Paddington excavation which is probably less than one tenth of the whole system. Will definitely be booking on the main tour. The amount of discarded artifacts from the Victorian era onwards was fascinating. Well done to all involved. We even discovered that my wife is related to William Boote, the grocer who occupied several of the Williamson buildings!

Great visit to learn some local history Our guide was Tom, who gave a very interesting recount of the history of Joseph Williamson and the rediscovery and excavation of the tunnels. The tour lasted almost exactly the advertised 1.5 hours. Being from Liverpool, a visit to tunnels is something I’d wanted to do for a long time and it was lovely to see people from as far as the US in our group of 11. The volunteers do a great job of preserving this fabulous and weird bit of local history.

Lovely, Funny, Informative I came in from Philadelphia for a couple days and I had a lovely tour with Mike! The tunnels are such a mysterious event beneath Liverpool and Mike is a great tour guide in explaining so much history to them. So thankful for answering all my questions, too! For anyone considering it, absolutely book it!

Mike gave us a tour today of both the Paddington site and Joseph Williamson’s house site and both were absolutely brilliant. The Victorian relics found on the site during the digs are on display and it is so interesting to see daily household items from that era and piece together a picture of what life was like in Liverpool during that time. The tunnels themselves are vast and the depth of them is just incomprehensible, especially when the intention behind them remains unknown! I’ve lived in Liverpool all my life and I knew the tunnels existed but I never knew the full extent of them (and I still don’t as Mike explained that there is so much more to be discovered!) I really really 100% recommend that everyone does this tour. Hopefully the council sees sense and provides the necessary lease and the digging can continue because it would be such a shame if this amount of history was to be lost!

What an amazing place! A group of 24 of us went today. We were made very welcome. Our guides were enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. The whole place was fascinating. There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. Just bear in mind that you are going underground and there are steps and uneven surfaces. There are 2 separate sections to visit. We were there for atleast 2 and a half hours. Lovely little afternoon out learning about such a fascinating topic. We (3 adults) came along not knowing what to expect. All the volunteers and staff were very welcoming from arrival. You must visit the Tunnels Great bunch of people, good banter ( we were in Liverpool after all) . The tour by Chris was very informative and for me one of the the measures of a good trip is that I learned something, which I did. Mike the guide was incredibly knowledgeable and spoke about his own experience. Our guide, Clare, was a passionate volunteer who has been involved in exploring and clearing out these tunnels for many many years.

It's a really interesting place to visit! The Williamson Tunnels are about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Liverpool, or you can easily get there by bus. The free tour I attended lasts approximately 1.5 - 2 hours. You visit the tunnels, but in addition, our guide Peter shared lots of important facts and information about the site and its history. All the staff are very friendly, and the work they do to continue the recovery efforts in these tunnels is admirable. I definitely recommend it!!

Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? To be honest I expected more to be excavated than is actually the case because of the rave reviews, though the amount of Earth removed is no less impressive & the lack of progress isn’t the fault of the FoWT. Red tape is holding them up apparently. Best to see this as a work in progress. When more is excavated, no doubt the tunnels will become even more impressive.

It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

Tony went on to explain a great deal about the fascinating history of the area, the people and the association of key figures in Liverpool who "worked" with Joseph Williamson. It's a great tour that takes you back in time to the 1800s. The artefacts are amazing that were found underground, from large bowls, to clay pipes and bone china cups. It really is worth a visit. You also go down to the water well area.

As soon as a cancellation came through, he informed us immediately and we were able to secure our places.
The tour is delivered either by one of the founders or by those who took part in the excavations themselves, meaning the knowledge shared is rich, personal, and engaging no matter how many times you visit. We were able to ask numerous questions, and at the end we even met almost the entire team who have been working there voluntarily for decades.
I truly loved it and deeply admire the dedication of this community in preserving the heritage and stories of the past for future generations.

