It was very interesting to hear the tales about how the rubble was removed from the tunnels and look at the many artefacts that had been unearthed. Chris did well picking out interesting articles such as the Edward 7th commemorative china cup. Overall 2 hours well spent.

A ‘must see’ and a great lesson in social history. It was an excellent tour which we thoroughly enjoyed. We’d heard a lot about the tunnels but seeing the scale of the them and the work done by the amazingly dedicated volunteers was awe inspiring. Loved the tour We had a really enjoyable afternoon visiting the tunnels - couldn’t fault it. Our guide was excellent and gave a thorough recount of the history. The volunteers are really passionate about preserving the tunnels and so they should be. Definitely will visit again with others.

History below Liverpool When visiting places always like to do something different. As such booked Williamsons Tunnels in advance and was not disappointed. Tom , our quite provided a full explanation about them and the ‘exploring’ was very interesting. No charge but a donation is gladly accepted and well worth it

Like walking back in time. Excellent experience, Mike was a great guide, extremely knowledgeable and the visit was fascinating. The work the Friends of Williamson Tunnel have done is quite staggering. The tunnels are amazing as are the artefacts found in them.
The singing in the cathedral chamber was something we will never forget.

Hidden historic gem A completely unique and wholly immersive experience. If you can go visit these tunnels then you definitely should, because wow! I never would have guessed such an intriguing piece of Liverpool history would be underneath an urban car park. Our guide Tom was very knowledgeable, engaging and enthusiastic.

Great Mystery Very interesting tour to historical Victorian tunnels.

5 star ratingTunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!
You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.
Our guide was Tony, a very lovely and knowledgable chap, who is part of the excavation team yes, there are ongoing discoveries and tunnel clearances; all very interesting. The tour lasted about 1.5 hrs but as Tony said, it really depends on how many questions he gets asked :-)
There are no low or narrow parts to navigate although, sometimes, the floor is a bit uneven. Accessability is by steps and stairs with one very stable metal staircase towards the last part of the tour (but you can view the area without needing to descend).
The tours are free but donations are gratefully recieved and for a small joining fee, you can become a member, getting updates etc. and explore a second part of the tunnels!
Or even volunteer :-)
All in all, it was the best attraction we've done for years. Highly recommended!

Tunnel Walk We actually stumbled across this attraction whilst scrolling through Trip Advisor prior to our visit to Liverpool. It sounded and proved to be Amazing!
You have to book online but it's simple and communication from the friends is very good. Tour sizes are limited due to the nature of the attraction, ie being underground as a group, with 1 guide.

Family visit We visited Williamson’s Tunnels as a family of four (two adults and two teenagers) and had a fantastic experience. The tunnels themselves are absolutely amazing and full of history, but what really made the visit special was our volunteer guide, Claire. She somehow managed to hold our teenagers’ attention for a full two hours — no small achievement! Her knowledge and enthusiasm brought the tunnels to life.

We enjoyed the visit so much that we’ll definitely be joining as members, and we’re already looking forward to booking one of the longer three-hour tours. We honestly couldn’t wait to come back.

Very interesting tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in Liverpool and its history Fantastic tour! I did the tour a few years ago, and found the story of the tunnels very interesting, so wanted to take my partner during our trip to Liverpool! We ended up being the only people on the 12:30 tour, but our guide Tom still gave us a ‘private’ tour - he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate that the tour still went ahead.
I will probably return again in a couple of years, and see if any new evidence or tunnels have been found by then!

Descending through the original cellars, you soon realise this is no ordinary underground experience; intricate brickwork soon changes to solid sandstone walls as you descend the 82 steps to the lowest level; a 60 foot high chamber. This is the hidden world of an underground quarry, secretly hewn from the native bedrock itself by philanthropist Joseph Williamson, whose ultimate purpose seems not to have been to win the hard-earned sandstone, but the employment and training of local unemployed people; all were sworn to secrecy about what they were doing, as Williamson didn't have the mineral and mining rights to the site.
The tunnels were filled in after Williamson's death, leaving the early explorers from the Friends of Williamson's Tunnels to discover many objects still intact in the rubbish; some are on display in the tunnels.
All in all, a fantastic venture into a forgotten world under the streets of Liverpool, it should not be missed.

