Our guest speaker this year is Paul O’Donnell, of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway Trust. Paul will tell us about the ‘Opening day of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway’.

September the 15th 2025 will mark the 195th anniversary of the Liverpool and Manchester Railways, an event that ushered in the railway age. The progenitor of all that we see worldwide today. Opening day was a massive event attended by everyone from the Hero of Waterloo to foreign dignitaries. The day was to be a spectacular celebration of this engineering masterpiece, so why did it turn into a catastrophic failure? Join us as we explore the events of a day marred by death and public unrest. We will look at the major players, events and even little-known side stories that add colour to the day.

How to find the Adelphi Hotel and Derby Room

The Derby Room, is via the 2nd of two entrances on Brownlow Hill (just past the two bus stops). Once inside, the Derby Room is on the left and is clearly signed. Access is also available from the front main entrance, however this is a longer and less direct route.