As soon as a cancellation came through, he informed us immediately and we were able to secure our places.
The tour is delivered either by one of the founders or by those who took part in the excavations themselves, meaning the knowledge shared is rich, personal, and engaging no matter how many times you visit. We were able to ask numerous questions, and at the end we even met almost the entire team who have been working there voluntarily for decades.
I truly loved it and deeply admire the dedication of this community in preserving the heritage and stories of the past for future generations.

What a gem! Tucked away in Edge Hill, Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels brings Joseph Williamson’s eccentric 19th-century underground world vividly to life. A passionate team of volunteers has painstakingly excavated and restored vaults, passageways and vast chambers, and they tell the story brilliantly. Our guide, Chris, took his time, answered every question, and made the labyrinth feel both mysterious and human. We spent about 2–2.5 hours below ground and didn’t feel bored for a second.

A few extras that make it special: these tunnels were dug in the early 1800s and their purpose is still debated—employment for the poor, quarry backfill, or sheer eccentricity—but the result is spectacular, including the so-called “Banqueting Hall”, a dramatic vaulted space deep beneath Mason Street. FoWT has been uncovering and preserving this network since the 1990s, entirely volunteer-led, which makes the quality of the tour even more impressive. Entry is free; donations are welcomed and very well used when you see what’s been achieved. Tip: book ahead for their Wednesday/Sunday tours, wear sturdy shoes, and don’t forget to put your pin on the visitors’ map near the free coffee and hot cocoa.

Absolutely recommended—something wonderfully different from the usual city highlights, and a testament to Liverpool’s quirky, industrious past.

What a delightful experience! You can tell the volunteers have so much love for this place, and what an incredible opportunity to witness and explore Liverpool's hidden underground chambers. Can't recommend highly enough.

This tour has to be experienced to be believed. The deepest and most original site of the Williamson excavations with the massive banqueting hall deep enough for a whole house in itself. The many of the knowledgeable volunteers have been there since the tunnels original rediscovery and they have worked constantly over 30 plus dedicated years to open more of the tunnels, bucket at a time due to limited space, a truly impressive achievement that is a fitting tribute to the original works of the man himself. A unique experience of a unique part of Liverpool history. This should be visited by everyone, I know I will be back again.

Best to book online in advance on the Friends website. The standard tours are free, although if you join as a member (£5) there is an extended tour available. This extended part was in my opinion even better than the first part & definitely worth it. Allow 3 hours for both tours & maybe consider going for breakfast/brunch beforehand, as your lunch will be quite late afterwards. There are some steps & the floor is uneven, so wear sensible shoes. I managed also to get some dirty marks on my jeans somehow… dark trousers not a bad idea

Wow! After having a brilliant tour with Clare around the house site, we came back a few days later to visit the Paddington site, this time with Chris. Both guides were very knowledgeable and both sites are well worth a visit. Its amazing the work put into making these tunnels accessible, so well done to all the volunteers! Worth signing up as a member to do the extended tour just to go down the gap leading in to the Banqueting chamber. Tours are free but are very deserving of a good donation towards their continued efforts.

There is a lot of stairs and close spaces. Hi-vis jackets and hard hats are provided before the tour starts. You are advised to wear flat shoes and waterproof jacket as it can get wet and slippy (depending the time of year).

Friends of Joseph Williamson is run by volunteers and enthusiastic historians. The tour is completely free but the group relies heavily on donations for work to continue on. Booking is necessary and they are only open on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Great visit to the tunnels, the history and weirdness combined makes a trip worthwhile.
Still very much a work in progress, the kids were entertained as well with the stories from the guide.
Very impressive work has been completed by the volunteers.
Loads of artifacts have been dug up.
And it's very interesting listening to not only the history of the site, but a slight entry into the weird mind of Joseph Williamson and his weird tunnels he's made under half the estate.

Very cool and such a nice experience and friendly volunteers. but dissapoited we didn't actually go in willams Tunnels and went into Paddington tunnels instead but still an amazing experience and deffo worth going.