Mike gave us a tour today of both the Paddington site and Joseph Williamson’s house site and both were absolutely brilliant. The tunnels themselves are vast and the depth of them is just incomprehensible, especially when the intention behind them remains unknown! I’ve lived in Liverpool all my life and I knew the tunnels existed but I never knew the full extent of them (and I still don’t as Mike explained that there is so much more to be discovered!) I really really 100% recommend that everyone does this tour. Hopefully the council sees sense and provides the necessary lease and the digging can continue because it would be such a shame if this amount of history was to be lost!

Amazing tour with the friendliest of tour guides! Thank you all for such an amazing day out Went today with a group of friends, it was an impromptu trip out, we're all local to the area and to find such a hidden gem so close to home is unbelievable , our tour Guide Tom was very thorough and really give us a great experience of the tunnels! Great visit to Friends of Williamson Tunnels Having brought ex-scouser friends back to Liverpool for a couple of days I was not sure what they would make of the Williamson Tunnels friends site. They were blown away and still talking about our visit on our journey back south a couple of days later. As soon as you go underground and see the original site photos and start to hear the history of the dig you understand the massive task and achievement so far. The tunnels are fascinating layer after layer and the array of the many items found during the dig are quite incredible and displayed beautifully . Many of the items make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. As we entered one chamber Mike asked if anyone would like to sing to appreciate the acoustics, my husband being a Liverpool fan sang you’ll never walk alone, what a memorable experience to take away with us. Mikes knowledge and passion for the site made our trip even more enjoyable but as he said the more answers you look for the more questions arise. Best wishes to Mike and all FOWT for future digs and possibly some answers. I would highly recommend a visit whether you are a tourist or like us from Liverpool to discover some of the secrets of our wonderful city.

As we entered one chamber Mike asked if anyone would like to sing to appreciate the acoustics, my husband being a Liverpool fan sang you’ll never walk alone, what a memorable experience to take away with us. Mikes knowledge and passion for the site made our trip even more enjoyable but as he said the more answers you look for the more questions arise. Best wishes to Mike and all FOWT for future digs and possibly some answers. I would highly recommend a visit whether you are a tourist or like us from Liverpool to discover some of the secrets of our wonderful city.

What an amazing place! A group of 24 of us went today. We were made very welcome. Our guides were enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. The whole place was fascinating. There was so much to see and we learnt so much. Questions were welcomed. I would highly recommend a visit here. You won't be disapointed. Williamson tunnels tour I had a fantastic time visiting the Williamson tunnels. Tom our guide was a fountain of information and very friendly and welcoming.
The tunnels themselves have been incredibly restored and the tour is very immersive.

I had visited the Williamson Heritage Centre earlier in the week ( mistaken for the Friends of Williamson Tunnels) both offer an insight into the man that built these amazing structures. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. This tour was my favourite offering a real experience of going deep into the tunnels below, with hard hat and high vis jacket, enthusiastic volunteers and a real sense of exploration. I’d grown up hearing stories of the tunnels, and I am grateful to the team of volunteers that has made it possible to visit. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore Liverpool’s past. Just make sure you are on the right tour, both within the same area. This would be my preferred visit and the Hermitage one for anyone with small children. Thank you to all the volunteers past and present that has made it possible to make this available to all. A special thank you to Tom for sharing his wealth of knowledge along the way.

We are part of a social group and we attended the Williamson tunnels as part of a group outing.
We would really recommend this tour as a fascinating and interesting tour to look into Liverpools past history.
We were met by Mike who was friendly as was all the volunteers who manage the the Williamson tunnels.

Terrific Tunnels! What a great way to spend an hour or so when visiting Liverpool! All the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming when I arrived. Having seen the tunnels on various TV shows, our guide, Mike, gave a captivating tour with stories from his years of tunnelling on the site as a volunteer, and interesting details of the variety of artifacts found. This is a working site, with new tunnels and spaces still being discovered. Well worth a visit - and we will be returning to see their progress from time to time.

The best thing to see in Liverpool This is truly an amazing experience, to go down these tunnels, which no one is quite sure why they are there is brilliant.
Why Williamson decided to build all these tunnels all over the place and at different depths is a mystery. But, it makes it an absolute ‘must do’ if your in Liverpool.

