Our next FoWT monthly meeting will take place on Monday 4th March 2024 – 7.00 pm (19.00 hrs) via Zoom.

“The Last Drop – Abolition of Public Execution” by April Lewis.

Our guest speaker on the night will be April Lewis, who will talk about “The Last Drop – Abolition of Public Execution.”

April, Born in Carshalton in Surrey I became interested in history from a very young age from school but mostly from the series of books Horrible Histories. I studied law at Hertfordshire and then started my career in the Civil Service. Whilst working I decided to do my Master’s and decided to combine my love of history and law by studying Legal History at Reading. To say I am passionate in history is an understatement and I just love sharing my love with other people through my talks and YouTube channel.

History of execution- For hundreds of years execution has been the corner stone of society, it brought the community together as well as a way for the authorities to control the community. But did it deter or encourage?

Why were they a public spectacle? Simply it was entertainment for the masses, it was something for you to take your family to. There were often stalls that sold food, drink and the occasional souvenir. But it was also a complex way for the authorities to keep order other the masses.

How and why that came to an end? There are many reasons why this came to an end and this talk will explain some of the reasons.