Great tour. Highly recommend taking it. What an interesting tour. Been meaning to do it for ages. Mandy was our guide. My gosh she was so knowledgeable and fun, throwing in lots of little stories about the tunnels but also snippets of historical information on Liverpool itself. When you drive in, it looks like there isn't anything there, so it's quite a shock once you go underground. What a feat of engineering and vision. Highly recommend the tour and can only hope that the Heritage Centre can get saved. Too many sites in the city have been dismissed by city Councils. Amazing!!! You have to go…. My boyfriend brought me for the very first time, and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. From beginning to end it was fantastic. Mike was our tour guide, he was very knowledgeable, friendly and made the tour fun. I enjoyed learning about the history, and seeing how far things have come since they started. All the volunteers were friendly, polite and welcoming. I won’t say too much about the tour other than you need to go and have the experience . It’s fascinating! Thank you Mike for a fantastic experience!!!!

We were greeted by a lovely man that turned out to be Tony our tour guide. Walked into the cabin to be greeted by other members of the team. Staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Drinks are available for a small donation and there’s a very clean (cleanest ever) portaloo! We were given a hard hat and hi vis. While walking to the starting point Tony was very knowledgeable telling us all about the history of the road.
We entered the tunnels and the history was fascinating. Tony was thorough and patient (even with odd questions coming from my son!)
Absolutely fascinating and it was all for free. The whole place is run by volunteers. They rely solely from donations. We visited Liverpool for the weekend and we definitely saved the best until last. This was the best attraction of the weekend. If you love history then this is a must, make sure to book in an advance. I emailed to book and got a prompt reply from Mike. Was sorted within no time.
Would recommend this place to anyone who is able to walk freely and completely mobile.

I went with my grandparents (82 and 77), and I am disabled myself. We had no issues with accessibility (though it may still be difficult for some people - best to email in advance to discuss accessibility). My grandparents didn't feel confident going all the way down to the fourth and final level, but there was no pressure for them to go that far, so they just waited on the third level for the rest of the group.

The site is only a mile from the middle of Liverpool City Centre, and a couple of minutes walk from the University of Liverpool.

Tours are free, but you can leave a donation at the end.

It's best to book as far in advance as is possible, especially during summer peak season.

A very interesting alternative thing to do This is an entirely volunteer-led free tour that takes you down below the streets of Liverpool to a network of underground caverns. I don't want to spoil any more of the story, as the guide will tell you about the history but the volunteers have a lot of passion and dedication and it shows!

This is not some polished visitor attraction, but rather a living, breathing ongoing archaeology project run by enthusiastic and very knowledgeable volunteers. An engineering marvel I’m not sure any written review will ever do justice to the experience of actually setting foot in the Williamson tunnels. From the enormity of the vast tunnels to the enthusiastic and infectious commentary of the knowledgeable guide Mandy. It was all unmissable. My wife and I both live in Liverpool, and now we are retired we have more time to visit our city and a visit to Williamson tunnels was always on our list. We are so glad we have done it now. My only disappointment is that such a wonderful treasure in our city is not funded by the council or some sort of trust. It is all down to donations. Superb historical excavations What a brilliant experience guided by the very knowledgeable Tom. What he doesn't know about the tunnels and the history isn't worth knowing. We only experienced the Paddington excavation which is probably less than one tenth of the whole system. Will definitely be booking on the main tour. The amount of discarded artifacts from the Victorian era onwards was fascinating. Well done to all involved. We even discovered that my wife is related to William Boote, the grocer who occupied several of the Williamson buildings!

Excellent history tour at the Williamson tunnels!! Such history and pure enthusiasm from all the volunteers that run the Williamson tunnels! Excellent communication with booking! Clare was our tour guide and was a pleasure, had so much knowledge and love for the history. Would recommend all who visit Liverpool and want to know the interesting history.

Williamson was a fascinating character and I look forward to returning and touring more of the tunnels.

What a gem! Tucked away in Edge Hill, Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels brings Joseph Williamson’s eccentric 19th-century underground world vividly to life. A passionate team of volunteers has painstakingly excavated and restored vaults, passageways and vast chambers, and they tell the story brilliantly. Our guide, Chris, took his time, answered every question, and made the labyrinth feel both mysterious and human. We spent about 2–2.5 hours below ground and didn’t feel bored for a second.

A few extras that make it special: these tunnels were dug in the early 1800s and their purpose is still debated—employment for the poor, quarry backfill, or sheer eccentricity—but the result is spectacular, including the so-called “Banqueting Hall”, a dramatic vaulted space deep beneath Mason Street. FoWT has been uncovering and preserving this network since the 1990s, entirely volunteer-led, which makes the quality of the tour even more impressive. Entry is free; donations are welcomed and very well used when you see what’s been achieved. Tip: book ahead for their Wednesday/Sunday tours, wear sturdy shoes, and don’t forget to put your pin on the visitors’ map near the free coffee and hot cocoa.

Absolutely recommended—something wonderfully different from the usual city highlights, and a testament to Liverpool’s quirky, industrious past.

An impressive archaeological and architectural site created by unskilled workers using basic tunnelling/quarrying tools - they had no access to modern machinery. Enter a world of smallish tunnels and cathedral sized caverns. Our guides, Tony and Tom, are enthusiastic and are eager to impart as much of their knowledge to you as possible and are ably assisted by Laura in reception. Remember to give as generous a donation as possible to help them to continue with their work of excavating more areas of the site.

A hidden gem among Liverpool's many treasures. We had a great experience and our guide Tom gave us a really insightful tour. The dedication of the volunteers to keeping this part of Liverpool's history alive is amazing and I wish them all the best in their future endeavours. Definitely a highlight of our trip!

Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? To be honest I expected more to be excavated than is actually the case because of the rave reviews, though the amount of Earth removed is no less impressive & the lack of progress isn’t the fault of the FoWT. Visited the house site on a Heritage Open day. The main underground chamber on this site is impressive, the walk through ‘The Gash’ leading to the ‘Banqueting Hall’. Why only four stars? To be honest I expected more to be excavated than is actually the case because of the rave reviews, though the amount of Earth removed is no less impressive & the lack of progress isn’t the fault of the FoWT. Red tape is holding them up apparently. Best to see this as a work in progress. When more is excavated, no doubt the tunnels will become even more impressive.

My mum, step-day and my partner all attended the tour yesterday (Sunday) at 2pm.

Our guide for the 1.5hour tour was Colin. Colin was a great guide - engaging, knowledgable and down to earth!

The experience itself is not one to be missed and we would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Liverpool, its history and those that lived here long ago.

Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. I thought it might feel a bit claustophobic but the chambers are very large so I didn't get that feeling at all. We all looked great in our hard hats and high-vis jackets too!

Having dodgy knees I was a little concerned about the number of steps but it was all fine - you can take your time, you don't do them all at once and there are handrails everywhere. what a treat! i went in with 0 expectations and was blown away by every part of this tour. the knowledge of our tour guide, Mandy, was unmatched, she was so friendly and funny and informative i had no questions at the end of the tour. this really was a delightful tour of a massively understated part of liverpools history and the work the friends of williamsons tunnels have done has saved a very important part of history from being lost to time. thank you for a wonderful tour Mandy.

what a treat! i went in with 0 expectations and was blown away by every part of this tour. the knowledge of our tour guide, Mandy, was unmatched, she was so friendly and funny and informative i had no questions at the end of the tour. this really was a delightful tour of a massively understated part of liverpools history and the work the friends of williamsons tunnels have done has saved a very important part of history from being lost to time. thank you for a wonderful tour Mandy.

Fascinating to see these tunnels and all the artefacts found when clearing them out. Also fascinating to hear about the very eccentric Joseph Williamson.
Our guide, Clare, was a passionate volunteer who has been involved in exploring and clearing out these tunnels for many many years.
FoWT do not have a slick visitor centre - just a portakabin (and a portaloo) - but the volunteers are clearly very knowledgeable, experienced and passionate enough to give their time for free tours.
A quirky, unique experience - definitely worth the visit.

I enjoyed an absolutely amazing time with my fellow walkers of the St Helens Group RA when we went on an guided tour of 'Williamson Tunnels' by the 'Friends Of Williamson Tunnels' on Sunday. It was very interesting, and I will definitely go again to see how much more the volunteers have uncovered as they continue with the exploration digging they're doing, and definitely recommend anyone to go and visit and witness the remarkable sites of both the Tunnels, and remains of the former Mansion House of Williamson themselves. :)
